I quickly recorded this video on my phone to help other to not have the same struggles I did when trying to connect their Wing to a computer. Apologies for the poor video quality as I do not own a camcorder. The video was made using my cell phone. **DISCLAIMER** Please know that i am a hobbyist and by no means an expert. As time, allows; I can answer basic questions regarding this video.

Hello. I run a small studio in Korea. I bought a wing this time. It's hard to find information in Korea. Write down the questions here. If you don't mind my asking for help. I'm not good at English. Please excuse me. I recorded a multi-track song with Wing on DAW. I would like to record the recorded source again in DAW with Wing's FX. Could you explain the routing method for this?

Hello Wilo, I am very new to digital mixers and consider myself a lowly hobbyist. That being said, this is one of the methods I would love to learn myself. As far as I am concerned, the answer is no, this is not possible. I have had people comment that this can be done, yet no help or solutions are offered. If I ever encounter a solution for this method, I will certainly post a video on the subject. Additionally, if anyone else reading this has a solution, please be kind and share with the rest of us. Thanks for the video - how are you getting on with it. I'm a long time Ableton Live user but thinking of picking one up as my first home mixer to replace most of the functions of my DAW. I'll just use the DAW like a multi-track / arrangement editor. it certainly seems like a complete piece of gear. I'd like to see a 'how to use it as an audio interface video' if you didn't make one already. What kind of latencies can you get down to with solid reliable performance? Can it do 48 mono USB channels into your DAW or only 24 stereo? Can you record all of the effects, eq, compression etc over the USB? How does the USB situation apply to laptop users - do laptops always have certain dedicated USB sockets that are direct to the motherboard? In terms of ergonomics are all of the controls easy to see and reach including the touch screen and channel strip or are they a bit far away? Thanks

Hello Made in Machines. Thank you for your kind reply. To answer your questions, please bear in mind that I am a hobbyist and by no means an expert. First of all, lets answer your questions. I am making a series of videos centering around using the Wing in a studio environment. I aim to highlight both the successes I have with the wing as well as what I am struggling with. As far as latencies go, I would say I am not getting anything noticeable, I seem to be getting the same results as I have with using my Focusrite LQ 56 that the Wing replaced. To my understanding, the wing is capable of 48 channels of either mono and stereo. I have gotten instructions from Behringer on how to record with the Wing's effects, but the instructions are difficult for me to understand, therefore the videos and my hopes in that someone can make one as I do better with visual learning. As far as USB on a laptop, you will be fine as long as you do not use a USB hub. I believe I commented on this on a prior video. As far as the ergonomics go, I use this stand... www.amazon.com/OnStage-MUS-MIX400-On-Stage-Mixer/dp/B000RXN6XI/ref=sr_1_3?crid=2LJWJEGUR0TY&dchild=1&keywords=mixer+stand+music&qid=1597168549&s=musical-instruments&sprefix=mixer+stand%2Caps%2C160&sr=1-3 ... The stand comfortably accepts the wing, I just removed the rubber feet and I have the luxury of moving the stand. With the tilt, I can comfortably reach the faders and read the scribble strips. I would award the wing with a score of 8/10. The reason being is that Behringer's documentation is minimal at best (especially regarding studio use) plus the remaing 2 issues I would like to conquer are 1. Creating a hardware loopback for outboard gear 2. Record using the Wing's built in effects. In theory the Wing in my opinion does a great job in replacing an audio interface and a control surface, but the lack of resources prevents me from giving a perfect score which I am sure the Wing has the potential to achieve. I was on the fence on going the Behringer or Presonus route but the Wing won with the promise of the effects and the DAW functionality. Once I get this figured out completely, I hope to make a video to help others avoid all of my struggles. I would welcome a collab with Behringer or anyone else. Better yet, a video from someone who has conquered these hurdles can contribute a video. Sorry for being to wordy, but I hope I have been of some help. Warm Regards, Paul

I appreciate your video. I am still on the fence about this board, and your information was enlightening. I currently run 24 in/24 out not using a mixing board but relying on control surfaces, which is still very good, but I am an old school front of house mixer so I'm itching to get something more like this. Take care!

Thank you for your kind words. I must be of the small minority who got the board for studio use. I still use my mackie control surface to mix with. Like many others I am waiting for the firmware update containing the DAW functionality. Until this firmware comes out, I cannot recommend this board. It seems that the covid 19 epidemic has hampered progress on software development. I have spoken via email to Behringer, unfortunately all I got was an ambiguous "soon". The best I can tell you is to remain on the fence, at least until Wing reviews are in or a better option avails itself. I hope more people out there can share their experiences and opinions.

Thank you greatly for taking the time to make this detailed video as a modest "hobbyist". :) We greatly appreciate it. I have a few questions... Does the Wing have touch-sensitive faders? Can automation be written in touch, latch, write modes? Can you control send levels and plugin parameters from the board in DAW mode Can the board be used to control FL Studio and Magix Samplitude DAWs? Is that you playing the piano?

Hello TeknoMaatix, First of all thank you for your kind words and acknowledging my amateur status. I will attempt to answer your questions as best as I can according to my limited experience. Q: Does the Wing have touch-sensitive faders? A: By this do you mean. If I touch a fader, does the track gets activated on the DAW, if so; I believe the answer to be no. You would need to either hit the select button on the DAW or select the track on the DAW itself. Q: Can automation be written in touch, latch, write modes? A: Yes, I am able to do this by selecting the write automation button in Cakewalk. Q: Can you control send levels and plugin parameters from the board in DAW mode A: No, not as far as I can tell Q: Can the board be used to control FL Studio and Magix Samplitude DAWs? A: If those DAW's support the MCU or HUI protocol, then yes it should. Q: Is that you playing the piano? A: Oh boy, do I wish. No, that was a patch demo on my Roland Integra. Once again, thank you for your attention to the video and I wish you many hours of bliss with your music!

@@basementmidi Wow. The detailed and clean answers are greatly appreciated. Well you did answer a coming question about track selection through fader touches. I saw this feature on the Avid S series line of DAW controllers, which is another option I was considering. So thanks. Although it does not have that particular feature, it MAY still be touch sensitive. Wanna find out? Lets say you have written some automation in "write mode" to a guitar part from the start of the session until about 1 minute in. Later you need to make an adjustment to only a certain part of this automation without losing the entire automation pass. Somewhere between 20 and 30 second in. (At this point you have the choice between Overwrite, Touch and Latch modes within Cakewalk). So now you switch to "touch mode" and hit play from the top. In this mode, the automation does not begin to overwrite until you actually touch a fader. You don't have to move it. When you release the fader, the automation stops overwriting. Whats unique about this is that only the automation where you touched the fader was altered, the remaining automation from the last pass is still intact. A normal overwrite will simply erase all automation and overwrite it completely. Latch mode will begin overwriting when you touch a fader and continue overwriting from there even if you release it until you stop that pass. I know these may sound like not so big of a deal, but in many critical mixing sessions, sound design, ADR, etc. IT IS VERY CRITICAL. Of course Touch and Latch can not be accomplished from a console if the faders are not touch sensitive. In the event that they are not, the fader has to actually be physically moved instead of simply being touched in order to be recognized and written during these two modes. Have you ever had to use automation in this way? I do every day! If you haven't, try it out when you have the time and interest and let us know!

The Wing is a major downgrade from the Sapphire Liquid 56. the 56 will go up to 192kHz whilst the highest sample rate of the Wing is only 48kHz. It is only as good as the ADAT8200 which I also own but when switched on I have to drop the Liquid 56 sample rate to 48kHZ. Yes many will accept the 48kHz as a compromise, but most pro studios/producers would laugh at you and claim it to be a amateurs toy and tell you to buy a Allen Heath SQ series mixer. It looks an amazing piece of kit and serious good fun to play with, but like the X32, more suited to live than studio production I have looked at both the X32 and Wing as a replacement for my Yamaha 01x which I complimented when I bought the Liquid 56. Sadly neither for the price are better than what I have now. I would be as well keeping and using the Liquid 56 and buying the Behringer xtouch as a simple DAW control surface. I know the 48kHz sample rate is a seriously contentious subject, like CDs and "original" vinyl but you loose a lot of head room when it comes to plugins when your only using 48kHz.

Hello Uselessoldman. I agree with you. If I was running a pro level recording studio, I would be using an Antelope, Lynx or UA interface. My needs however do not require that. I am pretty sure that I mentioned in the video that I am a hobbyist. The projects I create are fir my own enjoyment plus the wing comes in handy when jamming with my friends. I certainly do not have any aspirations to open a studio, besides I already have a full time job that keeps me busy. 44.1 recording is good enough for me especially since I cut my recording teeth on a cassette tape 4 track. The wing purchase was made with workflow in mind. To my knowledge, there are no other control surfaces out there with 24 faders that would comfortably fit on a mixing stand with a built in audio interface to boot. I don't want the clutter of a Mackie with several extenders. I am sure there are other hobbyists out there like me that may have purchased the wing for similar reasons. Additionally I have personally had a learning curve with the wing and wanted to share my findings with others at the same time hoping to recieve help and advice. Unfortunately your comment did not do this. In conclusion, not everyone wants to drive a Ford. Some people prefer Honda or Ferrari, others quite happy with a Chevy or Toyota. Does the perfect interface/control surface combo exists out there, perhaps not. As for now the wing works for me.

@@basementmidi Hi Paul. I fully understand and appreciate the x32/Wing both offer fabulous, crazy features for the money. Strange & sad that the wing only offers 8 xlr preamps unless you buy the expansion snake making the over all cost closer to the £3k mark, double that of the x32. I also agree there is no perfect control surface and the good ones are not cheap either, specially when you still have to buy the audio interface on top. As for the Mackie, I counted that out, for what it would cost I would buy the x32 any day, with the bonus x32 has the audio interface should I want to use it, its there, so are the outputs. What I would like to know is when you have recorded your tracks from the Behringer to your DAW can you then control and change the effects from the Behringer /DAW or are they hard coded to the recorded tracks? Can you record the tracks dry, without effects, then duplicate the tracks and use the Behringer to then add effects later inside the DAW or only on the unit itself? Meaning you have to route your DAW tracks from the computer back through the Behringer and back into the DAW? I use the word Behringer cos I wonder if what the Wing can do the x32 also does, or similar. I know the Wing has substantially more effects power over the x32, but I wonder if the work with the DAW/computer in a similar way
@basementmidi
@basementmidi 4 жыл бұрын
@@uselessoldman7964 I totally agree on the limited amount of inputs, and I have used every last one of them. Thankfully, I do not need any more at this time. Perhaps down the road I might expand with the S16 or something similar. As far as using the Wing effects, I wish I knew how. However, to my knowledge, neither Behringer or anyone out there on the web has offered a solution. Personally, I only use the Wing effects when jamming with others. As far as recording, I use "in the box" processing for all my gating, reverb and eq-ing needs. Perhaps a viable solution would be to go the presonus route as they have the fat channel effects as VST's in studio one. Until then, I guess we need to wait and see if anyone will build the "perfect" studio desk/interface/surface.
