The biggest problem I run into with most translators is that they translate the literal meaning of each word rather than interpret the intention. There are many misunderstandings and much confusion, because 2 different cultures have broadly different idioms that have A very wide range of actual meanings when used in conversation and so far, none of the translators I've tried are able to help with that. In fact, the only thing that I have found that really helps is to use the translator and then go and ask co. Pilot or ChatGPT what the idiom means. Then I get a paragraph back explaining the meaning of the idiom, so that I can understand. Which is fine with a text conversation? But very cumbersome, if it's in person and time consuming Also, it can create some almost dangerous misunderstandings. When a simple English word means something very meaningful to an English speaking. American but means something completely different to his Chinese girlfriend. Something that would even make her feel that he had minimized her role in his life by using a term like partner instead of lover. Hopefully, we can eventually arrive at a true Babel. Fish type of device that will not only translate word for word the literal cross translation of each word, but be able to interpret they intended meaning and explain it so that the conversation actually flows and grows.
