Back in the 1970s, Jeff Newman came up with letter names for the levers, and many have adopted the standard. D lever lowers the Es. B&D are often used together. F lever raises the Es. A&F are often used together. E lever flattens D# string 2. X lever flattens the Bs.

It would be better to just refer to the lever by what it does rather than its location. My E changes are on the right. + left -right. It’s just less confusing especially to noobs

Hi Scott. Surely you can’t be computing all this in your head as you’re playing. Does it all become instinctive eventually?

I try and avoid thinking where possible Terry 😂 it does become instinctive, but there are certain moves where thought is required. It’s more a case of reacting to the vocal / rest of the band.

Thanks again for this series Scott. I’m really enjoying it. I sold instruments in Australia for many years and each year I was fortunate to attend the Fender dealer meetings in Sydney when they would put on a showcase concert and I was always blown away by Michel Rose playing the pedal steel. He made it look so easy but I knew it was anything but. Do you ever play gigs in York?
