There is a lot that goes on behind the scenes that we don't see. They even film extra tasks each season, but we rarely see any of the tasks that didn't make it to the studio recordings where the competitors (mostly comedians) come back in and get scored on the tasks that do make it to air. I guess some don't work out or aren't entertaining enough. Perhaps we'll never know. I love the UK version the most, even though we here in Oz now have 3 seasons of our own, and NZ having 5 seasons already shown. You can't beat the original Taskmaster and sidekick of Greg Davies and Alex Horne. The only one I was disappointed in was the failed US version. Having only watched a couple of episodes, it's only really Freddie Highmore that took the tasks seriously and was fun to watch. The others, including the Taskmaster were very poorly cast, they changed the format of the show, its duration, and prize task round, and it just didn't work. And, that's despite Alex Horne going over there and being Reggie Watts' assistant (Reggie was the Taskmaster in the US). But, for anyone that hasn't seen Taskmaster UK, AU, NZ or the many others around the world, give it a go. Even if you don't know the contestants making fools of themselves, you'll soon find you'll get to like them after a few episodes, or at the very least, have a favourite that you want to win. It's a game where you can sit at home and think about how you could tackle the tasks. Would you be smarter? Would you find a shortcut? Would you do better/worse than the contestants?

May I also suggest Would I Lie To You?, which is another great British "game show" that appeals to all ages. British comedy is such an easy rabbit hole to fall into because it's a relatively small place but they have a proportionally high amount of comedians and comic actors, and a strong live comedy scene. QI, Cats does Countdown, The Big Fat Quiz, Nevermind the Buzzcocks, and the dearly departed Mock the Week are other quasi-game shows to check out.
@andyb3430Ай бұрын
I should add that America version of TM (despite Alex's participation) and WILTY died quick deaths because the American comedy scene is too spread out and not at the level it was in the 70-90s when stand ups were very prominent and were getting exposure on late night shows. I've heard they may give it another go, but they'd be better off importing the British version or by casting better known American comedians/actors on the British versions like Paul Rudd & John Hamm appearing on Travel Man. They've revealed that the next Taskmaster will have an well known American on it.
@thequarrywoman1Ай бұрын
@@andyb3430 Oh that's interesting. I didn't know they were going to try TM USA again. Let's see how it goes. So many of them have their own tv shows and movies or participate in them. While British comedy has been doing great with the game show/live audience format. Starting from 2023 is has changed and they restricted full series starting from s13-s14 in select countries for no reason. (If people use VPN to watch the show, the money goes to someone else. If people pirate the episodes, their money goes to no one, or to VPN and pirate services) TM management lost their sanity.

Finally something to show people to help explain what Taskmaster is. I love TM so much but it can hard be hard to get across all the greatness that it is. I think the trouble explaining partially comes from how original the show is. Nothing compares to TM. The show is so dense that this video barely touches on the judging of tasks, prize tasks, live tasks etc. The judging/discussion of a performance on a task is so much of the show and something I always enjoy.
@beemohАй бұрын
Comedy Central tried marketing it as like a reality show, which is not inaccurate, but it's not exactly right either. And then that puts off people who don't like the genre, but also writes a cheque it can't cash for people who do. The US hasn't really done panel games to any long-standing success outside of Whose Line, so it's not like it can be compared to that in the way that TM started on a channel which mostly showed panel games. It's a tough one to describe, certainly.

Great to see Alex finally get his flowers in the US! As an Aussie I could never work out why the American version of the format flopped while other countries made it work, but there really is no replacement for Alex and Greg’s chemistry.
@SCMelArtsАй бұрын
The US version didn't work for lots of reasons. Probably the two biggest were because it was a half hour (including commercial breaks) and mostly because the tone was just completely off. The contestants were really "mean aggressive" (as opposed to aggressively competitive) and it just didn't gel. Most of the people here in the US who watch and love Taskmaster love the sense of humor of the original. Changing the tone to suit what is perceived as the sense of humor here didn't appeal to those of us who love the show in its original form (and now the international forms) and it just didn't catch on with new audiences. Why watch a crappy US version when we can watch the excellent UK and NZ versions instead?

There's something about watching people create under time pressure (and while a passive aggressive ginger is goading them) that is so engaging. @@TheJanooby Not at all. Kongen Befaler (Norway) and Stormester (Denmark) are great. The second series of Taskmaster New Zealand is the best series of all. The format works very well. The US version didn't work for several adaptive reasons: Reggie Watts would have been a great contestant but wasn't a good Taskmaster, the choice of contestants wasn't ideal, and most of all the half hour format completely blew up the show. US - like other countries - would need a TM who didn't do a Greg impression but was instead a representation of humorous hardline justice of that particular culture - probably not someone from the US comedy circuit or presenters. An American Taskmaster was already attempted in 2018 With Reggie Watts hosting alongside Horne and it failed. It could be argued why, but it's probably a mix of the difference in humor and the viewership not being big enough for any US network to consider it successful. I do think a US network would be wise to buy the rights to broadcast the UK series in the US, but I don't think there's any US presenter with the right kind of absurdist humor to be able to even come close to competing with Greg or Alex. I don't intend for this to sound mean, but I think a lot of Americans don't understand British humour. Our humour is often ridiculous, self-deprecating, we cheer for the failures, we enjoy the chaos. Too many Americans fixate on the competition and treat it all far too seriously, like the contestants are actually trying to win. I've seen a lot of Americans reacting to TM and can't get past the need to win, so they get angry over the flippant scoring etc. Obviously there is some kind of audience for it in the USA, but they seem to love the original and probably wouldn't enjoy what any US network does, because those execs can't help but meddle.

Please watch this show!!! I hope they never cancel this show!!❤❤

I’ve watched every episode and many of the foreign iterations. I value my time and it has been well spent.

The way US networks change stuff is the reason why the US Taskmaster failed.

I've been watching the individual careers of Greg and Alex since QI and WILTY. Two brilliant comics who deserve all the success they're reaping at the moment.

I don't think ABC knows what "behind the scenes" means. This was just an interview.

I’m surprised they didn’t mention ANY of the OTHER COUNTRIES!! This show is worldwide phenomenon fun that the we in U.S. are catching up to. I’ve watched all of UK, NZ, AU, Norway, Belgium, Finland, Sweden and Denmark. Haven’t seen Portugal, Croatia or South Africa yet. If you haven’t checked it out, your missing out.

Nobody told her that Alex can only be addressed as 'Little Alex Horne'?

People who aren't Greg are allowed to call him Alex or Alex Horne.

I've been watching british comedy tv shows since I fell in love with Monty Pythons Flying Circus when I was a kid. Blows most shows in the USA away. Taskmaster is my favorite with 8 out of 10 cats does countdown coming in 2nd!

They didnt seem to mention the disaster that was the US version of Taskmaster.
@yorgentorgenherdeeder1090Ай бұрын
Right?! They should have shouted out the other series as well. Australia and New Zealand are in English and I think just as funny as uks
@elwyndudeАй бұрын
@@yorgentorgenherdeeder1090 Yeah I just started watching some of the Aus one and it is a good watch, even though I dont know the comedians. Id like to see a Canadian version tbh, I think they could do ok.

So glad they started making the show available on KZbin. I was an early US adopter and the many ways and hacks I had to use to get episodes of the show early on was insane. But worth it.

I love that Gregg is impressed with free cheesecake in the US, implying that over here we give him the taskmaster nothing. Also, it reminds me of him talking about bumping into Gaffney on Cats Does Countdown who told him about the hotel giving out free massages

Exactly true. Found this searching for an alternative to the news during Covid, Ukraine war times. Keep 'em coming guys! Please!

It’s not a coincidence they’re showing so many Sally Phillips clips (;

Fun fact, Alex Horne is part of a music group and they wrote and performed the theme tune to Taskmaster 🎺

Probably happened back when Greg and Alex appeared on Seth Meyers.

The venue was overbooked so not everyone could get in. That’s where they promised to come back. So yeah. You might be lucky.

Greg will be touring the US in 2026. That's his stand up comedy show though, which is very different from the Greg in Taskmaster.

The whole show is just one big endorphin rush. I don't think I have watched a single episode where I *haven't* laughed so hard that I couldn't breathe. It's absolutely brilliant. I even have favorite tasks that I go back and watch repeatedly because they make me feel good.
@hamcakesАй бұрын
so funny that they don't even bother to mention the time they tried to do an American version like way way back when haha. It feels like all of us fans have collectively decided to repress that.
