I fought against these soldiers in the Vietnam War and I can tell you without a doubt these men and women were the bravest people on the planet. They were very aggressive and extremely fierce and the Vietnamese people were very fortunate to have such men fighting for their freedom. They never quit!

I worked on a drilling rig with a vietnamese gentleman. He told us that he grew up in underground tunnels, because he was the son of an American soldier. We called him 'squirrel' because he always had a mouth full of sunflower seeds. He had like ten kids, he was a good dude.

Wow! I found it! It's amazing how this scene about the Vietcong rice ration at 14:36 has stayed with me over the decades. You know how you buy rice from the local Chinese restaurant, and it is tightly stuffed into that little white paper box? Well, virtually every time I've opened one of those boxes over the years, I've re-lived the viewing of this quick scene about a Vietcong's rice ration stuffed into a ball and carried into battle. Seriously, tonight we had fried rice for dinner, and I finally decided to search for that scene on KZbin. It took me about an hour of sifting through old CBS news clips, and I can't believe I actually found it! Let me see, in 1965 I was twelve years old, and I'm now 65. How's that for proof of the staying power of a powerful image!

The film says 1965, but I recall seeing it as a 12 year old. I was born in Dec of 1953. Perhaps this video clip is from an earlier broadcast of the same documentary? Maybe I was 11, but I really think that I was 12. Either way, the rice thing still happened to me over and over, and it was so strange to find that the mention of the rice only lasted about 3-4 seconds!

There was never an objective in Vietnam it was just find the enemy and kill them. It was based on getting high enemy body count. To win wars you take the enemy’s land and continue to move forward. In Vietnam when the US took many hills and other vital territories from the enemy they’d just get a body count, take documents and get on helicopters and go back to base and the enemy would go back and refortify their positions.

For example D-Day in WWII by taking the strategic beaches in Normandy and getting a toehold increased our chances of defeating Hitler and freeing France. In Iraqi Freedom we took the enemy’s land and kept moving forward by building forward operating bases as we went further into Saddam’s territory.

Ho Chi Minh was first and foremost a nationalist. Had the United States played its cards right, we would have had a great deal of influence in this area, and the friendship of Ho. Instead we looked at the world as black and white, communist or non communist, no areas of gray. We had absolutely no concept of the history and perspective of the Vietnamese people. They weren't fighting for communism, they were fighting for independence and freedom. The communists stepped in and helped when we failed to do so. When someone throws you a lifeline, you don't ask about their political affiliation. This all resulted in a senseless war that wasted so many thousands of lives, a war we created when we allowed the south to cancel the elections of 1956, that were designated in the Geneva accords. It was well known Ho would win, and that had to be prevented, thus the cancellation of the election.
@Mary-qn2jd
@Mary-qn2jd 4 жыл бұрын
@Cardinal RG Thank you for your response. I'm afraid we will have to continue to respectfully disagree. I don't disagree that Ho was a communist, but he was first and foremost a nationalist, the independence of his country from years of colonial rule was his first priority. I am well aware of what the superpowers thought, and that was their big mistake. The average peasant fighting with Ho against the French would have little to no concept of communism, nor was he fighting for it. He/she was fighting for independence. In fact Ho looked to us for help and assumed that as a former colony ourselves, would understand the plight of him and his people. Instead we aided the French. Had we played our cards right we could have had friendship and influence. Certainly Ho was no saint. Were our Founding Fathers in line for canonization? But honey attracts more flies than vinegar. We would end up blowing an opportunity to have a great deal of influence. Ho was fearful his country's struggle for independence would become another pawn in the battle between the the communist and non communist world. Sadly he would be proven correct. He did not perceive it as such. His goal was independence. People don't have to be on the same side. Are all Americans? Didn't we have an horrendous Civil War? Do we as a nation and people not value our independence? The Vietnamese were supposed to have elections in 1956 to choose a leader and unify their country. It was well known Ho would win. Of course, being he was a communist, this could not be allowed. The elections were canceled by what was supposed to be the temporary gov't of the south with our support. Didn't the Vietnamese have the right to determine who would lead them, whatever the rest of the world thought? Yes independence did drive them. They viewed us as the new occupying force, the new colonizers. They loathed the Chinese, having had a long history of conflict with them. They were not about to be their "puppets". This was made plain to Robert McNamara when he spoke to the Vietnamese after the war ended and the suggestion of being puppets to the Chinese enraged his Vietnamese hosts. The Russians and Chinese, as well as other communist countries gave assistance to Ho. Political support alone isn't a lifeline, but weaponry and other necessities to continue to fight and survive are. These powers were only too happy to help if it would drain the blood and capital of the United States, as well as create discord for the US internally and abroad, just like we were only too happy to help the Mujahadeen "freedom fighters" against the Russians in Afghanistan. Its how the game was played. "It’s curious that you’d expect the West to even consider supporting him". Come on, considering some of the tyrants and dictators "the west" has put in power and climbed in bed with, including our own government? The time period I refer to is when we became involved. First with "advisers" and then combat troops, all after 1956. It was gradual. One of the biggest fears was that one of our bombers would hit a Russian supply ship in a North Vietnamese harbor. Our actions only unified the Vietnamese around Ho, where otherwise they may not have been. Ultimately he won, even if it was posthumously. As I said, these were people whose history, culture, and perspective we had absolutely no concept of, and a terrible price would be paid because of that fact.
@Mary-qn2jd
@Mary-qn2jd 4 жыл бұрын
@Cardinal RG I apologize for my delay in responding. The "bloody civil war" could have been avoided if the elections had been permitted and the Vietnamese allowed to determine their own fate. It was our support of the illegal gov't in the south that led to the "civil war". Ho, being a nationalist, wanted his country reunited and independent. That sounds very nationalistic to me. No, the north's cause was independence. Perhaps the Vietnamese would have eventually rejected communism, but they were united for the struggle for independence. This united them behind Ho when they may not otherwise have been. We became their common enemy which they perceived as just another colonizing power. Ho's focus was independence. He greatly feared this struggle would be viewed in an East vs West context, and unfortunately he was correct. By getting caught up in this mentality, the US lost a golden opportunity. We were fighting a war against communism, they were fighting a war for independence and an end to foreign domination. As I said, we had no concept of the history and perspective of the people we went to war against. As for the Chinese and soviets, the Vietnamese and Chinese have a long history of animosity. The communists were only too happy to see the US getting itself into a quagmire and would give the Vietnamese all the help they asked for. Apparently we learned nothing from the French, even though DeGaulle warned us. The Geneva accords called for the elections. Also, Vietnamese from all sides were involved in the discussions, including the Viet Minh. www.britannica.com/event/Geneva-Accords The Final Declaration calling for the elections was opposed by the US and South Vietnam, and the US went about establishing a government in the south. The other nations pledged to guarantee the accords but the Final Declaration was left unsigned by all parties because of US and S. Vietnamese opposition. We supported S. Vietnam's refusal to hold nationwide elections. Our fear was that Ho was going to win. Wasn't this the decision of the Vietnamese people? In reference to our Founding Fathers, I meant to point out that leaders of revolutions and independence movements are not necessarily the most saintly persons. One nation's hero is another nation's villain. No, I don't think Ho would have become any Tito. But we certainly accomplished nothing but a lot of senseless death and destruction taking the route we took. In the end, Ho won, posthumously. Diem never agreed to the elections, neither did the US. Diem held a rigged "referendum" in 1955 which put him in power. Diem then needed the US to prop up his gov't, Kennedy eventually offed him, and we proceeded to prop up dictator after dictator in S. Vietnam after that. We were attempting to impose a gov't on a people who didn't want it. When Robert McNamara told a Vietnamese official after that war that the Vietnamese were viewed as "pawns" of the Chinese, it set the official into a rage. Didn't McNamara know their history with the Chinese? That they would be their "pawns" was incredulous to this official. Again, displaying the cold war narrowmindedness by calling Ho a "pawn" of the Chinese and Soviets. Yes, they viewed us as another occupying foreign force, colonizers. Certainly those that wanted us to help them stay in power viewed us more fondly. But when a foreign power comes to your land, establishes bases, props up a gov't, and wages war against the citizens, they may well be viewed as colonizers. In conflict, you call upon those that will help you. That the Vietnamese would switch sides over the course of history is hardly surprising. During WW2 Josef Stalin, a murderous tyrant, was suddenly kindly old Uncle Joe when his ally Hitler turned against him. After the war things old conflicts and animosities resumed. We propped up failed gov't after gov't in the south. Heck, we could have aided the entire country and avoided a senseless and bloody conflict, as well as had influence. By "our" and "we" I mean the government of the country I reside in and my fellow citizens. The people may not have liked Ho, but they were willing to unify around him to resist what they perceived as a foreign invader. I don't know what all the English thought of Churchill. The blitz united people behind him to resist a common enemy. Had we just left well enough alone, perhaps Ho's days in leadership would have been limited. I must admit that I initially believed what my gov't told me back in the mid-60s, and its been my years of research, reading, and listening to different perspectives that brought me to my conclusions. Like any historical event, it will be rehashed, debated, and argued about until the end of time. Thank you for your perspective.

@Cardinal RG Point is if they had the elections and we stayed out of it, their fate would have been up to them. Our interference did nothing to prevent bloodshed, it was a catalyst. Let the Vietnamese decide for themselves. If they had another civil war amongst themselves, that was their problem, not ours. Whatever their history, our interference in supporting an unpopular and corrupt gov't in the south only exacerbated the situation. That gov't could not have stood without our support. It would have toppled, either by elections or conflict. It was the problem of the Vietnamese, not us. Diem for the most part sat out the expulsion of the French. I would agree neither Diem nor Ho were saints, but not two sides of the same coin. www.britannica.com/biography/Ngo-Dinh-Diem LOL. So were the two parts of the United States, north and south. Each had their own president. A civil war resolved that. Yes, they were united, especially in the north. The guerrilla war dragged on and the north held on despite the horrendous bombing. People were united in their effort to expel what they viewed as a common enemy, and endured unimaginable hardships so as to defeat us. That does not mean everyone loved each other. People of opposing ideologies uniting in resistance to an invader has occurred time and again in history. Usually once the invader is defeated, they then turn their guns on each other. Whatever their differences, they still shared a common history and culture. We did not intend to colonize them but that is not how the Vietnamese perceived it. On this we definitely agree, the use of smaller nations in "proxy wars". No, actually Ho did not want the struggle for independence to be viewed as another proxy war. Again the man was no saint, but that doesn't change the fact his only concern was independence for his nation. To see this war as a struggle between east and west was his biggest fear. To say the two Vietnams were independent is like saying the two US's were independent. There were "2" U.S.s, It was a country divided. BTW, old Abe Lincoln was a scoundrel who tolerated no opposition, throwing them in prison or sending them packing. Yet he is viewed as one of our greatest presidents, albeit not by all Americans. We agree on the history of China and Vietnam. The Soviets and Chinese didn't get "bogged" down at all. They only had to send supplies and assistance and the Vietnamese did the rest. They had more damned sense than we did. The Sino Soviet split was a little more complicated and is typical of ideological splits that take place amongst countries. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sino-Soviet_split The real motive for opposing any attempt at elections? www.historycommons.org/context.jsp?item=vietnam_637 The US opposes the unifying elections, fearing a likely victory by Ho Chi Minh, and refuses to sign the Geneva accords. “If the scheduled national elections are held in July 1956, and if the Viet Minh does not prejudice its political prospects, the Viet Minh will almost certainly win, the CIA notes. [KOLKO, 1985, PP. 84] And US President Dwight Eisenhower admits, “I have never talked or corresponded with a person knowledgeable in Indochinese affairs who did not agree that had elections been held as of the time of the fighting, a possible 80 per cent of the population would have voted for the communist Ho Chi Minh as their leader.” [EISENHOWER, 1994, PP. 372] en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pentagon_Papers Keep in mind Diem was "elected" in a rigged election in 1955.
@Mary-qn2jd
@Mary-qn2jd 4 жыл бұрын
@Cardinal RG www.historycommons.org/context.jsp?item=vietnam_637 South Vietnamese President Ngo Dinh Diem, backed by the US, successfully blocks the unifying elections that had been set by the 1954 Geneva Accords, which the US refused to sign (see 1954). It is widely believed that Ho Chi Minh would have easily carried the elections (see 1954). This would have been an unacceptable outcome for the US. [HERRING, 1986, PP. 55] Diem had dictatorial powers and put his family members into positions of power. He "won" in a rigged 1955 election. There's a reason he needed continued propping up from the US. However, China and the Soviets were not committing troops and slowly getting sucked into a quagmire in the north in an effort to prop up a government. They let the US do that. www.britannica.com/biography/Ngo-Dinh-Diem Exactly. What Ho feared came to pass. They would become a proxy war. Whatever internal problems the Vietnamese would have had, it was up to them to settle, however they did so. There was much internal opposition to Diem and his family, with riots and protests, as well as a failing war effort. I suspect JFK played dumb, but knew damned well what was in store for Diem. You're correct, he shed few tears. Instability just intensified in S. Vietnam. It was no paragon of stability when Diem was offed. I'm sure Vietnamese had different opinions on who they wanted to lead them. Point is the south's governments were corrupt and unpopular and only lasted until the next inevitable coup. I don't agree. I think that Vietnamese official viewed his struggle as one for independence, not to do the bidding of the Chinese. Any more than we Americans view our struggle for independence as doing the bidding of the French, who offered their assistance. I have a very low opinion of McNamara. Especially after hearing the accounts of 'McNamara's Morons". He used this blunder as an example of his ignorance of the Vietnamese perspective of the war when discussing his "mistakes" concerning the war, so this blunder to an official is just a display of that ignorance. I disagree. I have been to Vietnam. Their perspective was and is that this was a war of independence, the U.S. just being another foreign invader to be sent packing. Again, a matter of perspective. These were people who had endured years of colonial rule. That they would view us as just another foreign power coming in to colonize them is not surprising. Except the Chinese and Soviets didn't commit combat troops, unlike the U.S. Again, a matter of perspective...the Vietnamese not necessarily sharing yours. Again the Chinese and Soviets did not commit combat troops to prop up a government. They left the fighting to the Vietnamese. Like we left the fighting to the Afghans after the soviet invasion. Of course we were only too happy to supply the Mujahadeen "freedom fighters" with whatever they needed.

The fact that the US STILL went into Afghanistan and Iraq after this really boggles the mind, Did they think the problem wasn't the political realities of guerrilla warfare and the appeal of revolution to colonized, impoverished people but actually simply the fact that it was a jungle? Cause they burned pretty much all of it down with napalm at one point or another.

Vietnam became a French colony in 1877 with the founding of French Indochina, which included Tonkin, Annam, Cochin China and Cambodia. (Laos was added in 1893.) The French lost control of their colony briefly during World War II, when Japanese troops occupied Vietnam.

So many time where vietcong was about to surrender and the us would just holt the attack or bombings. He said, the us wanted to make the war as long as they could, He thought it was all for business or for usa to have a strong military presence in Asia.

@The Outlaw Torn Whether it was " sold" by the left or not, it sold...Parliament was also pressuring King George III during his invasion of America. His own ministers were accusing him of prolonging a fruitless war as documented by historian George Trevelyan. And this was after France signed a treaty of alliance with the Fighting colonies stacking the odds.. Does that take away from the objective of the founding fathers to EXPEL the invader?? Alright then.. Shit happens to the best..Same thing the Vietnamese pounce on when the time was right.. War is not only an extension of politics, both are intertwined. It baffles me when people are obviously subjective to damn near clear evidence of being "out chessed". Starting to sound like a lost cause apologist dude..

The Vietnam War ended, before the Americans arrived, the French were already here, the French imposed slavery on this country, then the Americans. Before the arrival of the Americans, Mr. Ho Chi Minh sent letters to then-US President Harry Truman many times to establish relations, but there was no response, and bad things happened. Vietnamese people never hold enmity with the American people because they are also victims of hawks sitting in the white house. Today the two countries are friends, there was never enmity in our country, many American veterans have returned and lived in Vietnam. Many American businesses have come to do business. We need to do it again to make up for the loss of the past.

Instead, when they made contact, he had his choice of weapons that his troops threw down before running away.
