Beginners Guide to HOI4 - Tutorial p17

It's War! Today's Video - Hearts of Iron 4 Tutorial - Germany will conquer Poland. We will make use of Army, Navy & Airforce, and draw up some battle plans. Dates covered: 21st July - 23rd Aug 1939.

For anyone joining us for the 1st time - Essential Controls to attack...
Step 1: Select the Army (the General's Portrait) and press Z - then Click somewhere along the German/Polish Border to create the front line.
Step 1b: Alternatively, Select the Army and press Z - then RIGHT Click / Drag along a PORTION of the front line, for example create a narrow area for panzer divisions to push through.
Step2: (Without deselecting anything) Press X and then right-click-drag to where on the map you want the General to order his divisions to attack towards.
Top Tip: If in doubt - push towards the enemy Capital, or other significant town/city.
By the end of this video, Poland will be ours. I deliberately play less than perfect, so I can point things out. Future battles will be fought slightly differently, but today gets us all down with the basics, building upon what we learnt in the Spanish Civil War.
We will also keep micro to a minimum, so that we can explore those more fully in future episodes.

Interesting that it took you about the same amount of time to capture Warsaw, as it did in the actual war, I.e. about 3 weeks.

Interesting, in my game France did not guarantee Poland, only Britain. Guess the chickened out! :)

Question: So if you can assign multiple roles to aircraft, doesn't this just show the value of tactical bombers? When there is no viable target of one type they will do the other?

Soviets took Lithuania already in my play thru. guess I just wait it out for now.

Keep going regardless... There's always a degree of randomness. So long as they don't start attacking you, before we're ready.

So as I said, I'm playing France as I'm waiting next tutos, and it forced me to play with a tight economy and pop, and that gave me an idea: to recruit and train only the most basic infantry template and only then I upgrade those to any more powerful template at my disposal once I have enough resources. My guess is that I achieve same result of having fully trained battle ready infantries for cheaper, even if they require again some field after the upgrade. I'll try that with tank too, recruit/training only small light ones, and then switch those to medium and adding other goodies to the template when I have enough of them. What do you think of that?

ah ah, had not enough time to try with tanks, lost the war by the end of 1940 on normal difficulty...well at least that's historically accurate lol

Great series, great video, as always. I’m no expert, but for this type of artillery I believe in WW2 the Germans primarily used 150mm, the Soviets 152mm, the US used 155mm, the UK used what they called 6” (which works out to 152.4mm, I think)* and the Italians used 149mm. Of course the Germans (and some other countries) also used captured equipment; I’m just referring to what they produced. Why there were the differences in caliber, I’m not sure-other than of course different countries probably had different levels of technical skill, resources, etc. *And I realize the UK also referred to a lot of their artillery by what I believe was supposed to be the notional weight of the shell, like 25-pounder, etc.

It's interesting how they figured these specific sizes/weights, to be most effective. I think every frontline ww2 memoir I've read, had made use of captured enemy equipment, and sometimes even enemy ammunition could be used in certain weapons as a last resort (I forget who used who's, it was something like mortars were a fraction smaller, but fired out the tube all the same, if slightly less accurately). I've just finished a book on Iraq 2004 (House to House by Sgt David Bellavia) and they were CONSTANTLY coming across weapons caches full of all kinds of weapons, from ww2, to Vietnam and the latest stuff, various nations produced. I read a Vietnam memoir (can't recall which, but I think it was a SOG) who had a working German ww2 mechanized truck! (I can't recall where they said they got it from now).
