@@dinopalavra876 Behind the neck presses? Not at the time no. I was in my early 20’s then. I started tearing labrums and rotator cuffs around 30 years old.

Most people doing that exercise wrong that's why they got injured. I've been doing that exercise for almost 30yrs never get any injuries, only gains for my upper lats an add up for perfect V Taper exercise.

Thanks for confirming my approach/view on these: not as a main, heavy lift, but instead a mobility accessory. On chins and pulldowns to the front, I get really good lat activation but almost zero contact in the middle (scaplula?). So I do behind the neck puilldowns as either warm-up or after the heavy work, in order to work on mobility and that scapula connection.

Robby Robinson is 76 and does many variations of behind the neck pull downs as does Mike O Hearn and they have no issues. Like anything just do it proper and if something doesn't feel right then make a change.

Great perspective. I'm definitely not a fan of these, I have pretty good shoulder mobility, but whenever I try these I always feel like I'm going to tweak my neck. But that could also be because I'm going too heavy or I'm trying to get too far down.

In my personal experience, tightening the core as mentioned in the video is a game changer. If you can’t do the behind the neck press while keeping a neutral spine, your shoulder mobility might not be as good as you think.

I have tendonitis in my right shoulder and i recently started trying out the BTN Press and i can definatly say that i feel the tendonitis part "stretch" when i place the bar behind my neck, but it didn't hurt and i will try it out for a few weeks atleast to see how they feel and then maybe start applying a bit of load.

I’ve always done behind the neck with no issue whatsoever not one time-only time I ever tweaked my cuff or shoulder was in front presses. After many years I know only can behind the neck press I can’t press in front because of so much cuff damage and massive bone spurs and arthritis. Behind the neck cause zero pain for me probably cause I’m so used to them but it also takes the rotator cuff out of the equation when I keep them at forehead level

Isn’t it the same as doing tricep extensions and snatch? If so, why are those encouraged while behind the neck press discouraged

How is it the same as tricep extensions? Nothing close. Your elbow shouldn’t be behind your head when doing tricep extensions unless you’re doing them wrong

Hey mindpump I have a few questions for you: Do you think riding the stationary bike to finish my leg day is a good or bad idea? I’m talking about 15-20 minutes fairly intense biking. I have a small umbilical hernia…should I avoid ab exercises? My doctor told me it’s okay to lift heavy and I’m going to get it fixed in two months. If I’m already skinny should I not do cardio? Or do cardio but just increase calories a bit? I think I’m a hard gainer, I’m only 154 pounds and eat 2700 calories a day, yet don’t gain weigh. I do have an active job and can walk 3 miles or more each shift plus I lift and bent a lot

Been doing them for decades but in my older age I do them @ 45 degrees, I have full ROM in my shoulders full regular cuff building movements. I'm at 230, full ROM @ 45° pull downs to top of spine. It also builds the strength and power for the next oh don't do movements in bodybuilding.... Theirs the science to the dangers and science to doing it properly, been doing for decades old school is not for new school. Takes skills concentration proper form and a clear understanding of the purpose of the exercise. I'm 50+ and in all guillotine bench positions pause rep 185 workout weight. With a max of 205. For me its the ultimate full upper body method of producing big wide shoulders and the upper plateau of the chest. I only train certain movements on the smith machine for safety purposes.

Agree to disagree- if anything makes shoulders stronger. (Sure be careful) Been doing this since 15 and I’m in my 50th year.

Personal anecdote, it seems the eccentric and huge straining in vulnerable/stretched positions tend to cause the most injuries. Keep the weight light, and don't control the eccentric (klokov style) and you should be fine as long as your shoulders are mobile enough.

Don't make the mistake of thinking well body builders do behind the head so it must be good. Ask your self how many of those body builders have had shoulder surgery or just have hurt shoulders. I can't find anyone in my gym that lift weight consistently and doesn't have a hurt shoulder or two. Hell most body builders are in horrible shape at the end of their career. They can't move their arms their legs are shot. Never use body builders for a example of what is good for your body they are full of injuries and they mistreat their bodies for competition.

Behind the neck pull downs are NOT good. Sorry. You lack knowledge! Its a non natural movement. Pull downs are the easy version of pull ups. Would you ever try a behind the neck pull up? Hell no! Point done!!! Ignorance to those who do it.
