This is really interesting. I've used your tools dozens of times and it is a wonderful service you provide to the community. Now I know when I look at it on the screen the total width should be roughly that of a letter-size sheet. Good to know!

I love the nib nook, I have compared many times when deciding which nib size to order. It’s so helpful to be able to look up a nib I have at home and compare it to one I am buying too. Fantastic tool. I very much appreciate the work you put in.

I have referred back to the nib nook many times, it's an awesome resource and it is reassuring to see that you make efforts to keep new samples consistent with samples from years ago. It's frequently hard to discern the differences between and EF, F, and FM. My one request is that you have somebody go back and re-scan all of the samples at a higher resolution. As it is, it seems like the difference in line thickness is often less than a single pixel from your scanner.

You should consider making an ASMR with different pens writing! I find that sound so satisfying. I thought I would prefer fine/extra fine since that's what I prefer in ballpoint pens, but one of my favorite pens is the Jinhao X750 with the medium nib.

even if some nibs aren't meant to flex, there seems to be a threshold between bouncing and slightly opening up the flow, and flex that starts to look like really flexing out. the century 3776 fine that I have has that very soft control between making it close to Japanese UEF and F without terrifyingly flexes out, and using Iroshizuku may alter the sensitivity for being thinner ink than the one black ink that came with the pen. Those differences caused massive discrepancies between nib size reviews, but especially around Japanese users/reviewers that tries it new vs using it daily(which is yet to be found because there hasn't been much who really like the 3776 for so long and dailies it)

Thank you for this video. When a company is confident enough to demystify their processes, I take it as a sign that they really know their stuff. As a scientist, nothing irks me more than irreproducibility. I can no longer say that the Goulet Pen Company is trying to hide their methods!

Can you please request better packing between shipping box and box containing the pen? My Homo Sapiens box was slightly crushed in one corner; the pen was not damaged. Also, I noticed that the Goulet book markers are not included in the shipping box anymore? I enjoyed the cardboard markers to keep my place in my current box.

These would be great for new and upcoming pens. At least we know what the lines will look on these pens. It would help with the decision-making process, especially if you're ambivalent about getting it or not.

I appreciate that and agree 100%. Newer pens I could try to do, that’s what I was attempting to do here...but “new” has to be really broadly interpreted right now as I’m just not able to crank out videos at the pace I used to right now. Upcoming...wow I’d love to show that, but it’s super duper rare I get to see one of each nib size of a pen that’s yet-to-be-released. -Brian

@Brian: Would you see any difference in overall line thickness if you wrote placing the sheet on a hard surface rather than the more spongy surface of multiple sheets in a pad?

Yes. The softer the surface the broader the line.

blanketcandy That's what I thought. Then how can we be sure that what Brian is writing is as accurate as possible?
@bangbang51211
@bangbang51211 4 жыл бұрын
Frank Strahan You can't be. As long as the pad isn't messed up or Brian doesn't change his writing pressure a ton it'll be close enough. The perfect test would be a single sheet of a certain paper on the most common writing surface written by a machine using the exact same ink. The thing is these are fountain pens and each one is different enough that it makes that level of control pointless.
@Harlem55
@Harlem55 4 жыл бұрын
@@LimitlessFrank It's not going to be- youre going to get differences between pen to pen of the same brand and nib size. Your pen is also going to adapt itself to your writing style in terms of how the pen will wear which further changes the quality with time.

Hi Brian! Great video as always! I have more of a technical question regarding retractable fountain pens. Do you know why most of them have the clip near the nib instead of in the back like regular clip pens? It seems so smart to make a fountain pen retractable but it seems like holding the pen could be uncomfortable which then kind of defeats the purpose of it being retractable?

Hi Brian, you're a really sweet guy. I like a nib I've got on my grandad's Parker 51, and I don't know that I've ever tried a 'broad', but it seems very pleasantly the broader side of 'medium'. Deffo my favourite of my four fountain pens. Kind of interested in the Curidas, though. Will look it up.

Not a fan of shaking the ink bottle. I was looking to purchase some glass or stainless steel beads that could do the job of mixing with some swirling. Anyone else had any success with this?
@pat412pear
@pat412pear 4 жыл бұрын
Bill Koslosky, MD I would be afraid of a glass bottle breaking with the beads. I don’t like shaking bottles as it gets ink on the cap and I hate that. What I do is use a pipette to pulse the ink a couple of times. I have also used syringes (3-5cc) with a blunt needle but the plunger action is more difficult than the simple squeeze action of the pipette and you don’t want to be too aggressive. This method also agitates the particulates in shimmering inks well with little fuss or mess. An eye dropper works as well.
