I may not be in HEMA (though I really wish I was), but stuff like this really helps me put realism in combat into my stories and campaigns. That and I find medieval weapons and martial arts absolutely fascinating.

Same here, Dream. I'm not near any HEMA clubs in my country, so I can't really practice HEMA. But when I do text-based roleplay, I use a lot of this in fight sequences!

Thanks for the video. I know I'm late to this party, but I've wondered for the longest time how exactly "such a tiny shield" is used. Just found your channel and subscribed...and I wish there was a HEMA group near me. Thanks!

I'm very grateful you made this video. Sword and buckler is the most interesting to me and what I want to learn to do. I will have to give these a try since I am new to swords in general and have never done any fencing but I really want to learn sword and buckler.

Great video! I'm just about to start studying sword and buckler but many of the videos and the I.33 manual dive right into complex sequences instead of good fundamentals and general technique.

Granted i've never done HEMA before (unfortunately) but I'm quite a good left handed sabreur (if i don't say so myself 😉) as i've fenced since I was a child. I can imagine having access to a buckler offering quite a few advantages. For example, parrying with a buckler would allow you to Riposte from an unorthodox/unexpected line of attack. Plus considering how common simultaneous or near simultaneous touches are in fencing (and I'm guessing swordplay in general). Access to any type of armour that gives you the ability to "to"take/tank" a hit (for want of better words) could make all the difference in a real life situation...

Are the ridges on that sword there to help simulate the "sticking" of sharp swords when they cross?
@jaketheasianguy33074 жыл бұрын
Yes, those synthetic swords are called sharp simulator. You could find them on black fencer website

Might I ask what equipment is used in this video? It wasn't in the description this time. I know of the blackfencer sharp simulator arming sword, but I don't recognize the buckler.

Second that. Looking for a buckler that is lighter than the good ole indestructible 'Cold Steel' buckler.
@scottmacgregor34444 жыл бұрын
@@tomdutoit5591 Well you probably won't find one made of steel. The various steel bucklers I've handled have all been noticeably heavier, even at a slightly smaller size.
@tomdutoit55914 жыл бұрын
Scott MacGregor Thanks for the heads up. Looks like I will attempt making a wooden one. Knowing my luck it will end up heavier too :)

I like sword and buckler because I have an Albion Templar which is an arming sword and a buckler would complement it well. What is a good buckler you would recommend?
@stephenkime59464 жыл бұрын
one thing to consider is that a hard steel buckler can on occasion cause damage to the sword. if you have an albion sword might be a better investment to get a cold steel Synthetic buckler. They're cheap and durable and will not damage your expensive sharp arming sword.

What are the pros and cons in using a gladius and buckler being that it would be more thrusting and piercing?
@spanishinquisition76232 жыл бұрын
You’re gonna lose so much reach with a gladius, assuming by gladius of course you mean the ancient Roman gladius. Because of reach lost is gonna be one thing and then I think certain obsessios for I.33 are gonna be less effective because they generally benefit from having a great deal of blade to work with. As for thrust vs cut you should be able to find purchase with both even if you’re using a gladius. I’m not entirely sure what would be compelling you to use a gladius and buckler anyways? Is it a reenactment thing, or something else?
