Basic Pond setup explained! The Pond, The Filter , The Pump.
This is the best filter that I have used so far. I will make another video showing the others that I used and compare to this one! And how much more I like this.
Aqua Ultraviolet Ultima II 20,000 Bead Filter (This is the exact filter I have, highly recommended)

Depend on your pond size, here are different ranges of size for the same filter:
Aqua Ultraviolet Ultima II 1000 Filter (up to 1000 gallon)

Aqua Ultraviolet Ultima II 2000 Filter (up to 2000 gallon)
amzn.to/3xmVH6q
Aqua Ultraviolet Ultima II 4000 Filter (up to 4000 gallon)

Great video, but a word of warning to all of you would-be Ultima II filter users: The Ultima II 30K filter is a wonderful component to add to any pond. HOWEVER... be mindful about how you backwash it. Specifically, be sure whatever pump you're using to backwash this filter is strong enough to do the job. In your video, you said you're using a 1hp pump to run and backwash the pond. I have been using this same 30K filter in my 5,000 gallon pond for more than 15 years, so I have a lot of experience with the pros/cons of this filter. In my experience, you need NO LESS than 3hp to backwash this 30K model filter properly. Luckily, you don't need to run the pump at 3hp to filter your pond (your 1hp will work just fine) but over time, if you backwash only at 1hp, you're sinking bed, tubular media inside the filter will inevitably clog with debris and muck and no amount of backwashing will clear the media when this finally happens. Eventually, your media will become so contaminated, you will get uncontrollable algae blooms, and ulcers on your koi (yes... I am speaking from experience.) As such, there are a few things you can do to insure success using this filter. First - at the end of the season and at least once a year, you must open the filter and check the sinking bed media for any clogging and contamination. And it's not enough to simply remove the multi-port head on the filter and look at the media from the top. You have to dig deep into the middle of the filter bed and check there. I would suggest you use a shop vac to remove the media and place it in a garbage bag lined trashcan so you can truly inspect all of the media and really check it for cleanliness. I can guarantee that after just a couple of years of use, if you backwash this filter below 3hp, you will find the media completely contaminated and you will have to go through the process of handwashing the media to unclog it (not fun.) Second - and as I said before, do backwash this filter at 3hp. Yes, you can filter your pond at 1hp, but backwashing this filter takes a lot of power to REALLY blow that media around inside enough to insure a thorough cleaning. This means you will need a variable speed pump that allows you to run the Ultima II in filter mode at 1hp and backwash at 3hp. It doesn't cost anything more to run the filter this way, because you're only using the higher power during your backwash for a few minutes every week. It is true, however, a 3-phase pump will cost you more on the day of purchase than will a single-phase pump, but the running costs between a 1hp pump and a 3hp pump turned down to 1hp in filter mode is the same. It's the 3-phase windings in this motor that allow it's speed to be varied. The third option is to install a blower on the filter. The Ultima II does not come with a blower, because the manufacturer insists it is not necessary. WRONG!!! Without a 3hp pump to backwash, your media will clog if you don't use a blower. I have spoken to the manufacturer about the lack of a blower on their product and I understand why they insist it doesn't need one. The other filters made by their competitors (like the Aquadyne bead filters) all have blowers. The Ultima manufacturers like to tell you their design is better because, "You don't need a blower," but given the type of sinking bed media the Ultima filter uses, not having a blower in my eyes is a huge disadvantage. While it is true that one cubic foot of the Ultima sinking bed filter media has twice the surface area as the same one cubic foot of floating beads, that advantage goes away if the media clogs with contamination. The reason there's twice the surface area in the Ultima II as the bead filters is because of the tubular shape of the sinking media. That macaroni-style media is hollow and, thus, creates twice the surface area because of it. Twice the area means twice the bacteria. Twice the bacteria gives you the ability to remove twice the amount of ammonia and nitrites from your pond. However, the media being hollow is exactly why it's so much easier to clog than the bead style filters. Don't get me wrong, beads have their problems too in that they can clump together, which reduces their surface area even more, but that's why bead filters come with blowers. Using a blower in the rinse position, will break up the clumping beads allowing them to be thoroughly cleaned during the backwash. When talking about these problems with Ultima's engineers and especially when I suggest the addition of a blower, they insist, "If you backwash more often," you should not have any problems with their media clogging. Okay... but how much "more" is enough? At 1hp, my experience says you must backwash every day, which is a tremendous amount of water loss. These results will vary, of course, depending on your stocking and debris levels that enter into the pond. In summary, I would install a blower, or backwash at 3hp and then check your Ultima II media for any clogging every year at the end of the season. If you would like to see what this media looks like when clogged... reach out to me and I can send you pictures. It isn't pretty. Again... don't get me wrong: the Ultima II is a very good filter (that's why I still have mine after 15 years) but as it is with any filter component, you must know the pros/cons of each design and the limits of what they can produce in the way of results. The advantage of the Ultima II sinking bed media over a standard bead filter is the amount of surface area available for the good bacteria to grow . The disadvantage is the very real possibility of clogging. Pros and Cons... it's the same with anything. Thank you again for the great video.

Hi Dave, thank you so much! I have been keeping koi for 22 years but only started really learning all the important complexities in the last 4 years when I moved to a new house and had to build yet another pond. (I love my fish and I wouldn't leave them if I moved. I have always used an ultimate ll filter as was recommended to me. At my last house. And the new one as well. I am noticing what you mean about it. Never really clearing after the back wash. I had thought it was due to not enough mechanical filtration and so added a stainless steel box filter w/waterfall return and submergible pump. I am struggling with reduced water velocity right now and just took apart. My performance pro artisan 2 pump tonight to check for blockages in the impeller there was some sledge but no blockages (last year there were some little rocks and actually some media because sub who worked for the pondman SD took it apart and didn't put it back together correctly. (I figured this was happening because I was losing a half a cup to a cup of media every time I back washed the pond) when I convinced him to come over and open it back up we found that one of the "arms" had fallen off. I've never broken down my ultimate too, but now after confirming the impeller was not clogged, still searching for the cause of my reduced water output. My plan is to break down the Ultima ll tomorrow. I do clean the filter basket daily and backwash a couple of times a week just as you mentioned in an effort to improve performance. I have a 4800 gallon pond and 24 koi, (in other words, a maxed out fish load) Still not big enough for my tastes, haha. (If I move again, the next house will need to have at least a 10,000 gallon pond. Any additional insight or advice you may have is greatly appreciated! 9:15 you can provide is greatly appreciated

I would think 300-500 gallons per hour for a 100 gallon tank would be way too fast! The volume of the pond should pass through the filter about every 2 hours and would be ok up to once every hour but what you are suggesting is “5 Times An Hour”! If you want to turnover at that rate get a bigger tank! At 5 times an hour the fish will get no rest and have to swim constantly to avoid being carried by the current! Think about it!

Hi, I am learning how to set up a filtration system for a koi pond that I am current trying to build. I come across your videos and find them very informative and want to follow your set up. I was wondering if you can provide a little more advice. My pond is about 10000 gallon water. If I have a bottom drain that connects to a skimmer, then the water will flow to filters and UV light, then flow to a waterfall and return to the pond. What pump I should use for the skimmer to pull water in, then what should be used to get water to the filter system and what to use for water fall? Do they need to be in similar GPH rate? Or I could have a less powerful one for the skimmer and waterfall, just the one to get water to filters need to be a bit over the pond size? Sorry my questions might very dump, but I am very confused on how that work? Thanks so much for your help.

Great video! I have a mud bottom, natural, pond with about 100 goldfish and koi. It's BIG pond, maybe 80kgal. I have about 1/2 of it filled with vegetation, parrot feather, lily's, etc. Water quality is good by the numbers, but it is hard to see below 3-4". What type of filtration can I add for something this large?
@CharlotteKoiClub
@CharlotteKoiClub 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Tom, if you have a mud bottom it would naturally be harder since when fish moves they will stir it up. I would say you can try ultimate koi clay or other flocculant to help the situation. Or you can try some large rock for bottom( which usually makes liner pond harder to clean but since you are already mud bottom). In terms of added filter, you would need some mechanical filter like zakki sieve or any kind of prefilter. Drum filter would help a lot too. You can also use pressurized filter like ultimaII. But I think despite what kind of filter you add, a retrofit bottom drain will help too. It kind of depends how much changes you are looking for and what budget we are talking about
@ces69
@ces69 2 жыл бұрын
For an 80k natural pond any type of filter that would be effective would be huge and massively expensive as would the pump! The water in the pond would need to pass through the filter every 2-4 hours meaning you would need to run a 20k-40k gallon per hour pump! Huge and very expensive! I think the most cost effective solution for you would be to build some sort of “natural” filter, such as a small stream or water course adjacent to your pond containing rocks, gravel and plants and the bigger you can make it the better and pump water up to the top of it so it flows back to the pond! Possibly a small raised pond with a stream running back down to the main pond? Site the pump at the opposite end of the pond to where the water returns to create flow in the pond and to reduce cleaning raise the pump off the pond floor so that it is only about 2/3rds down the pond depth. (A “filter” pump capable of pumping solids up to 8-10mm would be best!) The pump would need to be of a reasonable size, probably with a capacity of at least 5-10k gallons per hour! If you could construct it in a way that it “dropped” the water back into the pond such as a waterfall it would have the added bonus of aerating the pond water as well! If you don’t want to go to such lengths, increase the planting in the pond and obtain a large air pump to aerate the water and try and obtain some sort of natural balance as occurs in lakes! Good luck!

Yes, the skimmer sits higher than the bottom drain. But the water is still pulled from bottom drain and skimmer because of the water pressure from the pump. If you see where I open the skimmer, you can see water “springing” out from the water inlet from the bottom drain. If that is not clear I should make another video focusing on that

What UV light did you use. Does it matter. Do I have to go 150 watts for 24k gallon water pond
@CharlotteKoiClub
@CharlotteKoiClub 2 жыл бұрын
I use a very economic brand called Jebao. I had their 75w stainless steel one. I would say I am satisfied with its result in preventing green water. For choosing your UV, short answer is Yes on going 150w or higher. Long answer, it depends on the flow rate you are pumping. Assuming you have one pump, you need to find a UV that matches your pump rate, otherwise if water flow too fast UV will not kill properly. Every brand and model is rated differently, so you will need to look at the label to check the flow rate. You may, possibly have two or three lower wats parallel connected. But you want to make sure the brand you chose can do that ;otherwise just go bigger to save energy and space. Also, you want to consider how much you really need. If your pond is in full sun, go big. If your pond is in shade and the pond is well-filtered, you might get away with a little lessor UV. Hope that helps!

The pump he is running is a Swimming pool type pump and not the most efficient in electrical terms! You can buy specialist pond filter pumps which will turnover the same volume of water, albeit with less pressure for a whole lot less electricity consumption! For example you can get an Oase Aquamax that will pump 3000 gallons per hour and is only rated at 135 watts! Much cheaper to run than a swimming pool pump! The Oase pumps can be expensive but there are Chinese clones available on eBay such as Jebao pumps that are very good and reliable but much cheaper! Good luck!

How is the filtration setup in your pond? Generally if your pond is filtered properly, a 10-20% water change weekly is about average to keep good conditions. Some people that is reaching for perfection goes with flow through where water constantly runs into the pond and out. If you are adding water to the pond daily, I am more worried if your filtration is working properly. If you can share more info I am happy to help.

@CharlotteKoiClub 3 жыл бұрын
Hi, thanks for asking. I think your ultimate goal of 10 is right considering growth for the next two, maybe three years. The two weeks duration when you have 50-80 small koi in your pond could have risks in two ways: 1. with high population density, disease or parasite can outbreak really quickly and hurt the entire population. 2. You didnt mention your filtration system. You will want to make sure your filtration can handle that many. Proper water change would help. If your filter cant handle that many, water can go bad very quickly and wipe all or most of them out. And if you are planning to keep only a few, I would recommend you contact your local koi club or dealers, they will be able to take care of it for you for free. And lastly,some koi would need two to three year to grow to their final look/pattern. 26 is a very good size population to grow and wait out. Hope that helps!

I'm switching my pool pond from an internal to external pump. You only blocked the water when doing your backwash and didn't set off your pump. That's okay?

Well thats not the “best” practice but to me that is convenient. What could break really is the pump

Hi my pond size it about 5500 gallon and which uv clarifier should I get? and where you buy the bottom drains?

Hi Bill, on Amazon you can get UV by Jebao which is what I used in my pond. There are other brands that are great too but Jebao is generally more economical and still worked for me. Bottom drain you can try either amazon or webb’s water garden. Hope that helps!
