Our last little project to finish of my beginners guide to carving series and i thought it would be nice to finish off with a basic spoon which is often a favourite with new carvers.
I have deliberately carved this without a spoon/curved/hook knife just to show that you don't need one when your starting out though it does give more versatility if you are making spoons from billets later on.
This little eating spoon is no frills and i have made a really simplified version but there is nothing to stop you spending some time and adding some embellishments to make it look a lot nicer.

Simple and beautifully narrowed. I destroyed 3 birch blanks yesterday being over zealous and aggressive. You have made a critical point for the newbie carvers like myself. Enjoy the “ peace” of carving. Patience is virtue when it comes to carving. Make sure you balance carving on each side and inspect your work often to maintain evenness. Thanks.

When you start carving, how dry do you want the wood? I have fresh cut poplar and birch and wondering how long I should dry out the blocks before carving. Thanks for posting this!
@quentingallea166

He has a nice video on that. Green/fresh wood is recommanded (risk of splitting when it dries, but dried wood works as well (harder to work and harder for your tools). I ve seen woodsman finest also put dried wood a week in water to make it easier to work with.

Hey I've tired to do this with eucalyptus wood and pine wood with a knife however the knife I have doesnt make a dent I think it's the knife and the wood. What type of wood and what knife do you use?

Rodger ronaldo try carving birch or sweet chestnut or Willow as for knife buy a Mora basic knife its cost around 10 quid but flexcut makes folding knives with gadgets like hook knife both tools I mentioned comes razor sharp ready to use but flexcut can be expensive but way worth it ❤🐾🐺👍

Nice! Which Mora model was that with the black handle that you used at the end?
@WoodcraftHamster

Wanderlust it’s the mora basic, essentially it’s a 106 with a moulder plastic handle and about half the price of the wooden handle version. I’ve been using it a while now and it’s actually a great, comfortable little carver.

Great info, but the part where you switch sides to make sure you keep in line with the bowl part of the spoon was exactly what I needed to hear. I've had issues keeping mine mirrored.
