From north of the border here, when temperatures drop I take a pair of hand warmer packs. Strictly for if I get stranded in the car and have a 20-30 minute walk to get somewhere warmer. I have things in the car that I could use if I have to stay in the car but I'll walk to get somewhere rather than just waiting if I have to.

Great 1st tier list, man! You hit the nail on the head, start off with the less expensive gear and figure out what you like. I would add keys to the list, or more importantly, a good way to carry them on your person. I minimized my keys, and I carry mine on a clip carabiner that I clip onto my belt loop. I agree with everything you mentioned, but I have added (due to my work needs) is a brass caliper. It’s small to fit in my front pocket comfortably, measures in standard/imperial and metric, and it measures lots of small things (less than 4 inches) very well.

Im ol'school and i believe most are just EDC enthusiasts now a days. I've been carrying EDC since i was a kid and in custom holsters and sheaths i make myself. I have Made several Leather holsters that always hold my Iphone and and a... 1.) Fixed blade or 2.) Buck 110 folder or 3.) SOG Multitool or 1.) Left Pocket /Tanto folder pocket knife, keys 2.) Sharpie Marker 3.) Right pocket / Case Russlock folder, Brass Zippo 4.) CRKT Minimalist boot knife kydex sheath 5.) Leather Cowboy long wallet w/ CC folding knife 6.) Airpods and a Bluetooth headset This is what i Every Day Carry without fail.

Good stuff. For the carabiner, the price difference between a Night-Eyez toy and a real take-your-body-weight climbing biner is very small, you can get a decent wire biner for $5-6. Might as well go for something that can take a load. My keyring is a nice locking carabiner. I have a necklace that has certain always-on-me items, like a whistle, tiny flashlight, and Samsung Bar thumbdrive (water/xray/shockproof and cheap). For the pad of paper the waterproof paper is getting pretty cheap, between the right in the rains and knockoffs. For the pens, while there are more alternatives to the fisher space pens, you can get a really wide variety of pens and use the fisher refill. Because if you're in Houston, it's going to be raining.... for a flashlight, I always go for something that takes AA or AAA batteries. I have rechargeables but keep an AA on me too, you can ALWAYS get AA batteries. For knives look for something with at least VG10 steel, for about $10 more (and sometimes less) you can get a knife that will actually stay sharp. I have nice assisted knives but dont carry them, a lot of people are uncomfortable if you whip out a blade like that. I buy most of my knives on ebay, find out whats worth it and just wait... I've been blown away by the SOG PowerPint, it's really outclassing the competition in that size of multitool. Gerber Armbar is a decent alternative, much slimmer but also a nice bitholder. Something I have at all times comes from a habit my father has had since I can remember and from my time spent working with him as a truck and heavy equipment mechanic. Ignition pliers. Sounds a bit silly at first, but I don't leave home without them. I have a residential and commercial contracting business now and use them pretty much every day. Years ago, I was a software engineer at a major defense contractor, and i even carried a pair then. They came in really handy once at about 3 in the morning when we were having trouble getting a module out of a rack. The extraction tabs had broken off the board, it refused to budge and was holding up tests. I used my pliers to get it out. I even changed the starter on my 67 Chevy pickup in a parking lot when I was in college. With what I carry every day, I can pretty much cut, grab, twist or burn anything that needs it.

Love your list! The only think I would add is a lighter. I like my Zippo, but a mini BIC lighter does the trick. Sometimes the ability to light a smoke for someone is enough to turn a difficult situation something manageable!

Pen I prefer Big Idea Design pocket pro, or if you don’t wanna spend that much $$$ a Fisher Space Pen is fantastic. Multi tool is definitely a must, and the flashlight. I honestly use my flashlight probably more than any other piece of gear. I just started carrying a hank, and switched my wallet to a Trayvax OG V2. I would say, 1 thing you missed in my own personal opinion would be a watch. Doesn’t have to be fancy, just something to tell time, preferably with a dial because it can double as a compass in an emergency. I have multiple tier watches from Apple, to G-Shock low ends and high ends, and the one I use the most is a Walmart Timex Expedition.

A nice hank is a must for me as someone who wears glasses. No clue how many times I use it to clean off my glasses when I get something on them. Just makes my life a little easier, and it's worth it to me. Definitely agree on everything else. Dedicated flashlight makes a world of difference too. I don't need anything huge, but it's always better than the one on my phone, especially in small/tight places.

Got everything you covered here. But, I carry 2 wallets. A smaller one with ID's, cash, bank card, other credit cards then the larger one with cash, every day credit card. It's the one I'd turn over in a robbery. The card cancels itself if odd activity happens. Each wallet has 36" of paracord, safety pins and paper clips. Safety pins are for clothing malfunctions, mainly. I carry 3 knives, a Gerber Vise, Swiss Army (small one with the tooth pick/tweezers), and a Spyderco Street Bowie. The little Gerber has a plain blade and serrated blade, and a really good pliers w/wire cutter. A pair of nail clippers and tube of chap stick top off that pocket. I have lots of bandanas and several shemaghs, that take the place of handkerchiefs. I'm with you on flashlights. I've started buying the pocket pen sized ones because they are the most handy. Best thing about a water bottle is I can count how many ounces I drink a day. I don't carry a pad of paper, but a folded piece of blank 8 1/2" x 11". Folded to pocket size and it gives me 16 little pages that I can toss at the end of the week, after easily transferring any info onto a desk pad. A good solid pen makes a nice little stabbing weapon. Since I nearly always also have a pistol IWB holster, I wear a belt and suspenders. Keeps all the weight from pulling my pants down.

I also EDC chapstick & a small (barely bigger than the chapstick) pill container (excedrin, ibuprofen, Benadryl). And a smart phone (which I guess goes without saying). I’m 50, so I also carry folding reading glasses (fit in a nice case about the size of a zippo).

I've noticed most EDC KZbinrs go for aesthetics, I almost fell into buying loads of stuff I don't need. I've kept it simple, groove life wallet, hank, pilot pen, small prybar with bottle opener, Bic lighter, a cahier notebook mostly with contact and emergency info in case my phone dies, sticky notes, microstream flashlight, carabiner, Victorinox SD, and lastly my pocket knife a baby banter, I've bought a bigger folder and didn't like how aggressive if felt, bought a medium one and felt it just still might be too much knife, the baby Bater was just right for all the small tasks and just enough to make someone think twice.

I've been thinking of adding some Ibuprofen (for the girlfriend), bandages and small first aid, Tide to go is something that interests me and I've been thinking of adding a power bank. I also carry a USB on my Keychain in addition to the stuff you carry. Planning on getting something that can organize everything and won't take too much space.

I do carry a powerbank it's a Anker 10000 it's slim the size of a phone fits nicely in slings and backpacks. Alpaka has good pouches that can organize your gear, there's the admin pouch, utility pouch or my favorite the elements tech case.

One that you missed is a watch. Again not essential for everyone. My favourite at the moment is a Wenger field watch with olive NATO strap. The specs are the same as Victorinox watches but it's more understated and less expensive. Looks a bit like a Hamilton field watch. It isn't multipurpose, it just does one job very well, telling you the time at a very quick glance. I'm from the UK so I can't say Batallion in a Marine context so: Commando!

I'm more likely to go out without my phone than without my EDC gear i.e. watch, knife, lighter, flashlight but then again I managed fine for more than half my life without a mobile phone.

That's an excellent list. Anything I might add would be a some-time item, like dental floss, extra hearing aid batteries, and an eyeglasses repair kit. Those things are just as easy to have near all the places you generally find yourself, but you might be inclined to utter a "Dammit!" if you need it and don't have it.

I have a small little leather carrying case that's about the size of a wallet that I use for the majority of my EDC. It can hold a Gerber Dime (not the best multitool but it works), an Olight I3T, a Case knife, a small skinny lighter, an astronaut pen, an allen wrench, and two flat 10mm wrenches and a $100 bill. It's also got a key ring on it. I pair it with a small Rite in the Rain notebook, my wallet, and my phone, and I've got a lot of versatility just in my pockets. The flashlight and the box cutter on the Dime probably get the most use, followed by the pen and paper, but everything gets used time to time. There's still a little bit of space under the Dime, but I'm not sure what I would use that for. Maybe if there was a pill case about double the width of a nickel I could throw an ibuprofen or two in there.

I would disagree about the hanky, definitely tier 1 in my opinion. And probably has a greater # and more varied uses than any other single item you listed. It takes up almost no space, weighs next to nothing and cost less than anything on your list. Just for fun, ask your audience to name all the uses of a handkerchief. You might be surprised, from lifesaving bandage to emergency toilet paper, it’s a item that often gets overlooked. Also I would add a belt onto your list.

I blow my nose on my hanks. Its also my most used piece of medical gear. I'm a carpenter by trade. I seem to donate blood at work at least once a week. It makes a good pressure bandage.(if still clean) I also keep a polyester blend "buff" in the same pocket as my hank. (100% Cotton)

Can someone explain to me the obsession among EDC enthusiasts to carry pens and paper? I'm 45. I live and work in an urban area. I'm a lifelong hiker and camper. I'm a dedicated prepper/survivalist/EDC enthusiast. I've literally never ever needed a pen or a notebook for any situation ever. What am I missing?

Me personally, I only carry a pen in my pocket. The notebooks stay on my desk and center console of my car for writing down thoughts or things to do so I don't forget. The notebooks aren't really EDC for me, but pretty much within reasonable reach I suppose.

You need to carry a lighter. I learned young you always carry something to cut with a lighter to tie with don't have something use a shoe string then cut the other in half and tie your shoes.Then a hanker chef carry two one small one so you can hand a clean one to the ladies then a big one you can use for your face make a sling a dozen different things. Carry on!
