At The Heart of It: A Look Inside the Gibson Memphis Factory
• At The Heart of It: A ...
The Wildwood Guitars team was recently invited to the hallowed halls of the Gibson Custom Shop, an awe-inspiring place where anything is possible, and dreams become reality. The Custom Shop was gracious enough to allow us to document that journey, taking in the history, the legacy and the iconic heritage of arguably the most recognizable instruments on the planet.
Gibson’s unrelenting passion and dedication to tone has cemented it’s legacy as a world class brand and the guitar of choice for decades. The attention to detail and workmanship that the Gibson Custom Shop imparts to each of these is the best in their history, approaching a new golden age of instruments that rival the classic vintage pieces we all know and love.
It was our job during our trip to translate that magic and share the wonder of a Gibson Custom Shop instrument with the world.
Join us on our journey to Nashville, TN; where we'll pull back the curtain and step inside the always inspiring Gibson Custom Shop.

@@The_Real_Daniel you might be right there but I'll take it. Fender guy for my whole life and just got my first epiphone which is one of the inspired by gibson models. I bought a 2014 historic 59 reissue I bourbon burst. just a gorgeous guitar. it developed issue in the neck. So the tech I go to said send it to Gibson. now let me be clear I am not a rich man I have wanted a flame top Les Paul since I was 13 living in Seattle. I've had many lost balls but I've never had one of the reissues and finally for my 50th birthday I got the cash together and spent way more than I thought I would and I bought this guitar and hand-picked it from a room full of guitars so when I was told I had to send it back to the Gibson Factory to get it fixed I felt like I was losing a child. and this was a light absolutely freaking gorgeous guitar with a Great Neck beautiful color and amazing flame that was incredibly resonant. all I can say is thank you Bob Burns and the Gibson custom shop if you don't haven't heard about Birds Bob Burns is one of the folks you talk to on the phone and customer service at the Gibson custom shop and he is an incredibly nice and patient man man that helped me in every way you could and when they found they had to replace my guitar you sent me pictures of what they had on hand and allowed me to pick another one. well I couldn't see the guitar so I had to trust them to pick one out three pictures I was able to narrow it down but I wanted one of the same kind of neck I wanted one that was less than eight and a half pounds I wanted one that was as beautiful as well. Hadn't and picked myself the one pictured above is the one they sent me it is Curly flame where the one that I picked myself in more obvious flame but it plays better than my old one it sounds better than my old one and to be honest it's more beautiful than my old one thank you Gibson custom shop thank you and God bless you Bob Burns. That is great customer service and that's worth paying for.

aeartress it seemed to develop a bow or twist that caused it to frett out on the D and G string between the 13th and 15th frett. I use rather heavy strings 11's or 12's depending on the guitar. This guitar was one I hand picked out of quite a few. in 2014. my tech said send it to Gibson and let them fix it if you have a warranty. So I did. new guitar does play better high on the neck. I'm letting it hang out for another couple weeks so it will have been in Arizona for at least 2 months before I take him to my guitar tech and ask him set it up see if you can get the action a little bit lower and intonate it

aeartress yeah I've got a blacklist pahlavan since 1980 and I've got a 90s SG and I've never had any issues and the new guitars terrific and I've owned I don't know how many Les Paul's I got my first one in 1976 and I've never had an issue so I got to figure it was just a bad piece of wood of course it came from Nashville and I live in Arizona and I play outdoor gigs a lot I figured between the Heat and heavy strings and I'm picky I don't feel I should be hearing any goddamn buzzing on a guitar I paid custom shop $ for. you know what I mean

The "sunburst" concept originated from the look of old violins/cellos/violas which where all originally varnished in a solid color, but over the years of polishing and cleaning changed into that beautiful shaded look. It happened naturally to these old instrument. Then the look of these old violins was copied in Europe for the American market. That's the origin of the "sunburst".

Nothing is optional in these modern times due to OSHA rules. The dust collection system at Gibson Custom is immense and so effective that it causes weather patterns inside the building. If OSHA felt that a mask was necessary, you would see a mask. OSHA rules are strict, non compliance is very expensive. Dust masks are cheap.

With my income bout the only thing I can afford is guitar picks. This has always been my dream to have a great Les Paul. I've always had to take less in everything though, so I should be use to just dreaming!

One of my Les Paul's looks like Slash's beat up Paul. It got that way through a few thousand hours of practice, a ton of jam sessions, lots of sweat, cigarette smoke, pot smoke, spilled alcohol and survived the wrath of several ex-girlfriends.

I'm not a huge fan of aging. Having said that I just purchased a "light aged" R9..... not because it was aged, because it smoked every other guitar in the shop. It feels so good in my hands. I love it.

RIP Custom Shop Memphis. You guys/gals made two of my favorite guitars, an 06' Tom Delonge signiture and a 08' Firebird VII Non Reverse w/mini-humbuckers(they also made them with p-90s that run). Proposed Shutdown announced 1-3-19. All Memphis Operations to be consolidated into one building akin to Gibson's bankruptcy restructuring. 😣

I have noticed a lot of comments about the Richlite fretboard so I wanted to share some of my thoughts. I personally own two Gibson Les Paul Customs. One, a 2011 model, has an Ebony fretboard and the other, a 2016 model, has a Richlite fretboard. Both of them are absolutely amazing guitars in every single way. I have sat down with both guitars to see if I can detect any noticeable differences between the two in terms of feel and tone. When it comes to feel, the Ebony and the Richlite feel the exact same. They both feel smooth to the touch and are both very high quality. When it comes to tone, (please note a lot of different factors could be at play here), my Les Paul with the Richlite fretboard seems to have a slightly warmer tone whether I am using the bridge pickup or the neck pickup. The variation in tone is almost unnoticeable but after many hours of trying to listen for any disparity that is the conclusion I have come to. Looks-wise, Ebony has a grain while Richlite does not. So no matter if your Les Paul Custom uses an Ebony board or a Richlite board, you are getting a wonderful and awesome guitar that you will enjoy forever. To shift focus, Gibson is NOT using Richlite as a cost cutting measure. In the latter half of 2014, I believe, Ebony wood was moved to Appendix II of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (also known as CITES). According to the CITES official website, cites.org/eng, "Appendix II includes species not necessarily threatened with extinction, but in which trade must be controlled in order to avoid utilization incompatible with their survival." This decision by CITES forced Gibson and many other big brands to find alternatives to Ebony. More recently, smaller brands are being forced to change from Ebony as well. It is very possible that Rosewood will also be moved to Appendix II in the near future. If you would like to see the Appendices of the CITES convention (valid from 4 April 2017), here is the webpage's address: cites.org/eng/app/appendices.php You will locate Ebony under Appendix II which is near the bottom of the webpage. I hope this was helpful.

You should see the neck dive on my '16 SGHP. With the robotuner, it needs a deep sea diver helmet. I'm thinking about routing a hole in the back and dropping some lead near the control hole. I think I'll route a Jr control panel sized hole, I should be able to add a pound of lead or so and slap a cover plate on it. For $1550, this shouldn't be my problem.
