Pt. Satyasheel Deshpande, Hindustani Classical Vocalist and Bhimsen Joshi Chair Professor, Pune University, presents a demonstrative performance to show how the creative potential inherent in the Khayāl form leads to its stunning diversity of musical expression. This paper was presented as part of a seminar entitled ‘Creativity and the Khayal’ that was held on 19th August 2019 on the occasion of the launch of the Manipal-Samvaad Centre for Indian Music.
The Centre is housed in the premises of the Manipal Centre for the Humanities and has been created in collaboration with Samvaad Foundation, Mumbai. We hope to bring into Manipal’s fertile academic atmosphere Samvaad Foundation’s rich archival collection of Hindustani music and to thereby create a hub for high quality scholarship, research and dissemination in the field of traditional Indian music.
