That Arachne beta is outstanding; it's been my primary version since it came out. I print a lot of tiny functional parts with intricate features and this variable line width is doing a fantastic job at cleaning up the path. Works just as well as S3D in many cases. Very excited for the merge

As a guess, the odd infill pattern on the cylinder may be due to the old engine trying to solve the infill along either X or Y as much as possible (Sensible to only move one axis at a time as much as possible to prevent inaccuracies with material placement). It then looks like it's trying to approximate by "Squaring the circle" as much as it can instead of tracing the arc. If you look closely, one part of it has it doing parallel lines until it gets infeasible to continue due to the narrowness of the direction of travel (Possibly controlled by minimum infill length settings) then the less dominant axis takes over and it can more readily trace the curve until it reaches the other side and it goes back to it's funky ways. I see this as being a huge improvement: Time saved for more efficient tracing. Les vibration introduced on model because it's not doing so many direction changes - less chance for a tall model to work itself loose. More efficient use of material / less chance for blobbing from over extrusion. EDIT: Less retraction so less chance of extruder breakage of filament.

Nice preview for the upcoming Cura. I like that new line type mode, especially the seams. I use the support blocker feature a lot when I'm testing new functional models. I change the blocks to a cutting mesh and adjust the settings so I can turn off features I don't want to print. Saves hours of printing and meters of filament when you're trying to fine tune the size or shape of a particular feature in a model. Great content as always.

Good info, thanks. The new engine should help. Try creating a flat disc say 25mm in diameter with a 5mm hole in the center, one layer high. Slice it in Cura with concentric lines and look at it. Then slightly change the outer diameter, say to 27mm and slice again. Cura has a lot of trouble getting this right, you have to tweak the line width each time you change the outer diameter if you want a nicely printed flat disk with no overlaps, zig zag lines or missing lines.
@havenview3 жыл бұрын
The crushed inner walls issue is often caused by the mathematical discrepancies that processors have with floating point numbers. When you code with floating point you cannot properly use the "equals" operator, you use programming techniques to effectively ask "near enough equal to" The work around is often to drop the inner line width by a really small value, say to 0.39 or 0.38 instead of 0.4 This will make near zero difference to the amount of filament extruded for each section (and they are inner walls anyway) but it will spoof the slicer into thinking the final inner wall is "near enough equal to" the available space in the model

Super impressive machine and glad to see it getting a well deserved spot in Cura. Can't wait for the new cura 4.9 cus the 4.8 was packed full of bugs. This new engine looks really promising! Did they optimize the printing order to reduce travels ? I feel like I see some nonsense travels sometimes...
@Crazyates113 жыл бұрын
There are two options you can search for: “Optimize wall printing order” and “Infill travel optimization”
@LenordeFPV3 жыл бұрын
@@Crazyates11 Thank you! I already use both options. But when slicing a cylinder for example, it will start the skirt from one side, then it will travel to another side for the cylinder walls, and finally a third travel for a feature next to the cylinder. All of these travels could be greatly reduced if it starteed from the same point of the circle everytime. On more complex shapes, it is even more obvious to see the nozzle travel from one side to the opposite, then coming back almost next to the first point...
@JelleSpijker3 жыл бұрын
We worked on the algorithms for generating and placing walls with variable line widths. A side result is that these might now be open lines and not closed loops. That could mean that you will see a slight increase in the number of travels. But keep it mind that the total time a printer travels is nothing compared to the time it actually print. So optimizing these moves won't bring that much time reduction. While optimizing wall line placement will bring greater print time reductions.
@LenordeFPV3 жыл бұрын
@@JelleSpijker Thank you for this explanation! I just tried Arachne, and it is awesome for cylindrical parts. Even with these additional travels for open lines, the print time is reduced because the infill is much more efficient. I was pointing out the starting point of a closed loop that is sometimes far away from the last printing head position. The goal would not be to reduce the printing time but rather the impact of oozing/stringing. When it crosses the whole print, it can leave material at an undesired location. My example is very specific, and I'm still not an expert in 3D printing, so I don't know if this case is really an issue. Also, if I understand correctly, it is not possible to "see in the future" and look at the next feature to print before deciding where to start a loop.
@JelleSpijker3 жыл бұрын
Yes, absolutely correct there are more benefits then just a print time reduction. But unfortunately we have to prioritize what we work on and since there are already measures in place to reduce oozing, travel optimization is a bit lower on our backlog. Especially since these types of problems are hard to solve for all scenarios. But these are also the interesting math problems to solve, so no worries we developers will ofcourse try to optimize them anyway.

The thing with the block, that you change (in this case changing infill in a specific area), that's not new. It's more than a year old

I never said it was new. I said a lot people asked where it was in v4.8 so I showed them in 4.9 since it’s the same. Watch again. I also included a pop up link to my original details on the feature in my video from 2 yes ago: kzbin.info/www/bejne/Z5-ln4mqhKp0n7s

The naming scheme for Cura and libraries is moslty Greek/Roman mythology. Arachne is named after the myth, where a 'boastful' woman got turned into a spider by the godess of weaving (think it might be Athena) for daring to win(?) in a competition against her.
