How can special effects and puppetry secrets last employed in the 1960s be revived for use in the 21st century? That was the challenge posed to the team of filmmakers behind 'Thunderbirds: The Anniversary Episodes'! In this behind the scenes documentary, the crew reveal the tips of the trade that needed to be employed in order to create three brand new episodes of Thunderbirds for the series 50th anniversary - this making of covers "Introducing Thunderbirds", "The Abominable Snowman" and "The Stately Homes Robberies" with contributions from original series director David Elliott, Lady Penelope sculptor and puppeteer Mary Turner, actor and fan Sanjeev Bhaskar, producer Stephen La Rivière and many more.
To celebrate the 50th anniversary of Gerry and Sylvia Anderson's (Fireball XL5, Stingray, UFO, Captain Scarlet, Joe 90, Space:1999) classic series, the team from Century 21 Films produced three brand new episodes which were based upon three original 1960s voice recordings and produced in association with copyright holders ITV. Their task was to build sets, puppets, and models matching the originals and to marry them with those adapted voice recordings. The final effect should make the audience feel that they're watching three long-lost episodes. The series premiered at the BFI in August 2016, and has enjoyed subsequent screenings at Vue Cinemas and on streaming platforms and home media around the world.
The Thunderbirds Anniversary Episodes are now available on ITV X in the UK and Star Channel in Japan!

About Me:
Century 21 Films Ltd is a multi-faceted production company whose work spans drama to documentary, miniature effects to puppet shows. It was founded by a group of filmmakers who first collaborated on Filmed in Supermarionation, the story of Gerry and Sylvia Anderson's hit puppet shows including Thunderbirds, Stingray and Captain Scarlet.
Since then, we have worked for a multitude of high-profile clients including ITV, BBC, Mammoth Productions, British Film Institute and the Halifax working on projects such Thunderbirds, Endeavour, Doctor Who and The Twilight Zone.
In addition to our regular filmmaking services, we specialise in ‘Supermarionation’ - the puppetry filming technique used to make shows like Thunderbirds and have collaborated with ITV repeatedly to provide specialised services. Our work has been featured on The One Show, This Morning, Good Morning Britain, BBC News, ITV News and Mastermind.

Thunderbirds, Capt Scarlet, Joe 90 etc are just the best, most exciting, incredibly dynamic, thrilling all action story telling drama series ever made (for kids!?!). And the music still blows my head off. Everything in those shows was turned up to 11, plus some! I just love 'em! Everything about them was unique in TV at the time. IMHO there's Not been anything as good since, tbh. I'm in my 60's now and I still watch them when they are repeated on TV.

When I first heard the term Supermarionation I assumed it was a fan club oriented around Super Mario. Thunderbirds is SUCH nostalgia for my childhood. I was born in 1997 so I wasn't around when it originally aired but it sure as hell was on telly when I was very little. Very vivid memories.

Although I was a liitle french boy, when Thunderbirds arrived on french tv in the 80's, this has been by far the most enjoyable experience I had as a kid watching television. I was just stunned by this program. And now, forty years later, I just realise how big it had to be to make all this happen, in all ways possible. No words to express my joy, and my admiration for the idea, the talent, the courage and all the rest to build this unic creation. thousand thanks to all the team behind this magic!

You guys need to make an official unofficial continuation of the original series. The original series only had 2 seasons, 32 episodes total. Imagine seeing the series continue with a third season and perhaps a fourth season, that would bring so much joy and excitement to every grown up out there who watched the first two seasons as a kid. That would be the best thing ever. Of course, it wouldn't be under the supervision of Gerry and unfortunately some of the original voice actors aren't around anymore. But think about it, a brand new season, full length episodes, continuing the story of International Rescue, using the original supermarionation techniques but also at the same using modern technology of the 21 century. You're going to score with that! :D

AI for the voices. But funding and time, and the desire are key. It takes a lot of work, as we know. I’d love for what you suggest to happen, but… would it sell long term? Who knows. Fingers crossed.🤞🏻

The only surviving cast member is David Graham, and he's 98. But also, I disagree. The original TV show has become very special-and I feel like recreating the show would make it not special anymore... not to mention how outrageously expensive making a show like Thunderbirds nowadays.

The Thunderbirds series was made for one reason: To softly disclose what Humanity's enemy is doing, have us watch it without understanding this, enjoy it which is the same as consenting to their evil, and thus let them off the hook for their evil. The 'family' whose identities must be kept secret represent the bloodline families that have been ruling here for eons, controlling all the wealth, and are now in the final phase of pushing out their NWO.

They have tried modern takes on thunderbirds, none can come close to the original, the film that Johnathan Frakes directed was diabolical and the new cartoon series, well it’s just not thunderbirds, if they had done the cartoon version using the same equipment and characters then it would have been ok, but nothing beats the original, I hope they go on to make many more episodes, I for one will buy them. What I’d really like to add to my collection is a massive thunderbird 2

Thunderbirds was the best thing that Gerry Anderson ever created - because to the inexperienced audience, the stories and TV were still both fresh. If the series had been made in the US, the static puppet faces would have been less effective that in the UK where the "stoic" British upper class face was a strong stereotype. That the stories and voice actors were the key is evidenced by the records being used to create visually augmented "re-enactments". The series have been a radio serial at a much lower production cost, faster, and been just as popular. Anderson should have quit after Thunderbirds ended and opened a CG shop for others to utilize. Later Anderson series had better CG, had better effects, looked more realistic, but had only one story line- the Earth was being attacked by some mysterious alien force and there were gadgets. There is just so far you can stretch that before it becomes repetitive and boring. The two series that featured human actors UFO and Space 1999 seem to have gone out of their way to find human actors that were either shallow or treated like puppets. They really weren't allowed to emote and their characters were very difficult to relate to as human beings - which detaches the audience from the story. Their relationships were limited, flat - two dimensional at best and the stories were frankly awful - "sci-fi" with implausible physics. Gene Roddenberry's original Star Trek started with many of the same problems but quickly adapted and grew because STO used multiple experienced sci-fi writers and directors. Anderson never learned to true widen his narrow vision and lift his thumb. That's why everything he ever did and all of the remakes and retrospectives still wreak of his limited vision.

Personally was a bit annoyed when the woman costume designer "irked" she was trying to make Penelope a "bit more masculine" or something like that she said, I thought "geez.. it was the mid 60's and a great time and why would you want anything to be any different??" (it's always these days that women in movies, cartoons etc. always gotta behave like men etc. and not all people appreciate this) 🤷‍♂

@@callummarks2080 No, she said she preferred her in clothing that was a bit more masculine - which has nothing to do with making a character more masculine. It was purely her personal preference based more than anything else on the odd proportions of the puppets. And is totally in keeping with the spirit of the originals.

I would bike after school to visit the small unit on Slough Trading Estate to watch Thunderbirds being made. Huge amount of memories and knowledge of how this and previous Gerry Anderson productions like Fireball XL5, Supercar etc were made. Luckily for 20th Century Films the American model company Revell were situated a few units away and their scrap skip at the rear of the building came in handy for many cleverly modelled building interiors. SO many wonderful memories of SO many gifted people. How about Derek Meddings for one. 👏👏👏👏👏

Great work guys! Loved all the Anderson productions as a boy. Who would have thought then that I would go on to be a puppeteer with the Jim Henson Company and the BBC amongst many others…but is a Gerry Anderson production I would love to have done before my career ended. Congrats to all involved!

An art form so distinctive and entrancing. I love that you have done this and hope you can continue if you want to. I watched the original series as a kid and your new making-of video was a real treat.

The Thunderbirds 1965 50th Anniversary 3 Episodes and Documentaries were spectacular. Highly enjoyable and a brilliant addition to the Thunderbirds collection. Pity the Thunderbirds 55/GoGo 50th Anniversary Episodes Collectors Edition blu-rays are only in Japan and so hard to find tho ....

15:06 wires breaking is not necessarily a bad thing and in fact might lead to a happy accident that changed the entire format of Thunderbirds as we know it today. If I remember properly Thunderbirds was originally meant to be 30min episodes same as its predecessors and successors. BUT in filming the landing of the Fireflash onto the elevator cars in Trapped in the Sky, the wires snapped on Remote Control Car 3 causing it to veer off entirely. Rather than a full reshoot the team decided to make this part of the scene to add dramatic tension that impressed Lew Grade that much he wanted the series to be one hour long. Of course we now know the entire scene of Remote Control Car 3 veering off owing to a Radio Fault and smashing into parked jets causing a fire. Fireflash had to overshoot while Virgil had to reset the cars (including the standby car) causing the anti radiation shielding on Fireflash to expire leading to the dramatic final touchdown (which then had another happy accident (?) of Virgil deciding to take a scenic drive off the runway because why not) But as always it was the explosions and the top 3 for me being Reactor 4 in the Mighty Atom (we sure Gerry Anderson and Derek Meddings were not foreshadowing another certain Reactor 4 blowing up 21 years later? 😉 or did the Soviets take some tips on how NOT to shut down a nuclear reactor in major trouble) Zero X. That was a bang And of course, the Missile Base in Thunderbird 6 because why not go out with a very large (non nuclear) bang (and do so again in Joe 90)

So wonderful seeing this brought back to life again. The reason I joined fire rescue was because of Thunderbirds. Well done crew. 🙂

Watched this as a kid, watched it as an adult doing night shift as it came on 6 a.m. Saturday in Melbourne AU about 25 years after being made. I'm now 66, I have a large Thunderbird 2 model and a large Thunderbirds Are Go Thunderbird 2. Am I ill, do I need therapy?

Compared to the nutters of today and insanity of the UN and many Governments, you're completely sane.

I would pay good money to see the sets and stuff they created if they did a examination,as most of the original stuff was destroyed,as a kid who watched the original, yes I am that old

Just wonderful. Have you thought about crowdfunding a new series. You'd definitely get all the publicity you need. 😎
