I think most people in Indonesia would not mind the tax increase, if it is being used properly for government expenditure, such as social services and public infrastructure. The problem is that corruption is so rampant in Indonesia, people are upset when their hard-earned money is just going to the pockets of corrupt officials who enriches themselves or just paying their debts to their financial backers. Granted we have experienced major economic growth in the last decade, but corruption is still a problem and the previous government didn't do much to tackle this (just focusing on the economic & infrastructure development).

All countries have corruption. It's too wide / vague of a term. Korea while corrupt during their industrial period generally funneled money towards infrastructure and growth which laid the groundwork for their success. Only now is it a hindrance since a few companies monopolize the market. And, it's debatable if it's a pure negative.

This video explains in detail why in terms of macroeconomics, the tax hike makes sense and it should then be supported. But it's very obvious the creators don't know the actual reason behind so much backlash in Indonesia against the tax hike, and it's a very simple reason. Say it with me: *THE INDONESIAN GOVERNMENT OFFICIALS ARE CORRUPT.* There. In Indonesia you pay your taxes, but if you get a heart attack or get hospitalized for a severe illness, your bank account gets drained it's so expensive. That is if you can even afford to pay in the first place. You go out in many Indonesian cities, you see potholes and nonexistent pedestrian facilities and trash. If you want to send your kids to a decent school, that's going to drain your bank account as well. Your house got robbed? Good luck going to the police, that's not gonna solve anything and they might even rob you nearly as much as the thieves did. Unless of course you have connections, or your case goes viral online. Social security? Senior years savings and good guaranteed pensions? Don't make Indonesians laugh. *At the same time*, they see their high ranking government officials, police officers, and tax department ranking officers having obscene amounts of money, luxury cars, luxury watches, and frequent trips to luxury international destinations. Some time ago, there was this viral case in Indonesia of a teenage son of a tax department official beating up another kid viciously, stomping on his head and everything, while taunting him and posting it online over some stupid teenage lover s**t. He ended up arrested, his dad attempted to help him but also got pulled into the s**tstorm because the case was so viral. He ended up getting investigated and turned out his wealth was over 56 billion rupiahs. The average monthly salary in Indonesia is 5-7 million rupiahs. And this is not a super high ranking official, too. God knows how much the real big fishes have. Indonesians do not trust their government. This is why the backlash. The corruption is systemic. It's a government culture. So many Indonesians feel as if they have to cough up more and more of their hard-earned money to enrich some tax official instead of actually helping the nation. Would you want to happily pay your increased tax in this situation? Comparing Indonesia to a UK or an OECD country is naivete at best, and laughably duplicitous at worst.

Indonesian living in Canada here, it baffles me that Indonesia's 12% VAT almost went toe to toe with Ontario's 13% HST. I think there's so much they can do on government efficiency before the tax increase. This feels like a shortcut with no point of return (no records on tax cut because of better economy) and by the end of the day end consumers are the one who pay the price for the mess caused by the ruling power. Emphasis should be put on the practice of good governance and law enforcement first because public trust has been a problem for years due to the corrupt government.

To be honest the current situation of Indonesia is worse than it was mentioned in the video, I will be showing you from the POV of the middle classes if you take the POV of lower classes you may get to pay just the VAT or even sometimes none since they will be spending on informal business sector. In 2024, Indonesian customers have to pay a VAT of 11 % PLUS an additional of ~6-8% to Service tax (charged by businesses) So imagine for every economic transaction, Indonesians have to pay the same amount of tax as UK and getting much lesser benefits. So in reality adding another 1% to VAT puts a larger strain on the customers than it's actually highlighted.

While our cost of living like gas, foods , clothes , tax , increased by more than 10-20% the past few years from 2018 . Raising VAT taxes while a vast number of middle class people are still bitterly struggles to fullfill their daily needs and basic salaries still badly stagnated for this last 5 years is not just a total injustices but also eroding the existences of middle class Indonesian that become the ones that carry most of the tax burdens. I'm afraid that sooner or later most Indonesians would grab their pitchfork and start to eat the rich since the unaffected ones would most likely the richest class of the society and corporates that already start to hike the basic sale prices of some of their products quoting the raise of VAT as their main reasons. Worsening the already bad economic slowdown that being felt by most Indonesians.
@faridmarzuq987 күн бұрын
The thing is, VAT increase is not just reflected in the final product price but also will affect the whole component in the process. Let say you own a bakery. Want to buy flour to produce bread? 12% VAT. Want to buy a jam? 12% VAT. Need a new oven? BAM 12% VAT. Sorry, you need a gas to bake, don't forget to pay 12% VAT. And of course, you need electricity, we don't live in the Flintstone era, go add 12% VAT. Etc, etc. Imagine how much the price will rise just to have the same amount of profit just for one bread. And remember, you'll use your same profit to pay daily expenses THAT WILL INCREASE. So you need to increase your profit margin just to make a living. So, how much is your bread price now?

Look, Indonesia's Economic Development Level (EDL) is lower compared to OECD countries, which generally has a higher GDP per capita and a more robust tax system than Indonesia. The problem isn't the magic 12%, it's the fact that the income distribution and GDP per capita in Indonesia is still under developed, and as mentioned in the beginning, YES it will have a major impact on middle to lower income households, because those 12% will eventually add up.

Although we have low VAT to gdp ratio, but the goods being sold here already pricier than other countries. This is because most of goods that sold are imported from a countries with already higher VAT. So rising the VAT is not a solution. The govt should be focusing on improving our manufacturing competitiveness so that Indonesia would not relying more on importer goods, and able to produce better and cheaper products. FYI, do you know that “Tempe” as one of our main food, the beans are imported from US? Printing Batik mostly are importer from China/ India because its is cheaper produced and imported there. 9:20 Why Indonesia's VAT to GDP ratio is so low ? (only 3.4%) 1. *0% VAT / PPN* applied to several exported mineral groups (such as coal, nickel, etc.) meanwhile these commodities have the largest contributor to Indonesia's export value. This means that the low VAT to GDP ratio is because Indonesia is not pro-people, but pro-elite and mining oligarch - clearly seen from the very low tax contributions from mining companies. 2. Less transparency towards gov n taxpayers + so many loopholes for tax revenue leakage + corruption by authorized officials at the Ministry of Finance. (IMHO)

The government puts so much effort into convincing the people, but if it truly prioritizes justice, why not raise taxes on luxury goods or increase income taxes for the wealthy? This stands in stark contrast to the repeated tax amnesties in Indonesia. Moreover, the credibility of state institutions like the KPK, police, DPR, and the tax department remains very low. Also, you failed to mention that Indonesia has one of the lowest minimum wage in SEA. i mean if you want to compare Indonesia to other countries the way you did, you need to mention the minimum wage situation as well. Also, "luxury tax" is pure bullshit to make it sound better than it is. They also tax soap, detergent, online delivery, online payment service. And also, considering theres a supply chain, a 1% increase can lead to 9-10% down the line at the end of product. You see, its more than just 1% of increase.
