Costume Designer Isabel Toledo and Set Designer Ruben Toledo talk about their collaboration for George Balanchine’s The Nutcracker® by Miami City Ballet.
Miami City Ballet is admired for the vitality, precision, and warmth that its artists bring to the stage. Hailed by the New York Times as “an exceptional troupe, by Balanchine standards, anywhere in the world,” the company continues our annual tradition of presenting an American Nutcracker with its 2017 interpretation of the master choreographer’s quintessential production-not seen at the Center in over a decade.
Venture into a wintery wonderland-inhabited by toy soldiers, waltzing snowflakes and flowers, a Sugarplum Fairy, and a nutcracker who comes to life-with a brave girl named Marie and Tchaikovsky’s iconic score as your guides. Balanchine’s sparkling choreography, more than 100 dancers, a live orchestra, and dazzling new designs by Cuban-American artists Ruben and the late Isabel Toledo, and projections by Wendall K. Harrington, bring Marie’s sherbert-hued journey to life in this festive holiday spectacle that will capture the whole family’s imagination.
