Out of all the reaction channels, this is the first one where I see the comment section supporting the dub. I will be the odd one out and say the dub is OK but the original voices are PERFECT. You really hit the nail when you said Frieren was sassy, which she is not in the original voice.

@@kroanosm617 I would go as far as to say that the Frieren in English feels kind of like a different character, as it has some nuances in her voice that are very different than in Japanese, and you could say that since the dub is good, you kind of get two series in one, worth watching both versions in the end.

In the sub Frieten is super old but sounds and acts childish because she is fairly young by elf standards. The dub portrays her more like she's older, wiser, and full of sass. It's not bad, but it loses all of the nuisance of the characterr. Frieren has been around so long but her development as a person stagnats because she spends so much of her life isolated, until Himmels death forces her to reexamine her life and start to mature as a person
@g.r.linden7713Күн бұрын
I don't usually chime in on the sub vs dub debate but in this case, I think it changes the show a bit. As you pointed out the English V.A. is a bit sassy whereas the Japanese V.A. is more deadpan. With the deadpan delivery you get the sense that Frieren is on the spectrum, or at least has enough trouble with social cues and norms to set her apart from those around her. For me that fits more into the theme of the show than a Frieren who understands and is comfortable with sass, sarcasm, and banter. But that's just my opinion, this is a show I'm sure you'll rewatch on your own time at some point so you could watch the sub then and decide if it affects the story or not for yourselves.

Frieren is a beautiful show - in the art, the characters, the story. Love that you picked this up to watch. On sub v dub - Frieren (and Himmel to an extent) feels like different characters in both versions and I personally prefer the sub. It was what I imagined her to sound like and be as a character while reading the manga. The translation isn’t bad, the voice actors are also great for the dub but I feel like her voice in Japanese fits the tone of the show far better. Although, you guys go for what you prefer for yourselves and for this channel as reactors. You can watch episode 1 in sub in your own time and see which you would pref to continue with. Either way they’re both great versions.

Beyond the tone differences between the languages, when you watch the Subbed version first you realize how strange and wordy the English script translations are. When Heiter pats Frieren's head before the last adventure - Original Japanese: "Atama nadenna" (Casual way of saying 'Don't pat my head') Subbed Frieren: "Don't pat my head." Dubbed Frieren: "Thus, my head's still not for patting."

The first 4 episodes were originally aired as a single 2hr movie. As a result, some people find the start of the show to be too slow and take too long to get to the long term plot. I don't expect that to be the case for you two, but just getting out in front of the complaints if I'm wrong. Try to get to at least the end of episode 4 and then there's a slight shift As for Sub vs. Dub, I'm sure you'll get comments in favour of both. I originally watched the dub and enjoyed it. I think both are good and either will work for the reaction. If anything, I think the vast majority of reactors react to the sub, so potentially just for the sake of having a niche for the YT business side then the dub might be better. But ultimately just do whichever you'd prefer
@TXOT-k8nКүн бұрын
I haven’t seen a single reactor (out of dozens) use the dubbed version of Frieren yet, so I don’t know if that translates to you potentially getting more traffic from using the uncommon dub or less traffic because the dub is wildly unpopular and I just don’t know it. But I’m not a subtitle-only purist; if it’s a show that I really enjoy then I’m usually watching at least once for both sub AND dub. While the sub will have the benefit of the original voice direction the dub can sometimes have more accurate/appropriate translations since subtitles sometimes need to be paraphrased for screen time, so I get the most context out of watching both. Unless a show’s dub is pretty awful, but really dub quality has only improved over the years. IMO as dubs go this one’s pretty good, plus I imagine the overwhelming majority of your audience for this reaction series would have already seen the subtitled show anyway, if not both versions already. - I’d say react to the one you want since I’m here for YOUR take on the show and I’ve already seen both sub/dub multiple times.

Yes, the story is about what happens after the heroes' journey ends, following their victory over the Demon King. It explores life beyond the adventure, what lies ahead after the epic quest is complete. Hence the title, Beyond Journey's End. Frieren is the only anime in a long time that has gotten me excited each week, eagerly waiting for the next episode. Before this, I had been pretty much burned out on anime for many years because I had watched so many of them - probably over 1,000 (I've been watching anime continuously for almost 20 years). This burnout was especially due to most anime following the same repetitive tropes. Even now, with popular anime like My Hero Academia, Chainsaw Man, Jujutsu Kaisen, Solo Leveling, and Demon Slayer, etc. which many people get hyped about, I can't bring myself to finish them because of how many generic tropes they include. It makes sense, though; why change the formula if it still works and makes money? But for me, I usually can't even get past two or three episodes before I get bored and stop watching. That’s why I’m so happy that Frieren somehow reignited my joy for watching anime.

Here a little fact for your start into the Series. Every name in the series is a german word and is kind of a explanation about the characters, like: Frieren - feeling cold, a play on her cold emotionless reactions Himmel - Heaven, because a hero is supposed to be in Heaven Eisen - Iron Heiter - beeing in a good mood, the word is also used in Germany if somebody is slightly drunk

Even if you stick with the dub for reactions, I second the earlier comment that said you should watch the sub at some point too. Frieren is brilliantly economical in its storytelling, including the original dialogue. The dub characters feel much more chatty or even verbose to me, like the translation is trying to fancify the original straight-to-the-point delivery most of the characters have in the original.

This show is so good in dub so I’d recommend staying that route. This comes from a very sub heavy anime watcher. But this anime will make you cry it’s so wholesome and cute.

I'm surprised that (at least at the moment of me watching), pretty much all comments appear to prefer the dub. Personally I prefer the dub as well (and wrote my own comment to that effect) but watching other reactions, it's very easy to get the impression that I'm in a tiny minority for that. I'm curious if it's staying that way or if all the sub proponents have yet to watch/comment. I guess maybe the average Nerdy audience simply differs from the average anime audience.

Subs are best for this show, but the dub's pretty good. I have no complaints either way.

I hope you stick to the dub. Every channel reacting to this show reacts to the sub, so listening to someone react to the dub is a breath of fresh air.

I definitely prefer the sub for there tones, and slightly different translation than this version. But its whatever you prefer to watch it in.
