I know this is an old post, but I will respond with the correct reason. The increased pressure on the subducting slab causes the water to be pushed out of it. The water goes into the mantle above decreasing the mantle's density and thus decreases it's melting temperature. So, the water doesn't melt the rock, it just decreases it's density. This decrease of density then causes the molten rock to rise as well, just like oil in a cup of water. If you were to use a pipet to release oil beneath the water, it rises to the surface because it is less dense than the surrounding water.

This is the issue I have 2% of the people can hear this low deep bass sound sounding like trucks going up a hill or rubbing up the motor on a diesel trucks. The noise does sound like subduction but living way up in the mountains it's hard to believe that it can reverberate all the way from the ocean to the 2500 ft sea level.

There is no plate tectonics on the Earth. Neither chaotic continental drift. The Earth is simply expanding, and the continents and islands are parted forever... Much simpler explanation and much more realistic one! Please consider this alternative!

The movie is very good! But it's just a fantasy, it's not about the Earth. It's funny that "scientists" could state that soft and light water-saturated layers of ocean-bottom sediments could penetrate (together with the basalt substrate) deep into the mantle which has much higher density (at least +10% according to the accepted density models of the Earth). In fact, I support the theory of gradual Earth expansion. The plate tectonics is the biggest mistake in geology in 20th century and should be forgotten!

It really isn't that absurd to think that a body of rock could be pulled down by convection currents in the mantle. I can pull items of less dense substance down under water. The theory of plate tectonics actually answers a lot of questions that could be asked about how earthquakes occur and why they occur in the places they do, with shallower occurring earthquakes near the trench and deeper ones further away from the trench. It also answers why andesite volcanoes occur where they do. I would be interested to hear how you claim hot spot volcanoes work, and the mechanism driving your expanding earth theory. If the earth is expanding, why do we not have they same type of volcanoes along all plate boundaries? Why do we have explosive volcanoes at subduction zones and more "peaceful" volcanoes at spreading centers like the mid-ocean ridge?

Yes, the girl is beautiful. That's why I watched this video several times. But the geological content is poor: tales about impossible things like soft and light layers' "subduction" into much denser mantle.... Not a sound idea. I would recommend the book of Scalera, a bright Italian geophysicist who has written the following book: "A sound idea for new millennium". It's abut obvious Earth expansion.

The melting point of rocks is lowered when in the presence of a liquid such as water, and if that water is hot enough yes it can melt rocks. And I think a professional would know more than you...

@@captainpotatoes9680 the water doesn't melt the rock, it just reduces its melting temperature. The heat melts the rock. You have surrounding mantle at the same temperature that isn't melting, because it doesn't have as much water in it.
