I tried this as well, and I appreciate the tip. While many of the solder joints were pretty terrible on the PCB it didn't make any difference to the overall volume level. It just looks like this should have a gain (+10db, +20db and +30db) adjuster like so many other devices in the Windows sound settings. I plugged it into a mac as well and with full input gain it was still a very low signal at 8" from the mic. You basically have to put your face against the screen to get any real level out of it. It might be fine for high input like singing, but for standard voice communications it's not useful.

I've tried this on my newly purchased c1u. Because of the low volume issue I used to boost the volume around %400 with software. And after following the instructions about cleaning the pcb (I havent done the resoldering bit) I don't need a software boost and now %100 regular volume is louder than the previously %400 boosted one. I bought this microphone in 2014 and it was low volume from the get go. At the time I tried all software related stuff, boosting, volume etc. And lol @ the phantom power thing to get blue light, it really was a myth back then. Maybe a couple years ago I saw this video and tried cleaning it with isopropyl alcohol, but no difference. Today I gathered some courage and decided to replace all 10 capacitors, including the big 470uF ones, and also remade all solder contacts. Still nothing, volume is still low as always. Anyway, I appreciate the tip, it seems to have helped a lot of people.

This actually worked for me, but mine had a humming noise. After cleaning and soldering, the humming sound disappeared for me. But remember that you need to put all the pieces together for testing. Days ago I got a C-1U mic I noticed that it had little volume, I disassembled it and found 2 electrolytic capacitors of 470 microfarads x 10 volt that were out of stock. I replaced them and increased the volume noticeably. I hope the data will serve you.
@PossumTV
@PossumTV 2 жыл бұрын
Possum TV 0 seconds ago Thank you! I bought one of these years ago and I had always though the problem was a defective driver. There was not much corrosion in mine but the resistors were virtually bare of solder and resoldering them made a big difference to the volume. After doing this here was still some hum and I noticed the capacitor and the transistor hiding behind it were also bare of solder. You have to remove the screws holding down the PCB and also the screws attaching the front part of the microphone to access the transistor, but I did this and resoldered them and the hum went away. I also cleaned the PCB in this area with IPA so I can't be certain whether the cleaning or the soldering did the trick. BTW the transistor is a 2SK596S JFET and is probably somewhat static sensitive, so it's best to take anti-static precautions when working near it.

Assuming the C-1U uses the same capsule as the C-1, it does matter which direction you speak into the capsule. The LED should face you when speaking. The capsule has a cardioid pickup pattern so it is less sensitive to sound from the back, as well as having a different frequency response. Just try rotating the mic 180 degrees while speaking into it; you should hear the difference in sound.

I've been dealing with this microphone buzzing on me for the longest time, I had to constantly squeeze the mesh grill at the top to temporarily stop it but it would always come back. I did the same steps as this video, only I was unable to solder or anything I simply just used an alcohol wipe to clean up the white oxydization all over the board and the buzzing has stopped entirely. Thanks for this video, helped out a ton. :)

Thanks for the video and I'm sure you're right: the workmanship doesn't look great. Unfortunately I haven't managed to bring about much improvement, if any. However, I never was the world's greatest with a soldering iron and I can't get on with this modern, lead-free solder, which I can never get to flow. I went further than you and took off the cover to expose the actual microphone: the connection to the central post looked bone dry but I couldn't make it much better. Thanks anyway.

Great post, it solved the problem for me. Special thanks for showing the dissasembling; if you do not have needle-point pliers, you may use an U-shaped piece of wire to remove the inner ring at the bottom. In my mike, there was a resinous layer over some areas of the PCB. Wiping it out with isopropyl alcohol and drying with a clean Q-tip produced a fully working microphone in a few minutes; MAGIC! I believe that some parts of the circuit, those directly connected and close to the capture disk, are of very high impedance and need an excellent insulation to work well. In fact, in my mike there was a capacitor in that area connected through the PCB via a small Teflon ring, which suggests that the extra insulation must be needed. Any dirt or deposit in that area should hurt a lot in sound volume and quality. Should not be as important in other parts of the PCB, for instance in the USB connector, but a good cleanup is always a good idea. I believe that this was a "protective coating" that went south for Behringer, usually a maker of good audio products.

Just disassembled mine and it has equally bad soldering. Non-existent on one side of the board in a couple of cases. Additionally, it looks like the pins of a capacitor are shorted by a splash of solder. I was led to believe this brand was reasonably good, but the quality of this device is shocking. Update: I improved the soldering and removed the short, but it didn't make any difference. I have ended up using some microphone boost software (Equalizer APO).

I touched the iron to each join for 10 seconds to re-flow them all (without adding any more lead though). At the very least, I didn't make anything worse... But I don't think it helped anything in my case. I still can't even get clipping when I shout. For now I'm good with normalization-boosting, but I have a new USB-B cable coming in soon and we'll see what that does- If I don't comment again, it will only mean status quo still. While not exactly crappy and still better at capturing low/high freq than the other options out there, in the end it REALLY is a budget-type Behringer product with this infuriating low volume quirk.

My question is: What gain do you have to have to have it recording your voice loud enough without catching too much noise. (BTW, the PCB on mine do not use the big solder friendly condensers and resistors and the solder is still not perfect)

Then open it up and if it needs attention. I'll give it some. Then run it again. See if it was worth the effort. It doesn't take much more than a cold solder joint to f things up. I have the Behringer C-1, but is not the USB one. It´s a XLR, and the volume is extremaly low. Would your solution work in this case?
@Storm_.
@Storm_. 4 жыл бұрын
I honestly never owned one but it is definitely possible if it was made in the same factory.

Hello, I have the same microphone and the other day I connected it and it doesn't work. The led light comes on and the computer detects it well, but it doesn't work. What can be? I have written to Behringuer but they do not reply. Thank you
@Storm_.
@Storm_. 4 жыл бұрын
Well firstly it could be software, so try it in another computer if possible and check all the obvious things like mute and levels etc. If it's not software and turns out to be hardware you'll have to open it up and check the components. If you don't have much knowledge at least follow some tips in the video and reflow some solder and clean off any oxidisation, if it still doesn't work after that then I suggest getting a different mic or return it to where you bought it from. But yes remember Occam's razor, it's usually the most obvious thing, ie software.

@@Storm_. Okay. Thank you very much for answering. I work with Mac and I have always used it there, I have tried it on 4 different macs and none appear. The system recognizes it but there is no movement. I use Adobe Audition and the microphone appears all normal but when I speak it doesn't draw a wave ... I don't know what to do anymore :-(

Hello, do you mean light on mic or audio interface? My audio interface cant show any lights even when signal is passing through untill i push the gain all the way up, which makes noise. I have Behringer UMC404HD and C1 mic

Thanks I'll give it a try! :) However I do have another problem where the metal mesh head "broke off" and when the microphone doesn't have the head on it makes it unbelievable horrible to listen to. Don't you know by chance if there are some ground points? I'm not sure about my theory
@Storm_.
@Storm_. 4 жыл бұрын
No the mesh head doesn't have any grounding, it just provides some natural noise dampening, so it would sound horrible without it. I think from memory there is some foam in there too.
@adfjasjhf
@adfjasjhf 4 жыл бұрын
@@Storm_. The foam doesn't do anything, it's the mesh that makes the quality to go 100x better I've done some tests where I slowly brought the mesh close to the actual microphone and the sound was fixed, however oddly enough when I turned the mesh 180° it was the same as without it which makes me believe there is some strange ground connection
