Beginnings by Chicago, Drum Cover by Gary Schneider GS on Drums

Beginnings was the first song by Chicago that got me hooked. The horns, the vocals, the melodies and of course the great drumming by Danny Seraphine. Danny plays a lot of awesome fills on this song and his playing is just incredible. I had a few mistakes here and there, but really enjoyed learning this song.

Okay... Danny Seraphine is one of my faves and I would just like to master HIS style for now. Is it true he plays four on the floor 90% of the time and then riffs over it? Also, is it best to start every snare fill with a crash? I dunno what I'm doing. Obviously. I just need a little guidance.

Danny Seraphine is one of my favorite drummers as well. He has his own style, as you mentioned, influenced by big band and jazz. He studied at DePaul under Bob Tilles, and later with Dave Weckl. His influences were Buddy Rich, Tony Williams, Elvin Jones, Grady Tate, Ringo Starr, Mitch Mitchell, and Hal Blaine. So he has a style I would say is closer to Mitch Mitchell, who add fills, crashes and snare buzz rolls at various places, not always on the quarter note. He doesn't play a lot of "four on the floor" per se, but sometimes will play a lot of 8th notes on the bass drum and incorporate drum hits on the "e" and the "ah" as well. His crashes vary from quarter to 8th notes....sometimes on 1, but not always. Others may want to chime in, but that is how I hear HIS style. I hope that helps.

Thank you kindly! I play to the original track and not to drum less tracks. So I try to play the fills and notes the drummer plays.
