Good video, thanks for putting this together. Only wish you included a part where you compare the two mics back to back without interruption. Simple text over the screen or just showing a pic of the mic would be enough without having to announce each transition.

Cheers for the video. It helped me choose the Behringer. I bought one last week. Quick tip: Behringer seems to have fixed the mic holder issue in the years since. My mic fits pretty firmly in the clip. Cheers again.

Looks like the Behringer ships with the mic clip attached to the mic. I bet if you leave the clip off for a few days, it will close back up to its original diameter and hold the mic as good as the Sennheiser clip.

@@chrisbalding3128 FYI. The Behrigner mics I've purchased all come with the clip separate in the case. In fact the ISK mics I bought also come with a clips separate.

@Steve Ledger Yeah, I have a few XM8500 mics and the clip was separate. It just looked like the clip was attached, when Shane took it out of the box. Maybe he had been messin’ around with it before the “unboxing”.

The Sennheiser had so much more going on, and in repeat listenings, the difference became easier to differentiate...that being said, the Behringer still sounded really good. I wouldn't have an issue recording with either one.

You can always wrap a little gaff tape around the shaft of the Behringer mic so that it sits better in the mic clip. It’s a $57 mic. You’re not going to care if you put a little tape around it.

Sennheiser sounds wider, bigger, more equal frequency spread. The sennheiser has more grunt. The behringer is "stuck" in an odd spot in the midrange. It lacks character in both low and hi end with the boxy midrange being weirdly harsh.
@jts3339
@jts3339 4 жыл бұрын
Phil Hovey: In isolation you may be able to discern the subtleties between the Sennheiser and Behringer, but it gets lost in the mix, where it really counts. Until I have unlimited funds, I’m content with what the Behringer delivers and I’ve never received a comment that my music doesn’t “sparkle” because my Behringer gear isn’t delivering, except for the additional money that it leaves in my bank account.
@PhenixDj
@PhenixDj 4 жыл бұрын
@@jts3339 True, although the differences here are pretty big i think, if you know how to record and mix, you can go a loooong way with dirt cheap microphones and if you never mentioned anything 99.9% of the people that listen your stuff recorded on cheap mics, wouldn't even get the idea to think that they sound bad. Of course a EQ cannot fully change the character of a mic, as theres different relations between on-off axis sound, difference in impulse response and such, but if you'd EQ the behringer right, it would be really really hard to tell a difference, even in an isolated example.

I wish people would try speaking and singing into these "instrument" mics. Some of them have really good frequency responses that should work just fine for voice. After all, if people stuck to the rule that because something is labeled as an instrument mic, it shouldn't be used as vocals, we wouldn't know how great the SM57 is for those tasks.

Wow... looking forward to the '57 comparo now @intheblues, but checking with my normal online stores, the B906 is sub $100 AUD! I could probably buy both Behringer units (906 & 75) for the same as either the Shure or the Sennheiser... both of which I've owned but were nicked after a gig (makes it just that little more annoying shelling out $400 AUD a second time). I don't supposed you've considered trying out the *very* inexpensive Thomann Ribbon mics Shane? What a cost-effective combination they'd be with these Behringer dynamics... if they're OK.

I bought 3 unused B906 second hand to record the amps in the practice room and I´m absolutely happy with results. I´m not sure anymore, but I think I payed 25€ or 30€ each... for this price it was a steal... Well, we record all band rehearsals with "cheap" microphones on 16 tracks... and it sounds pretty good. Yes, we used smart phones to record stuff, but it sounds like garbage... Back in the day we used to record on a cassette recorder... now there is so much nice and inexpensive gear these days :)

I spoke to an engineer from Sennheiser not long after the e906 came out. It seems that some of them were guitar players and knew exactly what a mic in front of an amp should sound like when they designed it. I've been using one live in front of numerous amps for years with great results and they take a lot of punishment. The Behringer is a nod to the e906, but I don't think it would last long on the road, or with high SPL pounding its capsule for long. Top review Shane.

@@kracked7637 Thank You. I actually found out many things myself already but i really appreciate your answer. There are already quite good simulation plugins that sound really good but micing the amp still seems to be the best choice, apparently even multiple speakers with 2 or more different mics and blended with a mixer. It also seems to be a thing that some people want to use the feedback of the strings that resonate with the soundwaves that are generated by the speaker.

The e906 ibeing a guitar mic is just marketing talk, its a modern version of the classic gold face MD409/509, a mic that was originally designed for brass & percussion, but happens to be excellent for guitar, and has become a standard for that. I have a 509 & e906, I've compared them & there is a slight difference. in the low mids listening on headphones in solo, but in a mix I cant hear a difference, I prefer the e906 to my Royer 121 & AEA R92. The e906 is excellent on brass, percussion & toms. The thing with the e906 is the EQ symbols are wrong if you read the manual: The ROLLOFF setting is flat EQ, this is the 409 setting, FLAT symbol is 6db boost at 4.2k, BOOST IS 9dB boost at 4.2k. THe 2 boost settings emulate the e609 & e 606, why you would buy a more expensive mic to get a cheaper mic sound makes no sense.

For those of us that just want something better than our cellphone mic for making fun jam vids, I didn't hear anything from the Behringer that would make me want to spend 4x more on the mic its trying to mimic. Half the struggle for me is mic placement and mixing, perfect for a beginner like myself. Behringer has been around a long time and usually makes decent products with cheap housings and enclosures, you could do a lot worse

I'm thinking the mic clip may just be slightly deformed and could be heated and sized down to make it tighter. I may just be in defense mode since I'm pretty much of a Behringer fan-boy, but I've had AKG mic clips that seemed a little 'limp' and I did a heat-gun and squeeze on them to correct. Nice demo and review as well as the playing.

The Sennheiser is a great mic, but replacing the clip with a Beyer MKV9 was the best move I made. The clip is way too tight IMO. Sounds like the Behringer came with the wrong size clip? Behringer typically uses ABS plastic, which is the same material used on automobile bumpers. ABS is notoriously durable, and doesn’t dent or chip like metal, so the plastic vs. metal argument argument shouldn’t determine whether to purchase a Behringer. I’ve never had a Behringer effect or microphone crack, chip, or break.

A note here!! If a guitarist works to get a great tone onstage through his amp, That's the sound he wants out front also. If you use filters to boost the highend,etc, you're changing that stage tone he wanted to transfer through the pa. (Recording studio cases are different) You need a neutral mic, that's what makes the 57 the absolute most used guitar amp Mic in history. It delivers what your amp is giving you, not extended treble or else? It has no controls of any kind, just does its job, takes a beating and keeps working. My favorite live guitar Mic was the 409, which like the 57 had no eq options. Its a real shame that the 409 was discontinued, the 906 will work well, but its no 409. The 409 worked well as a vocal mic( check out early Pink Floyd or the Midnight Special performance by the Doobie Brothers) but the 906 sucks on vocals. The very existence of a Behringer 57 clone is proof in itself that the 57 is the go to Mic for guitar amps live. And its $89.!!!! The greatest guitarists in the world have used the 57. Then people say, the 906 is awesome in the studio. Yes in a small home studio or a budget studio they are good and inexpensive, but I have yet to see one used in the studios I frequent, as every one of them will go for more high end mics to do that, like expensive ribbons. But in those same commercial studios you Will see the 57, many times in conjunction with a large condenser or ribbon mic. An example, Heritage Sound, a commercial studio and sound co, uses the 906 at most live shows, but never in their studio(he says its good and incredibly convenient without a stand).(his Mic locker makes me wanna cry) he has a myriad of awesome mics to choose from, including many old mics( u87,47,251,etc). But once again I've seen him use the 57 In the studio. When it comes to the 906, the biggest reason for its popularity is the fact that it "almost" brought back the sound of the 409, and that sound was the sound of live guitar amps from the 60s and 70s. Just not quite......

I don't know if someone asked that but appart from a personnal preference for one or the other, how do you rekon each one is compared to what you hear with your own ears. Because at the end that's the point for the mic for me : get the sound closer to what I can hear with my own ears. Because if I find a tone that I like, I want it to be captured as close as possible to my own hearing. Appart from that, I'd love a comparison between this Behringer B906 and the Shure SM57. I saw only one video with this comparison but the sound was captured at the same time so the position is not exactly the same for both mics and it influences the sound obviously so the comparison is not perfect.

Thanks for the great Vid. As it seems, not all B906 are the same. On my B906 the toggle switch slides smooth and is easy to handle. even single handed..flip it with one side of your thumbnail and you'll be fine. My mic clamp is not so bad as yours. I can swirl my mic around, just like seen in the video and it stays in position.. Maybe it is an option for one interested in buying a B906, to order more than one piece and give them a personal shoot out. btw. my mic does not sound so bluesy than the mic in the vid, so there may be tolerances even in the frequency response. I like my B906 best in front of a Laney IRT112 Cab.

What I noticed is that mine rattles when shaken, as if the switch on the back is loose somehow. Just wondering if anyone has the same issue/experience? And if you think that would affect the sound?

Hey, just bought this mic, connected it to a xlr cable and that to a jack 3.5mm to my Mac. But when I open garage band and want to use it as a mic, it acts as a speaker and not as a mic, how do I fix that? Thanks

Probably won't have nice results. Check podcastage's review on e906 to get more info but this microphone wouldn't be a go-to from vocals

Can anyone tell me, would i be correct in assuming that the slight difference in sound could be adjusted for with parametric eq in post?

Yes. You could quite easily get them sounding the same with a little tweaking. That said, the mic sounds great and is very usable.

Fantastic vid ! They sound so close that mic position, guitar choice (read any instrument or drum) and amp eq / speaker will have profoundly more real world influence on perceived outcome. Dodgey clip....not an issue....go old skool and wrap some tape round barrel. Splendid stuff, guv'nor. 😊♥️😊

The B906 would be great for recording early hard rock/metal/ 80's shred. Sold. There's something going on there that I like, 70's early era AC/DC vibey mids punching out. Woo indeed. It's a Long Way to the Top (If You Wanna Rock 'N' Roll) yeah baby. (and no, I'm not going to spend 10k on a Neumann U 67 mic or drop 4k on a Universal Audio 1176LN Limiting Amplifier either just so you know ;) $95 for the B906 through the behringer 1202 pa mixer to smooth it out, sounds like a bloody good combo to me 🍻 Steppen wolf born to be wild...

You can’t beat the b906 for that price. It’s a good enough mic for 99.99% of mortals. I do like it more about 1 1/2 inches away from the grill cloth, it clears up a ton. Most of the demos have it right against the amp, not the best sound imho.

In direct comparison the Sennheiser sounds better in my ear. Especially in flat it sounded more open. But then - in an live environment you likely wouldn't hear the difference.

I feel like the difference is just what you prefer. Both are competent it seems, but depending on what you want to record and how much you want to process it after one mic is preferred. I will buy both this and the SM57 clone to I think. Just because why not?

The Behringer works fine, but for rock, metal and country music, the Sennheiser has the transparent mids that are necessary that cut through. I love my KAM RT1 for guitar, it is a small American brand, you may want to check out.

Ironically the demo when comparing the sounds is similar to a stock Peavey speaker vs a Celestion.

As usual Shane " cuts to the chase" no BS, no cutie pie American review or Sir Chatalot English review and of course Canadians and Kiwis can't read. The difference in price here in the colonies between the 906 and B906 is $160.00 dollars. To my ear the Sen sounds better but to my wallet the Behringer does. Does the Sen sound 160 better? NO. I really don't understand why people hate Behringer so much. I mean I hate the Chinese and we're probably 10 years away from WW III with those shitebirds but hey until then I'd go with the B906. Shane reviews Behringer stuff all the time and I bought a Composer based on one of his reviews. Not disappointed at all. If you're into Hood Ornaments opt for the Nazi's if you just want good functional gear and enough left over for food give Xi ping pong a gobble goop stuff a go . ...at least until the bombs start falling.
