I use both and like both. They each have their place. Currently, I will not sell a WING to anyone and for that matter any Music Tribe Product due to the support on the back end. I've had a DL231 stage box out for a power supply for 10 months now. We just bought a replacment for it and it was broken. I need a fader for a WING and it is 6-9 months before we will see it. I can't. I just can't. So, if you are in the market for a console, ask about the service on the back end of the purchase.

Wing has 48 Stereo inputs, SQ 48 Mono inputs. Wing has additional EQ on each channel for aux sends. Wing has 16 Stereo busses, SQ only 12. Wing has 8 Matrices, SQ only 3. Wing has 2 inserts per channel, SQ only 1. Wing has 4 Stereo busses. SQ only 1. Wing has 48ch usb interface, SQ 32ch interface. Wing can record up to 64ch on SD cards, SQ up to 32 on usb. Wing has a ton of native plugins and hardware models, SQ only a few, need to buy separately. Wing only has 8 mic inputs, needs stage boxes. SQ5 has 16 mic inputs. Wing has stagebox source naming and tags (new concepts), SQ doesn't. UPDATE: Wing can record to internal SD cards AND usb interface simultaneously, SQ can only record to one at a time: internal usb(A) or usb interface(B). Wing can assign parameters to faders, SQ cannot. Both Wing and SQ have fully customizable fader layers, BUT here's a BIG difference: Wing (even X32) has two banks that can each reflect different layers, SQ's only reflect one layer across the entire desk. WING is definitely more powerful.

Nudgy is right. No difference between SQ5, 6 and 7. Just a bigger surface, so less layer jumping and more physical I/O on the back, but still 48ch mono inputs in total. Going to be setting up Dante software this weekend. I had an issue with sending audio signals from the Behringer wing to our streaming PC, whereas it was being sent through analog xlr cables going into a usb interface. We had to alter the cable with compression dongle switches in order to get the audio stream to capture correctly. Only problem was I was unable to properly mix the sound going into the stream from the Behringer wing. I had to set the gains to be really low so that the streaming pc would amplify it in such a way that it wasn't so distorted when I had the gain nearing unity on the Behringer wing. I was basically mixing with separate headpones going into a smartphone watching the live stream online stream with 10 second delays in order to spot check till it sounded okay, lol. I'm really looking forward to seeing Dante remedy this issue. Learning a lot from Churchfront, super fortunate you folks take the time to do this for your community of tech/worship leaders.

The Wing does snapshots, so it can recall eq/routing/faders/user banks/etc. pertinent to the type of ministries using the console throughout the week. This is amazing for me, because I can teach the women’s ministry (who can often be the most overwhelmed by this technology) how to access their snapshot/file on the Wing, which I’ve programmed to have all the faders blank except for two channels (computer audio for showing videos, and the mains fader) only seeing what they need to see for their context is way less intimidating then seeing a Sunday morning service snapshot! May not help with locking down controls for different users, but at least giving each Ministry/scenario their own snapshot is helpful
@ryanjohnson15903 жыл бұрын
Been using the wing now for about 8 months and I can honestly say it is one of the most incredible consoles out there right now. Both for the price and in terms of just about anything under $20k-$25k. I've looked. At that point, the only reason one would choose another platform is because they prefer working on that particular platform, and not because it offers a feature set vastly superior to that of the Wing. Everything from the incredibly DEEP routing flexibility, to the available "plugin" style effects [16 stereo], to the plethora of boutique, again "plugin" style, compressors, eqs, gates and other goodies that can be used on every channel simultaneously. Not to mention the ability to completely reorder your channel processing chain, or the 3 band eq they have to do some basic EQ work on sends that you set "Pre". And on that, pre and post is completely determinable per channel based on where you choose to tap a signal. Honestly the list goes on and on and on. If someone wanted to really know more, just hit me up however you'd like and I'll geek out on this with you. But yea, in short, I've used both at relative length, and in my humble opinion, the Wing takes it. Its just unfortunate that its price point makes it seem like a more "pro-sumer" console, so many pros wont take a serious look at it and then the more "pro-sumer" users rarely will ever find true need or use for its feature-set and therefore will completely underuse it or overlook it altogether in favor of the X-32 they already have.

@Churchfront You did not cover the SQ5/6/7 FPGA 96k critically important advantages for lowest combined signal path latency and for DAW recording it would also be sonically superior. Wing is locked in 48K. Also missing was SQ5 can rack today and Wing needs a very expensive $1000 Doghouse case. The headphone jack is on top of SQ5/6/7. Drawbacks are only 1 option bay on SQ5 and WING will eventually have both and internal mini PCIe bay and external option Dante 64 Bay. The big cost difference is SQ5 must license the plugins for $1000 or so and WING includes all of them.

Great video, but there are a few things about the Wing that were not mentioned. First, while it can only process 48 Channels, those channels can be stereo channels. So if you have a variety of stereo sources on your stage, (keyboards, guitars, etc.), that could add up to a LOT more channels. (I believe that while you can put two inputs into one channel on the SQ boards, both of those channels count against your final count... I may be wrong about that though.) Also, in terms of outputs, the Wing also blows away the SQ5, with 16 Stereo sends, 8 Stereo Matrices and 4 stereo outputs (vs. 12, 3, and 1 on the SQ) The Wing also has boutique Gate, compression and EQ emulations available on every channel included in the price whereas that capability costs an additional $520 in add-ons for the SQ series. The Wing also has more parametric bands (8) available on the outputs as well. And where the SQ-5 is a descendant of the D-Live, the Wing is really the poor man's version of the Midas Heritage D. That is too say, a LOT of the technology in the Wing (to include the ability to solo EQ bands without affecting the house output) was developed while designing the HD96. With all of that said, I have heard that the native remote control software for the Wing is still a bit sketchy, and I am looking forward to improved stability and functionality on that front. Also, it should be noted that the SQ5 has 96KHz processing whereas the Wing is limited to 44.1/48 KHz. Both good consoles, and they both have their pros and cons. Good review!

Yes, these are important distinctions that probably would’ve been worth mentioning. We currently are using an SQ5, but are upgrading to a Behringer wing. Having to pay Allen and Heath extra in order to have basic things like a De-easer left me like, “Are you kidding me?” And then you have to go online to unlock that feature, and you better make sure you buy the feature for the right console. Unlocking it for an SQ6 doesn’t unlock it for an SQ5. Also, the routing makes more sense on the Wing. Setting up the SQ5 for virtual Soundcheck takes a bunch of routing work. But with the Wing, we have it now set up for a single button routing recall that allows virtual Soundcheck.

It's cons are the scribble strips & LEDs are prone to discoloration, the faders lag and have calibration issues. The RTAs on EQs also lag behind realtime. There are a decent number of effects, but they aren't amazing. The preamps leave a lot to be desired. You will have to buy additional components (brackets to mount the stage boxes in a rack). But we also all know that’s coming. Most churches aren’t using Dante, but it’s certainly an awesome solution for many problems.
@TechguyAllen4 жыл бұрын
A couple of key highlights are missing that will greatly impact churches. While both are 48 channel consoles, the WING is only available in one configuration (as shown) with 8 XLR inputs (preamps). The SQ 5, 6, & 7 offer 16, 24, and 32 onboard preamps (XLR inputs) respectively. This is a big plus for churches that have existing analog wiring and don’t need a stage box. Also the WING is a 48kHz console. It will work with 96kHz stage boxes and such but the console is 48kHz. The SQ series is 96kHz. If stage boxes are needed, the SQ line will work with 48kHz stage boxes that work with the QU line and will also work with the 96kHz stage boxes that go up through the D-Live series.
@MGort-bb8op4 жыл бұрын
People cannot hear difference between 48/96khz. Certainly not live.. The Wing has 8 Pro preamps inside. the difference with the x32 preamps is big. when you connect a dl16 / 32/153/251, the difference in preamps between Wing and SQ is fixed. Myself, I prefer Midas Pro preamps than 96khz dlive. (If you buy the DX series stage box from allen & heath which are relatively expensive.)
@steakikan4 жыл бұрын
@@MGort-bb8op I thought DX168 is about the same price as DL16? Pre-amp wise I would give point to Midas but the soft limiter on Allen Heath is not bad, at least compared to Yamaha's. 96khz is nice on IEMs tho, but more importantly the 0.7ms round trip latency exclude FX on SQ is very nice on IEMs setup. My only gripe right now with Wing is that the documentation is basically nil plus no desktop editor. Both I usually use to know the mixer inside out before purchase. My only gripe with SQ is the fact that you have to purchase additional FX/ Deep/ whatever and you can't transfer that license. Come on AH, you can do better than that. Actually scrape that, they did the same shit on Avantis.
@audiotom20104 жыл бұрын
steakikan Do you think there is one who can imagine a difference between the 0.7ms of the SQ and the 1.0ms of a wing?
@TechguyAllen4 жыл бұрын
M. Gort you are correct that in a live setting it is nearly impossible to hear the difference in 48/96kHz. Though you can hear a difference with stereo IEM mixes, especially in the panning space between left and right. It is a difference between the consoles and something worth mentioning. Both the Wing and the SQ line are great consoles for houses of worship but the SQ having frame sizes with enough local inputs to not need a stage box is nice for venues with existing analog lines. If you do need a stage box, the DX168 is in the same range as the DL Midas series. If you jump to the D-Live stage boxes you will be more in the Midas Pro series stage boxes.
@timwatson6824 жыл бұрын
Agree about the physical connections - If I buy a 48 channel desk I want connectors :-) .. I guess the expectation is that you will use a digital stagebox these days, but if you are upgrading form analog and already have the infrastructure to get all your signals from stage to mixer, the stage boxes are a big additional cost.

Question: Do you need a console within the Dante network. Could you route: Dante stage box -> DAW computer -> Dante Speakers?
@steakikan4 жыл бұрын
If I'm not mistaken this will depend on the Stagebox. Some Stagebox like from Yamaha, Focusrite or any with independent preamp control thru software or on the hardware itself could make it work I think. IIRC Allen Heath Dante Stagebox do not support such preamp control but you can still tap it directly to DVS.

With that said, the Wing has a user interface that is designed to really complement a DAW. It even includes a jog wheel and can be set up to work as a Mackie MCU (or HUI) for Logic, Cubase, ProTools, Studio One, Reaper, etc, to include LED labeling all of the appropriate buttons and knobs that correspond to the various DAWs. In addition, you can use up to all 24 faders to control your DAW automation. Very cool that that is built into the box.

@Zadagu4 жыл бұрын
I would love to see a smaller wing. Espacially with high quality faders and less wheight. But I'm afraid it's not going to happen. Midas will release their HD96 Air, a midas wing would be a hard competitor for the HD96 Air. Maybe Behringer is going to scale it down. I just wonder when this is going to happen. The X32 was released in 2011, the compact followed in 2013. But now there is the fucking pandemic, that might delay new hardware releases. We'll have to wait.

Some small things with the SQ5: 1. not able to change the order of processing, 2. not able to use more then one insert pr ch and no insert -> insert, 3. only the "touch and turn" knob is precis and feels good, 4. I bought a Wing at the start of the year, functionally it is awesome, sound quality not so good. If they are the exact same as the Midas pro preamps, I wouldn't buy a Midas either. The Yamaha has way more detailed low end, so does my Roland M200i. I sold the wing within a month of purchase. awesome what you can top with it, but my opinion is, the better the original sound you get in through the preamps, through good preamps your always going to get a far better mix. The preamps on the wing where so clean and clinical, and the imaging was huge, but it was just unrealistic to my ears and lost the depth I am used to while mixing. Don't get me wrong, its an amazing desk all the same, but personally I can get way better quality with 1 eq and 1 compressor when the preamps are amazing than I can with tons of eps and compressor when the preamps are bad. My 2 cents.

SQ all the way. It is 96k, that pretty much settles it. I have mixed on the QU and the Wing, the QU sounds better. The Avantis is mind blowing. So if the 96k of SQ is half of what the Avantis is, the SQ is the ONLY logical solution. A lot of people have AES50 consoles, you can sell all your AES50 and P16 devices to them to pay for changing to A&H. 96k BABY!!!!!!!!

@MGort-bb8op4 жыл бұрын
Nowadays all the digital consoles are designed to work with an stagebox/snake. This is a device with more preamps which you can connect with a single utp/rj45/cat5e cable. Very convenient and it saves you and the manufacturer lots of money. For example: You need 16 extra preamps. You can chose the S16(wing) or the ar2412(SQ) stagebox. You need better quality preamps? Then the DL16(Wing) and DX168(SQ) would be the better option. You need 48 channels and want to spread them across the stage? 3x S16 or 2x ar2412 might be a better option. The point I wanna make is, they designed the console to work with a stagebox. The Inputs on the back of the digital mixer are called "Local" inputs. These are handy to have for conncting a pc for background music or for example, wireless equipment. We use 4 preamps for connecting our ambient room microphones, 8 preamps for wireless equipment and 6 pre`s for pc`s, mobile phone, etc. All other audio sources are connected to the stagebox 90feet away. Behringer and Allen & Heath both have multiple options for stageboxes. Like the example above you can chose between a lot of configurations. One mention: The Midas stageboxes are compatible with the Wing. (Midas makes better quality pre`s than Behringer). Greetings, Marc *Sorry for my English, it`s not my native language.
@patrickk81334 жыл бұрын
@@MGort-bb8op This means a lot of sense why they have way less pre-amp than the supported channels. Now I need to plan the additional cost for the stagebox to use more than the number of "local" inputs. Thank you so much for the info.
