Ironic that my father had been stationed in The Philippines during WW II and he often talked about how gracious and welcoming they were to American troops. At the end of his life, he in fact moved into a small private care home when he was needing round the clock assistance and was tended by the owner who was a Filipino male nurse and he clearly felt right at home there.

The production values and acting, etc. was excellent. A nice tight script and direction as well. I couldn't stop thinking how well the male lead could play a young Clint Eastwood convincingly.

I cannot imagine what it was like then... I have a Philapino friend here in Australia - she is 53 yrs and one of 3 sisters ... she here in Australia, one sister in New Zealand and the other in New York,,,, parents still in the Philippines, She does not talk about the West or America... very solid relationships with Asians but not so many white Australians .by choice I would say, the Philippine community is strong here in Brisbane Australia ... she is a lovely funny lady and I can see that there is hurt in her past that makes her and family who they are. Its a shame the sisters did not stay together as family is important I feel ... today the story line is being felt all over the world, displaced people needing food and lodgings will work for whatever offered... it isn't their fault its the businessman making the countrymen unemployed not those working for a pittance... beat up the employer - arrest or sue the employer and the government allowing it to happen for profit. Its not the displaced persons fault running from their country due to western wars in foreign lands ... its ours. Very sad this seems never ending - now its the Middle East, Albania, Ukraine, India... all wanting peace and a better life... if you want peace you need to go to the country strong enough to start all the wars THE WEST the Commonwealth countries, Europe and of course the USA.

Incredible story that I had absolutely no idea had occurred. We had two young Philippine men visit our house one afternoon during summer when I was growing up in Los Angeles. I asked them all kinds of questions about where they were from and found it very interesting that they had come from so far away. I must have been all of twelve years old. They were very kind and friendly and didn’t seem to mind me asking them questions. This was in the early 1960’s. Maybe they were looking for a happy American life.

All the Americans came looking for a better life. They are all immigrants except for the Native Americans

Great acting…great writing, editing, directing, camera work. The dialectical banter like walking amidst political landmines buried in a soil of universal human connection that sometimes provides a safe path to walk along and sometimes hides the danger beneath. The way the truths slowly reveal amidst a reality. Yes the simple conditions and intimate space, brilliant choice. I was married to someone whose parents came to US in their 20s and I never knew about that war nor the Watsonville race riots (can we please start calling them ethnic riots?). I noticed his family had no tolerance for anything negative and when something hard was brought up which was rare, such as his mother recalling her father ducking into the bushes and leaving her on the road when Japanese were shooting, they laughed. I came from tough backround in US which i too was ignoring so I also “looked only on the sunny side” but was older and changing a little bit. I had had to leave school at age 16 to support myself …my husband was more of a typical suburban golden boy I finally realized and yet beneath his entitlement and normal veneer were so many unspoken wounds that made him angry and violent and so far into his 50s he hasn’t looked into the history and blames problems on individuals other than himself….on his way to breeding good rednecks were he to have had children. My family didn’t talk about the hardships the Irish suffered; i only found out later when reading Frank McCourt’s books. Overall i don’t think the Irish were treated as badly as some other ethnicities and less recently also. Nonethelesss, generational PTSD and the cycle of violence when victimized become perpetrators is saturated in so many families about which nothing is said of the roots.
