Behind the Scenes of Titan II "Part 6 - Control Center Level 1"

Time for a break, but not from our behind-the-scenes tour. Today we look at the crew’s quarters to see more about what it was like to pull a 24-hour “alert” in a Titan II missile silo. Follow along every #Titan2sday as we continue to explore this Cold War era missile silo housing the largest land-based missile America ever deployed. Wow, you guys had it great! We didn't have that side desk at MCAFB or LRAFB, and when I came on crew in 84, we had to bring our own food. Fun times in nuclear deterrence! Major Mark Clark USAFR Ret, former senior DMCCC at MCAFB and LRAFB.

Sometimes I am amazed at 19 year old kids and 24 year old officers with the fate of the planet at their fingertips. But then I remember, I turned 21 during my year in Vietnam.

LOL. So true about the circle K's. Don't forget the Stuckeys. Seems like we spent quite a bit of time out at 1-1 if I remember right. I always kinda liked it when we did ordinance because we took control of the site. No one in, no one out. Even the crew had to listen to us. MMT propulsion shop.

This is the first time I have seen the reconstructed Crew Quarters. Thank you, Dave, for the insider's viewpoint. Thank you for standing in the breach between the Ruskies and the US. (I was blessed to be able to fall asleep any where anytime during my 2 years and 9 months in the US Army, 1968-1971.)

Wow im early.... I visited the museum back in 2017. MY question to the museum is this. Why cant we see this part of the museum if its preserved this well? It was blocked off and the lights were off when I went.

Some parts are too small to take a tour group in, some parts are not able to be covered by insurance for safety reasons.

what did crews typically do during their shift? Was there a lot to do other than waiting for messages and the like?

They smoked cigarettes, read books, crossword puzzles, and in the later years they had a TV and a video game (Pong) to pass the time.

@@titanmissile Did the Air Force have lots of "make work" details to keep you busy? Painting, cleaning, inspecting, logging a thousand meter readings, inspection logs, etc? The US Army sure did.
