Great job, David. My three personal rules: typically in my church I will sometimes - ONLY sometimes, don't make it a "thing," ask the Spirit to lead you - play under the prayer following the sermon, leading into the closing song. All of these rules are aimed at NOT distracting from the spoken word. #1 play out of tempo (rubato or molto rubato), it can begin to feel too driving to the congregation if you're pushing a tempo #2 do NOT play a familiar (or any) melody; it makes the congregation sing the song in their heads; distracting #3 do not play in the key of the closing song but be prepared as you sense the closing of the prayer to move to that key so you can easily move to the closing song seamlessly. Particularly, underscore in a key lower than the closing song, so that you can modulate up to the closing song giving a little energy or breath as you ask them to participate again.

Being trained at an Assemblies of God Church, I learned this style of non intrusive playing. I later found out that this is known as talk music when I began playing for a Gospel based Baptist church. During times of prayer I would add more pad. If Pastor is talking I use little to no pad. No overused themes, no melodies to any recognizable songs and no harsh patches. I wish I could say that it’s a science. It isn’t. Listening and awareness is key.

TOTALLY guilty of hinting too much to the song we’re moving into by hitting the riff, or the chord progression in the song. This video has me rethinking my entire approach to underscoring. Great advice!

I like to try and add subtle hints. Typically I’m never at the songs tempo so it’s almost unrecognizable. Sometimes change up the rhythm of the line. But also never do it more than once or twice in a row. If it’s a moment where we just finished a song and pastor is speaking I’ll keep the progression going until he switches what he is doing. Example; comes up and talks I keep playing progression, starts praying - change progression, offering - progression change again. But also will change progression in between those moments if they linger for awhile.

This helped me understand a lot of what I could hear but could not play. Visual plus hearing. Thanks for going very slowly. Some people teach a song by showing how well and fast they can play but for a beginner I need super slow then progress. You did a great job explaining. Thanks again.

3:35 excellent choice of chords with backing pad, the idea is not to get too busy, allow the speaker to be limelighted, execute those notes smartly with a lot of space and breath, this is where people are contemplating and thinking, soul searching.

As an electric guitarist, I do this kind of thing with the keyboardist weekly. I use volume swells for the pad sound and he plays a clean piano sound over it. It works really well. We usually play I IV of the last key we played in. Occasionally I mix in a vi ii, because they're relative minors to I IV so I don't have to worry about clashing with my counterpart. In my mind they're variations of the same progression.

Great info. Two important things to add -- 1. The sound engineer needs to understand that the dynamic range of a piano or keyboard os much smaller than a guitar or singer -- thus needs to "ride the fader" more. 2. The sound engineer's first priority is to pay attention and get the mix right -- making sure the speaker isn't overpowered by the background instrument. I've seen too many "set-it-and-forget-it" young sound engineers currently being raised up. They don't understand that the sound mixer is the most important part of the worship team.

Musicians spent years perfecting their craft only to be ruined by the mixer. Unbelievable how much damage is caused by poor mixing. Arrest them!

Great Video. However, In my opinion when the pastor is speaking ( especially if it's the semon) it is better to keep piano ( or any other sounds that have a fast attack) out and use more pads and strings to enhance the mood (just like In the movies). This is because using a piano sound (which has a fast attack) makes it seem as if the keys are talking alongside the Speaker thus tending to distract the listeners. Instruments are accomplimemts. What people want to hear is the words, the instruments come to enhance the words. As an keyboardist are you enhancing the words being spoken/sang 😊

Great advice on training up the muscle memory so you have the capacity while playing to listen to the speaker so you can follow their energy accordingly. Sometimes l like to take the melody of a song we just played and do some variations on that to kind of echo what just happened, especially if the pastor or worship leader is sharing from a moment that just happened during a song we played. I think a key for me (no pun intended) is definitely making sure the piano isn't taking away from what is being said but is complimenting it. I've definitely been guilty of overplaying before and a lot of times I do find in those situations, that less is more.

Hi Mary, it might help to "practice" this while you are not at church, start slow and just try a simple chord progression going between the 1 to 4 chord until that feels comfortable, then try adding more chords or simple melodic phrases. It does takes time :)

It's so sad, if we need emotionalism to convict us of a message. Then we have to ask ourselves, are we being convicted or emotionally moved? Then we wonder why when trouble comes, we are easily moved to doubt; we have no strong foundation. I have been a pentecostal/charismatic piano player my whole life, and I know how we move people to emotionalism. I have been convicted by God's word. Worship comes from the content of the heart and mind, and only way to take part of it is when we believed, we were regenerated by the Holy Spirit. There is nothing else to be added, nothing else to be desired, other than to grow by His Holy Spirit, and word. If we need a pad in order to feel God's presence, are we truly feeling His "presence"? Are we elevating an experience, over real worship, which means to yield to God? I hope my message makes you ponder, and think about the state of the church today. If we take all this away, all the technology all the pads, God forbid, because we are no longer allowed to congregate, how many people will be left in our churches? Anyways, I hope ya'll understand where I'm coming from.

Amen. Our church is a small and a start up church. A lot of us experienced other "big" and elaborate church with piano and drum sets. But here we learned that as simple as an acoustic guitar plus experiences with Jesus will move you into a heartfelt worship!

@@irisalcantara8523 love that Iris! I’ve been a musician my whole life. And it was very difficult for me to let go of all my musical fleshly desires. I still jam out on my own. And with friends. But church should be reverent.

If it’s just an actual sermon, I would recommend just playing piano first. Start off playing a few note every 5 second then build up along with the sermon and then bringing in pad later. If you play pad the entire time the sound is rlly annoying.
