My grandfather worked in Macy’s 34th Street NYC flagship store as a stock and freight clerk delivering merchandise from the loading dock to floor departments for 30 years. He rode these very elevators thousands of times. Thanks so much for posting this video. Very interesting to see where my late Grandpa used to work.

Thanks for the video Andrew! I remember watching this video when I was younger and how much I wanted to visit this place. Yesterday, my dream came true as I visited Macy's! That's unfortunate that they're modding the escalators though.

I've been to that Macy's store a few times (my sister used to work for Macy's and knew how the business worked and what each employee did). I really enjoyed the video. I think this store has the older wooden escalators. Those are a sight to see.

Very awesome video!! That CJ Anderson controller on the AB See elevator looks familiar, I ran an freight elevator with that control but it was marked for Hollister-Whitney elevator and this elevator was in the former Maytag Compny office building ( once was older factory areas) I ran this to haul out trash when i used to work over there. Some great driving there Dieselducy with them handcranks!

Did the one freight elevator have a operator? Where was that man going to when he pressed the doorbell? How many freight elevators are their?
@upanddownadventures10 жыл бұрын
1:29 Did he turn on the elevator? Because of the very major renovations here, and the indicator I heard you got from here, it sounds like some or all of the elevators here are getting modernized? 5:04 Two gates closing inward! That is very rare! I wish you could have seen more elevators here. I am sure there are, or were some more vintage elevators you didn't film here. Do you know the status of the other elevators in this building? If you had been on every service elevator here, this video would have probably been 2 hours long or more!

When I was a kid and we lived in a 22 story building in NYC in the 1970s it had 2 manual Otis freight elevators and 2 Otis automatic passenger elevators, the doorman would shut the light off in the back freight elevator and chock the shaft door a little open, really meant to show tenants the elevator was closed/off after hours. I used to sneak down real late at night and go for joyrides on that back elevator, it was VERY FAST too, I would go full speed to the top and then quickly switch the controller to DOWN and it would make the change so fast I'd almost be hopped off the floor. The one maintenance guy who also ran the elevator would let me run it like that too up and down from the basement to the top. I used to climb on top of the passenger cars there and learned that if I bumped the door switch it would stop the elevator and reset it and it would head back to the ground floor :) One day a guy got in and wanted to go to the top floor, but as the car started to level I bumped the door switch and he wound up having to ride all the way back down and try to get back up again . He wound up walking up from around the 18th or 19th floor after a few tries :)

Cars 57-59 use Gurney H19VTER machines with General Electric CR4464 controllers. I think car 59 was recently modernized but it still has its original machine.

EthanS Elevators You and I rode the Haughton modded elevators in the Times Square building, the one that turned us away was the one on the corner of Main and Exchange.
@HiFiAndElevators2210 жыл бұрын
***** We were on a tour of the building with the U of R's Urbex Club, and we got to see the machine room as we were heading up to the roof (it's laid out in such a way that you pass through the machine room on the way to the roof access door). And yes, we did have permission (the tour was led by the owner of the building). The other interesting thing we noticed about the equipment was that much of it was actually designed by GE (who we didn't know was in the elevator business) for Gurney (who then passed it along to Graves). In fact, in the one elevator that wasn't modded by Haughton, the COP actually has a GE logo below the Graves car switch. ***** We still need to find a time to get a ride on that un-modded elevator.
