the audio captured on this record (specially drums and bass) is one of the best ever on a rock album.

Great video! I lived in Seattle during that era and remember talking with Matt Cameron about both the Badmotorfinger and Superunknown snare sound. According to him, at least "Black Hole Sun" drums were recorded at Robert Lang's studio which had an incredible stone room and gave that Keplinger "the" sound. Well, along with Matt's playing, obviously. I had a chance to visit with Robert before we moved from Seattle and man, that is one crazy studio. All dug up under the hill his house is on. So big he literally had a basketball court in there...under the freaking house!

What a great insight! The snare does have a certain ring to it so I can believe that about the studio ambiance, thank you for sharing!

@@mixingmasteringonline Yeah, that was such a cool time and to be able to see the room (never did end up seeing Bad Animals) and talking with the guys was great. Matt used to visit the drum shop my buddy ran so I ended up helping him buy a 24 track analog machine and we hooked it up to his Pro Tool rig in his home back then. All of those guys were really nice and none of them acted like "rock stars".

Its a good "ring" though, if there was a good ring for snares but that snare sounds amazing and is up there with alex van halens unusual but killer snare sound.always wondered what he used,i thought maybe a yamaha recording custom cranked down and beat to smithereens! olr a black beauty brass snare perhaps.

@@jefflyon2020 From what I understand, Alex always used a Ludwig 6 1/2 x 14 Supraphonic with a Remo CS black dot head (clear with the black dot). Love Alex's snare tone!

Fun fact: All the English voices for Nintendo and Humongous Entertainment games were recorded at Bad Animals in Seattle, Washington. So was the orchestral soundtrack to Microsoft Windows XP.

For the bass cabinet mics, The Audio Technica AT4047 wasn't produced until years after the record came out. It was probably a AT4033. They have a similar appearance.

great video. Jason Corsaro deserves huge credit for his engineering on this album. Supposedly the tracks that O Brien received were quite heavily grouped (on his request), so he really left a big impact on the sound of the album.

Thank you so much for this video! I had always wondered about the recording of this album... It came out when I was a little kid and has greatly influenced my songwriting (in my life in general). Since I was little during the grunge explosion I can see to some bias for the good groups(Soundgarden Nirvana AIC Melvin's Mudhoney Tad and the screaming trees).. that being said, and also considering that I listen to a lot of late 60s early 70s music which I adore too, I truly feel like this is a top turn album if you're into rock and roll... There is not one mediocre song on it all the songs are great! I think Dave from Nirvana said it best for Chris's songwriting was like the perfect combination of Sabbath and the Beatles -in particularon this album.. in fact because I'm getting more seriously in the song right now I have stopped listening to it because I'm afraid I'm going to take from it I love it so much! I have to be honest that producer sounds like a douchebag to me-it's a great work of art but I credit the band not him.. BTW I love that jam session at the end of it! If you guys were in the midwest USA I'd love to play with you guys!

Love the drum sound on this album. My favourite of the grunge era bands. The only downside for me is that it’s too long. If it was a 9 or 10 song album, it would’ve been perfect. That’s why vinyl was good, it only allowed for about 45mins maximum, meaning fewer filler songs.

@@mixingmasteringonline If you talk about Rust in Peace, please mention how they screwed up the remixes/remasters. I love the tight compressed, dry sound of the original RIP and especially Countdown to Extinction. Plus, they lost some of the vocal master tapes for RIP and Mustaine had to re-record certain parts, it sounds awful.

"One Other that I can't Recall", is that on the Japanese release? Great Album, that really is all that can be said, trying to quantify it and it's merits is futile, it has that Magic all Classic Albums have. Your song : I'd cut a little of the highs out and add a bit of reverb to the whole mix. A little too bright and dry.

Ok now it makes sense why I always felt the song superunknown sounded funny. They used room mics only for drums. One of the two strongest songs on the album in my opinion. They should’ve added a good thumping kick sound to the mix so you can bump the track louder. My only drawback about the album.
