I served in the Marine Corps for 12 years. After seeking my next mission, I found myself doing towers at the Fire academy. I've been a full time paid firefighter for over thirty years and a captain for nearly 18 years and I am so God damned sick of this firefighter worship!! I work with too many guys of all ages and experience who believe their own hype. They try and make the job to be more than it is. Heroes is such a seriously overused word. Ours just look like a young child sexually abused while the parent sits across the room smirking as PD is handcuffing him. Or the 22 week preemie that was born without a pulse, she’s only the size of my hand and doing the best one finger CPR I could do while bouncing down the road in the back of the ambulance. I only mention these because these are calls I’ve had just in the last 2 weeks. My crew didn’t know it but I cried after both those calls. But we can help/respond to fight brush fires, work in detail on MVA/MVC’s, operate on missing person/outdoor searches, Technical rescues (with sufficient knowledge) and help with exterior fire ground operations... etc. In my county, the Junior Program starts at 14 and goes all the way through 18.
