For those saying that Taylor was dumb because he didn't look up at the moon and realise that he was on Earth the whole time, the astronaut Dodge says this in the beginning of the movie: "It doesn't add up. There's a mantle of dust around this planet and yet it's as humid as a jungle. Thunder and lightning and yet no rain. Cloud cover every night and that strange luminosity, and yet no moon."

I reckon the nuclear wars created some strange climate on earth, as for no moon, maybe the humans destroyed that too, hence why there were major geological changes in just 2000 years

It could've been New Moon in which case there would be no moon visible. However within a week or so the phases of the moon would become visible and I assume the time scale of the movie is a couple of weeks. Also it could've been cloudy the whole time
