I’m convinced that all really good content creators work in IT… and if not, they’re just highly technical. I have family members that are in graphic design, web development and content creation. The time, skill and eye it takes to get the nuances right… That’s the stuff that makes the difference. I’m an infrastructure nerd but I have mad respect for the devs/creatives. Great stuff dudes!

Great video! Btw; for most people: Detaching can be skipped if you mow (more) regularly. Detaching makes the room for weeds (hence the weed killer he uses) but you could save a lot of time and money on fertilizing and weed-control by simply leaving the clippings to fertilize the soil. Also, if possible, overseed before rain (not storm ofc). Test your soil before fertilizing for nutrients and pH so you don't overapply peat moss (which makes soil acidic) or (overapply) minerals which can cause deficiency in other minerals even if you have plenty in your soil. N -P - K numbers: - grams per square meter. Nitrogen for growth and colour (summer, winter), Phosphorus for roots - phosphoroots :D (spring, overseeding), Potassium (K) for drought & cold resistance (summer, fall). So spring: 10-25-15, summer - 20-5-20, fall - 20-5-20. (or similar numbers, you can have 2 fertilizers to save storage space).

I still think for most, the benefits of a dethatch( power raking) especially if they have never done it, are going to outweigh the risk of more room for weeds. Power raking is fairly hard on grass, but it is fairly damaging to weeds as well. Keep in mind most weeds will be on the decline heading into winter while cool season grass is on the way up. So while some winter weeds may come up, most weeds are not going to be as vigorous as they were in the summer. One of the key things when thinking about any renovation or overseed is making sure you have the weeds in your lawn under control first. To me an overseed is pointless if your lawn is full of weeds and you haven't gotten control yet. Using the mesotrione how he is here is preventing or stunting new weeds enough that the grass can take it over and crowd it out. If you are trying to crowd out weeds when seeding, you aren't really giving your grass seed the best chance to grow

Great video, George! I overseeded the last 2 years. Thought it was super effective to use a blower after dethatching instead of raking. Sharply angling it down towards the ground really exposed a lot of soil. Also, watering lightly before rolling seemed to help make the rolling more effective.

I started using Tenacity because of this channel. My experience with it is good, but I have to use 2 or 3 times per gallon more than the spec sheet says. I guess I have REALLY resistant or healthy weeds. If I go by the spec sheet, they will turn white in about two weeks, but then they all recover, even with another application at 3 weeks. If I increase the mix ratio as stated above, the weeds get super bleached. Then if I do another application, with the per spec mix ratio, in the 3rd week after application, I get the best results. I know that you can risk damaging your lawn by increasing the ratio as I have, but my lawn does not seem to notice. Yes, I did calibrate my sprayer for my nozzle and all that. I did it twice and had a landscaper buddy of mine check it for me.

I overseeded twice with oscillating sprinkler. I have 3 of the same exact one you show on the video attached with auto timers watering 3 times a day. I found that for my lawn are the best sprinkler for the job. Got excellent results from using this oscillating sprinkler vs others. Why, because they immitate a light rain which is the most natural water source. Also the water comes straight down instead of sideways which keeps the seed in place. But thank for the video. Every other tip is on point

Just did all this last weekend. Used an elite rye grass for my overseeding. Also used a mix of the oscillating fan sprinkler and one of the multi setting sprinklers you suggested. Both were at my disposal, but I also have been doing some hand watering. Preferably I would like to not use the fan you said not to use, but it covers the largest surface area for me in the shortest amount of time. Just works with the schedule. Also, its doing it on a patchy area that already had a decent amount of grass. I put a nice layer of peat moss on the bare areas to prevent runoff as best as possible. Hoping for some good results by this weekend. Another heat wave incoming, hope this sprouts before it hits!!! Thanks for all the tips Princess Cut!

Thanks for making your videos. I know there's a ton of work to make each one ("easy is hard" as an Apple developer once said). I have the exact Melnor oscillating sprinkler you show near the end (in fact, I have three of them). They're absolutely perfect for me because the Melnor allows me to adjust the width and length of the area I need watered, so there is almost no wasted water. The oscillating sprinkler has extremely even coverage, meaning an even amount of water within the area I set for the sprinkler. Your mister sprinklers are excellent for even coverage, but there is more evaporation with them, and it is more difficult to cover just the area you with the new seed. I don't have runoff I run the sprinkler for just two or three minutes to keep my new lawn seed moist. Therefore, I have no water runoff or waste issues.

Great channel. Love your work. If you don’t let it go dormant over the winter then it won’t be slow to wake up. I’m in Denver so we get a hard winter like you. I’m not sure what I’m doing exactly to prevent that. I’m probably the last person to blow out my sprinkler. I’ll even fire it up a few times in the winter and bow it out again to make sure it gets water. I set up the sprinkler so I can blow it out from my basement with ease. I figure it’s cold season grass. That means it grows even if it’s cold. Unless y I mow in the leaves a huge oak tree that covers my yard in the fall. I hit it with rich lawn fert? which is a dried poultry poop plus nitrogen. I hit it with more N in late February. It’s cold season grass. It might slow down but it doesn’t just stop growing come first frost. Take advantage of that.

Recently purchased from a slob of a former owner, who allowed 50% of the front lawn the become infested with weeds. And the backyard, infiltrated by those clover and white wild flowers. I got enough DIY to do indoors, so im gonna just do my best to rip out those weeds, throw down seeds and fert, and hope for the best. In the fall, maybe il hire someone to treat it properly for next fall.

Just got my mesotrione and the instructions says “ do not spray on newly germinated turfgrass. Delay treatment until grass has been mowed 2 to 4 times and/or four weeks after emergence, whichever is longer.” So I’m kind of at a point where I’ve got my pre-germinated fescue and I’m ready to cast it with my morganite, and follow up with the Mesotrion but now I’m hesitant because of the package instructions. George, I don’t expect you to catch this today but if you did that would be rad. I think regardless I’m going to go with your suggestion and just roll to me so try on after getting the seed down. I'm in the Chicago area too, and I'm glad to see that somebody else over seated last week as well. I did try pre germinating my seeds for the first time and I started seeing grass pop up after two to three days. I did try peat moss down for the first time, but I think it may be thick in a few areas. Should I try rake in those out or just wait?

I used a similar process, the only difference is I fertilized and put down the pre-emergent before the protective top layer. I'm sure it doesn't make a huge difference either way. Now just trying to keep the seed wet here in my area.

Hi. So I followed every step and now I have grass growing. What's the next step? Once winter is done here in Southwest Missouri what should be my next treatment? I also want to level my lawn where I had a pool and the Internet company did some digging.

@PrincessCutLawnCare me and my bright ideas lol I had a really nice lawn but was perrenial rye red fescue and small percent of kbg and I could not achieve the deep green I wanted so I got the kbg blue heat from gci turf hopefully that will do the trick !! Ur videos are so explanatory and easy to follow keep up the content 👌 u think I should ruff up just about an inch of soil and get as many of the dead roots up as I can ? I just didn't wanna waste too much time I want to get the seed in ground asap bc I know they say kbg can take a while to germinate thanks

Question: How long after you overseed an existing lawn would you apply starter fertilizer ? Some say after 2-4 weeks of germination but some do it immediately. When you do it immediately is there a risk of burning the grass ? Thanks in advance !

Fantastic video. For seed covering, I like your choice but I’m still partial to mushroom manure or fresh compost…I find it to be like steroids for starting grass. It’s not uncommon to start seeing sprouts in 7 days or so if you have decent weather . Keep up the great work my friend!

Awesome video. Right of time for me! I’m in west Michigan and I’m in the process of renovating my lawn. I planned on seeding this upcoming weekend before Labor Day but we are supposed to also experience record highs next week in the 90s and possibly 100s. Should I seed as planned or should I hold off until the heat wave passes? I know that I need to give the grass enough time to establish before frost and feel like I’m already running out of time. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Great video! Planning overseed soon but we also are getting mid 90’s degree heat in MD! So will hold off some more. What would you say is the highest temperature that you would seed tall fescue at? It’s supposed to be 90° all next week, lows of 68 degrees

Can you do a video on first cut of the season on overseed? Mine grew beautifully but I turned the sprinklers off for 2 days to prep for first cut when it was about 6” and 3 weeks old. I set the deck pretty high to only trim off a couple inches. It was still too wet and clogged the mower catch shoot and was a mess. I stopped and I’m going to let it dry out more and try in a couple days. Maybe I should mulch instead of bagging?

Hey George! New subscriber! Wife and I got a new house two years ago and with a baby, the lawn didn’t get the attention it needed and the weeds just took over. The heat wave in New Hampshire did a number, too. Trying to DIY recover the lawn and what I’m struggling with is what can I do in the fall and what can I push off to spring. If I plan to go through the whole kill weeds, dethatch, aerate, mow low, overseed (probably got the order wrong) what can I “prep” in the fall and what can I push to spring? Thank you!
