Behind the Heartbreak of the 2018 Supercars Bathurst 1000

The scene was set. The Erebus Penrite Racing #9 car driven by David Reynolds qualified first after the Top 10 Shootout and would start from pole position. Rookie teammate Anton De Pasquale shocked the entire Supercars field by qualifying third. The dream of back-to-back Bathurst 1000 victories for Erebus was alive.
Reynolds dominated most of the race, including beating his own lap record. Lap 135 saw David’s leg begin to start cramping, affecting his performance and ultimately allowing Craig Lowndes to take the victory, leaving many questions un-answered.
For the first time since the race, Mark Larkham speaks with David Reynolds, Erebus Team Principle Barry Ryan and Head Engineer Alistair McVean to find out exactly what happened, when it started to go wrong and who made the key decisions which led to co-driver Luke Youlden to finish in 13th position.

Absolutely agree. If you're cramping up, you're well beyond the point of a quick fix. That's major dehydration, nutrition imbalance and you're pretty much spent. He should have been brought out at the first hint of issues. We live and learn, but at this level, that's a very rookie management mistake to make. Astonishing in fact.

I watched this race and heard Dave on the radio on TV. As an extremely amateur coach of sporting teams over the years, by the tone of his voice and how he was speaking, even I new he was cooked and they needed to get him out. The red mist can overtake anyone and lead to errors of judgement but they need to be a bit more ruthless and dispassionate about these things.

Try riding an air cooled Ducati through city streets on a 40+ centigrade day. Filter to the front of traffic, at many sets of traffic lights, and you're sitting between two cars engines while the heat of the bike rises up from between your legs on. I have empathy for others in those conditions.

We were yelling at the TV when Erebus came in for that fateful stop pleading with them to put Luke Youlden back in the car. Of course hindsight is 20/20, but like Barry says if Youlden had gotten back in the car they still had a chance. They would still have finished on the podium for sure. Such a shame what happened.

If you go on leading by 30sec with 49 laps to then get a flat tryes or leading and getting a plastic bag in the grill or just plain mistakes when you have the fastest car then Lowndes should have won 10 or 11 bathursts by now but instead he only has 7 none the less the old guy forced the young guy to drive so hard his body shut down

A vegan diet can be perfectly healthy if done right. Everything a human needs can be vegan. Also, just because it's vegan, doesn't mean it's rabbit food.
