@for the love of God And if that can not be arranged today, spend the night at that connecting city and take the next train tomorrow. There is nothing wrong with a connecting city overnight layover, nor is there nothing wrong with a layover anywhere. You might even see your fare decrease with a layover, splitting the journey up. Not always though, but it is worth checking out before you commit. Most of these rural towns have nice bed and breakfasts near their stations...

I’m catching 2 trains and my friend is complaining about the 3 hour layover… but isn’t it true we can be later than 3 hours? If I have protection on my ticket can I cancel my 2nd train and get my money back to fly instead?

@@ronclark9724 i would not to pay for lodging twice. If the Amtrak schedule at a stop involves a train switch, and the train you are on does not make it there On time, i would hope accommodations are made. And as someone stated, if the next connecting train is a 10 hour wait, what do you do in the mean time?

We bought our Zephyr roommettes tickets on Christmas for our June 2022 trip. 1 week later the price for the two tickets dropped by almost $700. I called Amtrak and they issued us a refund for the difference. We had to move from rooms 2 and 3 to 7 and 8. But they were great in working with us to get the cheaper fee.

I have only ridden on a train once, when I was in my late 20's. From New York to Virginia. ( I'm now almost 60) I absolutely loved it. I have thought about it here and there over the years, but never seriously, until one of yoir video's popped up on my feed, and I've been watching your video's ever since, day dreaming about a train vacation. But I have to tell you, when you mentioned on one that a roomette is $500 a night, it really burst my bubble. lol. I still love your vildeo's. Very imformative, and you seem like a great couple.

Thank you for another great video. I prefer the train to flying. I've ridden Amtrak for over 40 years. In 2013 my husband and I went to a wedding in Utica, Ny. We did coach and it was way less expensive than the flying options. I got a roomet for the SW Chief at the same time for my trip in April of 2014 to start a summer long backpacking trip. Our home base is in Kansas City, Missouri. I have used the California Zephyr from Osceola, Iowa out and back to truckee and to Denver too. For a shot short trip with epic views I love the Surf liner from LA to San Diego. Back in the 1970s I road the train form Oklahoma City to Houston and back may times before it was discontinued. A few items I found make train travel really great, coach or sleeper car are, a water bottle, some snacks, ear plugs, eye mask, warm cap, a down or fleece blanket and a pillow. Always check the plugs for your chargers before you get off the train. I run the charger cords through the hydration port on my backpack so I don't forget mine. Thank you again for the video. Safe travels.

Great info!! One route which isn't as picturesque but popular is the AutoTrain that carries folks between the D.C. area (Lorton VA) & Orlando. I believe Amtrak sells tickets to passengers with autos or motorcycles with Autoracks at the rear of the train. It's an all Superliner II consist with slight changes in the interior design. Some or all sleeper cars have deluxe bedrooms only on the 1st level with no roomettes. This train carries passengers between these 2 points with stops for crew changes only. I think it's the only East Coast train that still prepares meals onboard unless things have changed due to Covid. It's the longest train consist of all Amtrak's routes. It's a popular route for those going to DisneyWorld.

❤️ Love your channel. Truly grounded and informative vs an infomercial. I’m growing increasingly interested in upgrading to sleeper accommodations and you’ve clarified MANY questions we had in this area. (Thank you). With meals included in pricing, what is a reasonable meal tip for each meal? Does one tip the room attendant each day, end of trip, or other? (I assume there could be several crew shifts over a long trip.) DISCOUNTS - If there’s an option to upgrade once boarded, what kind of discounts are available in that situation?
@GroundedLifeTravel
@GroundedLifeTravel 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks! Your room and meal attendants won't change at all the whole trip. It is a tough job. We usually tip $2-3 per person per meal and $5-10 per person per night to the cabin attendant. Meals we do after each meal and the other at the end of the trip.

I loved all the info you talked about. I've always wanted to take a long train trip to see mountains and rivers! I've only been on one train trip coming back from dropping my son off at college in Oklahoma. I came back to San Antonio TX by myself after I left him on a train. It was more affordable during that time. But I'm going to write down all your tips and plan a trip! God Bless!

My wife and I booked the auto train back in Jan for end of July. Round trip from florida to VA and return. We watch this video and we are few weeks away from our trip. We did get a room because of the bathroom in the room. We were curious after watching this we check the price and almost 3 times as much. Very good advice

Yes, especially this year, the prices have really gone up over the summer. It was great to book early!

As a beginner,I would listen to anything' she says, she is really nice to look at, her eyes are so warm, and she is quite curvy too, just saying, he is quite fortunate.

Thanks. This is great as I am planning a trip almost a year in advance and want time to research. I took Amtrak years ago but this time I am retired and can take all the time I want but want to plan well. Taking Empire Builder to Seattle from St. Louis. Headed to your website!!

We have only used Amtrak coach on day trips to MI from MO in the recent past. When the kids were young (a few decades ago) we took a SW Chief bedroom from KS to Chicago then coach to MI. Our only other experience with a roomette is when we rode on Canada's VIA train through the Canadian Rockies. We will be on the SW Chief to Chicago then the Lake Shore Limited later this year in a roomette to Rensselaer, NY then drive to Vermont. If you are ever on the River Runner (currently from KC to Chicago) say "hi" to the volunteers at the Jefferson City station as about 9 of us volunteer our time to serve the Jefferson City waiting area as no paid Amtrak personnel are there.

Thank you for this video! Hoping to plan an extended trip with my son who is on the spectrum and totally obsessed with trains. Noticed in your B-roll you were in CFL at some point which my son was super excited to see. Looking forward to watching more of your content and getting him on an Amtrak for the first time soon.

Thank you for all your great info. I travel alone. I started traveling AMTRAK to see all 48 contiguous states. I pick a museum, a major attraction and a food place-then COVID happened. I travel coach. How are you managing in the time of COVID? I want to ride The Sunset Limited from LAX Union to New Orleans on my 69th birthday on January 28.

Hello, we love your videos for AMTRAK, actually that is why we decided to to take the train for the second year. However just so you guys share this with all interested, we are sitting right now waiting to take the AutoTrain to Lorton Virginia. We paid a lot of $ to our disappointment upon checking in to our Bedroom the receptionist refused to give us the complementary dining, forcing us into the traditional dining claiming they just changed this today, like if we were going to buy into that! After telling her no way that’s not what we paid for and we demanded the complimentary meal be delivered to ur room. We have a very sick mom and we’re exposed to COVID a while ago so imagine the how we felt! Please put that out there as we are very but very disappointment with AMTRAK! Thank you guys for all your tips on traveling☺️👋

Very interesting, thanks for sharing. We always eat in our room for at least 1 meal a day. If they did in fact just change that we should start hearing more about it. I really doubt they would actually make that change. I don't see any reason they wouldn't want to bring meals to the room though, as it is quicker and less strain on the wait staff. Sorry this happened to you!

I happen to remember seeing this: “The USA Rail Pass is your ticket to tour the country. 10 rides (segments) over 30 days to your choice of over 500 destinations. At just $499, that’s less than $50 per segment.” ONLY COACH, however.

I've never taken amtrak but I want to take it from Sacramento to reno and back. What I've learned when I try to buy a ticket, is that you have to get a ticket well in advance at least for coach.
