Genuinely curious about this switch to TP-link Omada. Do you have any concerns about the hardware security or software functionality since TP-Link is a Chinese company?
@SPXLabs
@SPXLabs Жыл бұрын
Just so we are clear here. Only the “lab” portion of my homelab is switching to Omada. The rest of the home network will remain Unifi and continue to run.

It is not like the USA hasn't been spying on its own people and the world. That being said, it isn't because TP-Link is a Chinese company that it means they will be spying. Also, if you set your network right, your internal network should be isolated, you don't have to use the external OMADA Cloud Service. I have nothing against UNIFI just that their stuff is just a lot more expensive and the quality of UNIFI over TP-Link really is marginal.

You'd be surprised how many of your daily, household items that are made by "Chinese Companies".
@ptessier73
@ptessier73 Жыл бұрын
@@ABP8214 Perhaps. But then again Snowden did demonstrate how deep the USA is doing it. Any type of intrusion is not welcome in my book. All that to say, I wouldn't discard TP-Link just because it comes from a Chinese company.

99% of everything I owe is manufactured or produced in China. When and if other countries can stand up facilities that can compete maybe manufacturers will change it up. But until then, this is the way it is.

However, stability is required from omada side . Unifi is not available everywhere, prices are expensive.

ditch the rack nut for studs, use DAC's for in rack links they have lower latency over the copper

With the switch, have you switched over the home access points to omada as well or are you using a mix of ubiquiti and omada between the two? I'm curious how they interact, if they can be on the same ssid etc so whether you seemlessly go from one network to the other if you are moving throughout your home and home lab etc.
@SPXLabs

Keep us updated when you got to ATT 5gb plan with the 8411. I'm stuck on 1.0.2 patched firmware to enable flow control to get >1gbps upload through my ATT internet. Works great with that patch, but when I tried to upgrade the firmware to the newest release, I was back to the same issue.

Did you switch to go 10g? I'm happy w/ unifi on most days... and ANY day I'm not trying to visualize my topology. Love the short patch cables.
@SPXLabs

I’ve been running 10G for a few years now with Unifi. I’ll still be running Unifi for the home portion of my homelab. But the lab will be Omada for a long while.

Great video, what battery backup unit are yo using? I notice most battery units don't come with built in ethernet cards... That sucks since I have a small home network like Unifi one.

Had Omada, but the router kept on droping my wifi network until reboot... and it was very un-stable... the switch was really good.. and the wifi was ok.. until the router started habing the issues.. i switch to UNIFI... and it is much better.. i like TP-link entry level price.. but stability was my major drop down..
@SPXLabs

I keep hearing such things and if they are true then I will get to shed light onto such issues for the masses. Which is also part of the reason for the "switch". My home network will still be UniFi but my lab will be all Omada.
@ChiekoGamers

I recently transitioned to the Omada ecosystem. The software experience is not as stable compared to Unifi. It really needs a lot of work and fixing. Firmware stability is average.

Mainly because people are constantly asking me questions about it and TP-Link is willing to send me gear. I will still be running UniFI for the "home" portion of my lab.

I don't mind TP Link for switches\hubs but my xp with their routers have been really bad. The software is far worse than unifi and never saw any updates when flaws were found. The hardware itself has been fine and performance was never an issue, just yucky software and potential security flaws.
