I took the two newest and most interesting little synths I could find and compared them in my first video from the Thomann Synth Reactor. Behringer Crave analog monosynth and the Arturia digital Hybrid - which one floats your boat? And yes I did muck up the attempt to sequence the Crave from the Microfreak via CV - i didn't connect the gate!
#TSR19 - Thomann took a bunch of KZbinrs to their shop and told us to go play and make videos. So we did. This is straight to camera, one take, off-the-cuff, honest and fabulous. Thanks to Thomann for the opportunity and thanks to Behringer and Arturia for the loan of the gear (that I then had to give back). Search for #TSR19 for more fantastic videos from fabulous synthesizer KZbinrs.

Thanks for putting these two together. Liked what you got with the LFO modulating the cycling envelope. Micro Freak audio palette seems to head in a different direction from Crave, which seems to make it a good complement. A little MIDI clock from one to the other for timing and the internal sequence on each should play nice. Thanks!

Motorized knobs... They would work but that would be an expensive component to replace. Different companies have done things that work well - anything with LE Ds around the knobs to show position work. The Microkorg XL has an LED light up when the original value is reached. The Crave is nice and would be a good get if you want to get started in (semi) modular, also it would make a good expansion to an existing modular or semi-modular rig. The MicroFreak bundles up some interesting ideas, but it is fiddly in the tradition of 1990's-vintage digital synths.

Robin, I know this one's from a while ago, but it was a fun watch. I have had a MicroFreak for 3 or 4 months, and came across this video because I've been absorbing all sorts of info about the Crave, which I'm awaiting. I really like the MicroFreak. On the synth side, the sheer variety of sounds it can make is fantastic. The option of mono or 4-voice poly is amazing at the price point. The strange rhythmic things possible with Swing, Slice, and Dice are rewarding. On the MIDI controller side, it's like a 25-key capacitive version of the Keystep, and I use it a lot that way to control other gear. I bought the Crave mainly to get a bunch of patchable outputs to plug into my Neutron. The combo is sort of "poor man's Eurorack", but I'm excited to set up dual-oscillator FM, modulating the Neutron's oscillators with its own LFO at high rate, then borrow the Crave's oscillator and LFO to modulate filter and other bits on the Neutron. That's just the first idea. 😃 At any rate, thanks for the bit on assigning a control in the MicroFreak's mod matrix - I hadn't figured that out yet!

Also, on some synths like the Korg Radias, there is an indicator light. When you select a preset you can manually adjust the knobs untill the light comes on which indicates you've moved the knob to the original position of the preset. Time consuming, sure but quite effective. Also, synths like the Nord Lead 3 and the Moog Little/Slim phatty use LED indicators which is even better because most things can be seen where they are set for the preset straight away despite the actual knob position. Last, some synths have a passthrough feature where when you adjust a parameter no change is heard until you go past the presets position, giving you an audio queue when you're in the ball park. Motorized knobs would be pretty sweet! Even if one of the companies put there tried it damn the price and see how well it does. Would be interesting.

I understand motorized knobs are far to expensive, but here's a solution, maybe: the synth remembers the values of the knobs (digitally) and presents them in a little screen, so when you recall your preset it shows the values of the knobs (maybe five at a time, with a scroll knob), so can reset it manually. A bluetooth connection may make it possible to show you your panel in an app on your mobile device, with all the values.

i can't believe some one said it. yeah the filters and lfo's oscillators are all over synths. it would be nice to get some different functions in them like decimators, looper fx, amp simulators, sequencers, simple edit functions instead of cut of and resonance all the time. we can all go through an external device that can filter and lfo etc. lets get into the future with these things and get away from the 80s pads, and squelchy fart filter noises all the time. this constant re hash of synth like the tb and tr series from roland. the yamaha reface and all the 808, 707, 909 stuff is getting frustrating. every time i look for a new bit of gear it sounds the same. i recently looked at electron and i swear its a vamped up volca in an electron box. the only pice of kit ive had real satisfaction out of recently is the korg emx just because it sounds a bit more alien and you really have to work at it to get a flat sound but its still so cheap and nasty sound having said that. i cant really afford high, high end stuff but i have had plenty of hands on in studios etc and yh you get a little more kick for your money but thats to be expected. its almost like manufacturers know we (me) little people will be quite satisfied with the little we get... nah not me but then again i am not from this planet but will stick around for the fun of it. wibble wibble

Microfreak seems interesting but the first thing that immediately puts me off personally is that the Crave uses Curtis chips & the Arturia has an Obie SEM filter. They get everywhere & I have more than enough of both. Of course there will be plenty of buyers who need them, but I wish more synth designers would make new original designs. Jury still out!

Every time I hear the MicroFreak I can’t help but think it should sound better. The feature set (especially for the price) is one of the best in many years, but I have iPad apps that sound much better. My Blofeld can do everything it can and more, and sound better in the process. Sucks because I want to love it support the originality, but the Crave sounds much better here.

I've had the Crave for a bit, but found it to be pretty tinny. And the sound looses much depth at higher resonance. It's still and awesome beginners synth imo, because it's so cheap. I've sold it for a Neutron. That's a massive machine, but still not for me. I now own a Drefadbox Erebus v3, which sounds amazing. And I'm soon getting a Microfreak, for some crazy poly action.

I'll be getting the Crave, was still reluctant about getting the MicroFreak as well, but this video convinced me not to... Even if the price was the other way around, I'd still go for the crave. Bout to send back the Roland Gaiaiaia (sic?) that I ordered, because I, my GF, and my lone remaining bandmate were standing by while I did the unboxing then setting up then playing etc. I messed about w it 1st, because EYYE, bought it, plus EYYYE'm the "band" leader..I jack the buttons and sliders off for a minute, then myself and the band mate who's still with me and hasn't yet succumbed to "Hotel California syndrome"... any band I've joined/formed, the bandmates inevitably "confront" me all, "We want to do 'Hotel California'", and I'll reply "But 'Hotel CA' is boring", then they'll be, "Open up your mind, maa-aan", and I'll respond by opening up my mouth and vomiting live guppies in Clamato with diced carrots, and the band's done... He and I are looking on as my GF has her turn jacking off the knobs and sliders, as we both try to act like we're NOT playing pocket pool from watching her. Then his turn, etc. He says it first. "This synth SUCKS". She agrees, I more than agree. The filters and envelopes have the weakest effect I've ever witnessed on any synth. Sliding and knobbing, even switching between the, like, two waveforms on each oscillator even has next to no effect. It doesn't seem possible, you know. So yeah, sending that bland thing back, when I should have got maybe that Microfreak; I'm still on the quest. Thx for this helpful bit here, it was very good.

While I do acknowledge the admission of the free-wheeling nature of this review offered at the beginning, my first thought is that beginners, particularly, will not be well-served by this video's comparison. So, I suppose the audience really matters here. I don't own either of these devices, but there are a number of other KZbin dives into both that are far more useful for deciding which one might be a good fit, especially for someone new to the game. First impressions reviews are generally the bane of folks who have yet to purchase their first synthesizer. A critical realization is that, to a beginner, the knobs on a monophic analog synth do not do exactly what they say they are going to do any more than the knobs on a paraphonic digital synth do. If someone has yet to learn what an LFO or an envelope are and what to expect from them, then the labels on the knobs won't help much without a certain amount of preparation. So, learn the Crave's knobs and patch bay, or learn the Freak's knobs and menus--it's all the same. The run-through of the Aruturia MicroFreak was particularly unfair, given that others reviewing this synth on KZbin have been able to obtain rich sounds from it with little effort. The dude from loopop made the MicroFreak sound like a veritable Vangelis track within a few minutes (which, I surmise, has contributed to its monster popularity). The mod matrix looks particularly interesting to me as part of a possible fast and lightweight gig setup with a combination reverb/delay (really, now, no need for patch cables--interesting indeed). Seems paraphonic with quasi-aftertouch would be killer in that use factor. In all seriousness, the Freak's key bed looks and sounds like it could do at least a few of the things that a ROLI Seaboard is capable of! One important point: the MicroFreak has a strange feature that allows the player to send any preset to the panel, so that the patch itself then reflects the panel settings--knobs and all. Not quite the same, but still an interesting and useful way to make presets do more work when composing. Frankly, I'm considering either buying both, or just adding a Mother 32 to my table.

Fun way to discover the pleasure of the Freak is on your back in bed. Thumb underneath, press glide and slide. Happy accidents. Slow down. Listen. Experiment. The part of my brain that salivates for a reliable correspondence between signs //-= + [] 24.54 and "thing" is as likely to get stuck as play. So I like the Freak's freakishness, its frequencies seemingly emanating and reverberating as The Body Electric opens or closes the circuit by direct contact with the printed circuit board. How freaky!! & oh so responsive and easy.
