Years ago some of us wondered why a proven system, that was on most navy ships, couldn’t be used by the army as a point defense system. I guess it just took the army brass a long time to overcome the fact that it came from the navy

@@mr.sharktoothCRAM’s are not just expensive and difficult to manufacture, they are extremely valuable intellectual property. On a ship, it is far more difficult to gain meaningful (espionage) unauthorized access to a CRAM than it is on land. So, the army had to wait. But now, with an elevated risk of a major war with a superpower, the decision has been revised.

GAU-12 (big brother to the GAU-8, of A-10 Thunderbolt fame) is also airborne in the USAF AC-130 Spectre gunship; Unlike the sea-wiz/gee-wiz, the previous Gatling guns are not autonomous, but use automation-assisted targeting... occasionally backed up with a 105mm howitzer, for "punctuation".

CRAM has saved my butt on our FOB a few times during deployment! It was cool to see at night! The Army use to have another Shorad system called the M6 Bradley Linebacker which I was on for a little while. The Army and it’s infinite wisdom thought it wasn’t needed and scrapped it. Now the Army had to jump through hoops and waste more taxpayer dollars to come up with a new weapons system when we already had something to do the job. Good job guys!!

Imagine making it smaller and adapting it to a tank to protect the crew
@danielmocsny5066
@danielmocsny5066 9 ай бұрын
Then the tank would evolve in the direction of the battleship. Battleships used to rule the seas, able to outgun any ship besides a comparable enemy battleship. But over time, battleships became vulnerable to bombs and torpedoes, and they had to keep mounting more and more anti-aircraft guns. They also needed escorting ships such as destroyers to protect them from hostile torpedo boats and submarines. Eventually guided missiles rendered their big guns obsolete, and battleships became too expensive to maintain. The tank is like the battleship of the land - not obsolete yet, but threatened by an array of weapons that are hard to protect against. Tanks are great if your enemy has only rifles and machine guns, and not so great against artillery, anti-tank missiles, and mines. Like the battleship in its waning years, the tank is only useful if you have the other assets necessary to protect it, or you're facing a very poorly equipped enemy.

@@patriot0971Lasers my man. Lasers are the future of defense. Our adversaries have spent decades mass manufacturing and stockpiling rockets, missiles, shells, mortars, and now drones. Even our best systems in the field can be overwhelmed through volume. We cannot produce and restock ballistic based defense systems fast enough to maintain a war with China at the moment. We require a defense system that does not utilize manufactured ammunition. We require a defense system that does not cost so much per shot that our adversaries can exploit it to financially ruin us. A laser based defense system should cost less than 100$ a shot. At that price, we will not be susceptible to that type of economic exploit. And our manufacturing capabilities can be better utilized.

We don't need a Cwiz system on the white house it is guarded well enough and would make it more of a military fort instead of the admin office that it is. A ground vehicle would hold more than 30 seconds of Wupass! However the German Gepard with twin 35mm Cannons is fun to watch too! Too fun! Proximity fused ammo that creates a cloud of really sharp metal in front of a flying target. In an M1-A2 Abrams Tank..the driver has to do not much when the Cannon fires as the drive line talks to the gun and absorbs the recoil. Ergo it can shoot at 45 MPH and 72 tons.

C-RAM is designed to defend from missile attacks coming directly towards the ship. The 20mm gun usually has too short of a range to be of much use in a land-based setting. This was the problem with the Vietnam-era M-167 Vulcan Air Defense System. I would love to see a C-RAM type system paired with a Bushmaster gun in the 30-40mm range.

Wow! Our Military can defend itself from hypersonic missiles during terminal stage of flight.Amazing! The analogy is like an outfielder calling I GOT IT, and runs to catch the downward ball. Hypersonic missiles slows down when barring down its target to prevent it to over shoot its destination and during the terminal stage the missile can't maneuver as the distance from its target is the prime objective. The the ball is first hi, it travels very fast and the predictability is not certain as baseballs are known to curve changing direction but it eventually arch downwards going straight to the ground. The ball loses energy coming down and isn't capable to curve. Same physics and principles with hypersonic missiles. Fast flight that can be hard to predict, can move about and finally coming down it's easy to detect and intercept.

Both "not invented here" and "no perceived need" is very Army. Plus the Navy version is built for sea conditions, heavier and dependent on ship crew and probably at least some sensor feed. Truck mounting and support with power and sensors, probably needed in at least pairs to cope with many incoming drones. The ammunition goes quick. I do not know the allocation of shots to assumed distraction of drones. Ships I would think have multiple systems protecting a small area. Protecting Infantry lines and support is moredifficult, line of sight matters.

Why not on a tank body better to get around on like The M60 bodies we probably already have just put new everything in it to modernize it or even on the heaviest M1 Abrams tank bodies to protect it crews from incoming rounds I don't believe that truck is going to protect the crew during it's operation

For some reason this brings to mind “Forbidden Planet”, Robbie the Robot and the monster from the id as it attacks the relief saucer. This is just what they needed for point defence.

I have known the testing of this Land-Based Phalanx for over ten years. It must have been a failure to see that it has not been put into practical use yet.

this ciws so called phaland system works fine on software and as last defense is still very efective clean option and go air traffis excpet good call is upgrade is about 3km range and force 2,5 x more is good above 24 measure strenght is basic level off defense for boat od destrozers or corvette exept bigger ship has like 5 it works slight better then missile defense in intercept besti in use for turn and extra defense other in zone as ship tactical defense surface area and best capabilities are in turn fly which airplane do again to be efective so longer range kind tops peek and zou can forget easy down peek turn and attack as it pushes airplane go high up and even a simple rocket sistem could also do the rest but charging time is problem in big attack so phaland is has bigest is very efective in turn and has certian sound off spin very noticable when airplanes try to attack you just flair them and they avoid so flares flash is also big key defense and destroyers or corvette should have this more flares pack inside since flares are optional use for rocket attacks the bigest range results ae usualy in some mid dsitance between 4 - 6 km after ships hold in line off fire or more in closer range results are to fast often very short time ot react and dangerous outcome as modern ships are to fast and go easy even to close if you do not have enough torpedo power you are cooked also if previous patriot goals are good strength iike 15000 2x more power then standard and longe range the chinese option are counterfited with strength off 25000 or even 30000 which is more strght and goals are simply imporved towards better or more usable teh same thing hapend in torpedo strength which chinse boat have like advantage so in theory chinse boat or even smalled boats ccan easy to task role but have some problems in more combat offense or everything alone and espacialy enoying are submairines with bigger msisile which stand on path and require time to be heated hard and chinse ships soem problems with submarines and lack off potent strength in use in fast deploy numbers off torpedoes but they are powerfull and in manwhile submairnes does that also so chinese boats and destroyers or corvette have some like desired lvl off range use do not cross to much or efectivness drop althow in some action do perform and do earn money well in lets say 2/3 done which is excellent result and no so not money giving away in navy budget back as fpr caracterisicsd off ships chinese ships are on theory fast turnable and sometimes takre time to be fast but usualy faster then us which many times work against then selves not mcuh chance to go fast on positon simply do task role and shwo presence positioning rest do rockets and torpedoes and flars which have more and more modern use and can even easy spark boost defense while do defense and slow down attack and push force to main goals hoever somewhat expoased came aircarier on longer range then 6 - 8 km which absolutelz head no chance and also very favourable is helicopte us eon destroyers as use of airship missile which in closer just help or even sunk but that is like double cargo missile box 4x2 and in close combat kind work then us versions off tools as for helicopter integration in use off combat is proven waste off time but that software use in game simulation and sometimes goes ower a real defense power boat and that to easy a specialy a slight problem are heavy rockets like cj 3 or us big rockekts for large submarines nto recomendable for use as it can cause floods prep weather stage or even typhon showere as terms off efectivness as big powder strength sometimes they can only tease or cause porblems on line stand as subs not so efective as nto so much various weapons for use and if hit on strong defense air a boat or destroyers it evapourate fast and easy and subs lose power and if they head strong torpedoes they are not fast and if spoted to late can do evasive or prevent follow and atack down boats oponents or enemy

Shows how slow the Army is with Force Protection. Systems for upgrade have been available for years, but US ARMY GENERALs are absolute ID 10 T parts. I have been working in logistics since 1990 with both getting new systems into the military system and then the subsequent fielding programs. Once you see how 'sloth-like' getting advanced or replacement systems, you would fire a lot of people. Because of the incompetence of our logistics procurement system, when we go to war - BE READY FOR BODY BAGS TO BE COMING HOME. Behind the Genius Idea is totally laughable!!!

Do not waste your money and time unless you develop this weapon to shot gun style or spray style. Current style is not effective and you can never shoot down even one single object.
