The Behringer XM8500 is a really great sounding microphone and since the release of the new SL84C, I thought I'd do a comparison video. I also compare the XM8500 to the JTS NX8 and also to the Rode Procaster.

I love my condenser mics, but the problem is they pick up the sounds of a bird pooping in a neighbor's house...four counties away. Might have to buy two dynamic mics for now till I can get a sound-treated room.

same problem I have with condensor mics.... I picked up an Electrovoice RE27 (a $500 mic!) for $200 used - but in excellent condition. It is the best mic I've ever used and eliminated much of my noise problem....

Great review - and you make me feel feel wise! I have been using the Behringer 8500 and have loved the sound. I do add a little bass on the mixing board. I watched several reviews (OK - more than several) on the Procaster, and everybody loved it, plus it looks cool. But I was so pleased with the sound that my little $20 Behringer mic gave me, it seemed irresponsible to upgrade to the Procaster and spend over $200 on it. I doubted I would get that much improvement on quality of the audio. Great to get a little confirmation that I made the right decision.

The XM8500 is such a bargain. Been using a bunch of them for years. They were under $20 US when I got mine, I felt almost criminal spending that little for what I got!

i own xm8500 also have tested it againts my friend's q7. imma say i prefer the 8500 for my singing voice. its sounds much boomier than samson.

Hello Shane. Great video. For the purpose of recording voice overs and some KZbin videos I'll buy the XM8500 + Behringer UMC22. I was wondering if I should also buy a fethead to add more gain and improve sound quality or you think it might be overkill? Many thanks!!

So, I guess in summary: If you're going dynamic, try out an xm8500 and you'll get 'most' of the way there, especially if you have the right equipment. Thanks for the video.

I use the xm8500 on my show and love the sound would you recommend adding a bit of high end to help with some of the lower end boominess I still get even after cutting the low end?

I've been aiming for the XM8500 for a while now but all the stores here are out of stock and one of them offered me the SL84C. Looking at all reviews of this mic right now. I have an Audient ID4 MkII interface and I plan to use it for voice overs for my youtube content. The XM8500 sound fuller but is there anything else I could be missing if I went the SL84C? I will post EQ the voice tracks. But the saddest part is, the authorized Behringer retailer that offered me the SL 84C has them priced at USD52 haha, and the same for the xm8500 if it was in stock.

If possible, it would be appreciated, if your intro music was a bit quieter. I had to turn the sound down, and then up again when the mic came on. I like your reviews, so I thought this would be some nice polite critiquing. ♥ By the way, I'm listening on a headset, so maybe that should be used to measure sound quality for the production of the videos on KZbin.

generally speaking.... Behringer has great products for the price! I sometimes see them getting a bad rap... but I have a number of Behringer products I use for professional VO and podcasting work and it is hard to beat their gear for the money. A great value! Thanks for the video!

I believe “Ultra voice” is not the same as the classic version of just “XM8500”. I might be wrong, but just in case someone is reading the comments, I suggest you double check this info, before you make a final decision. I believe that the ultra voice version is double the price

I feel the old Ultravoice has a little bit of a boxy and congested character, that the new cheap mic lacks, and there is no top end to the XM8500 like at all, which i find really unsatisfying. Your JTS is sounding pretty good on you though.

My goodness those mics are very directional, ie, if you are 1" off-centre the volume drops to 25%. I think I would prefer the BM800.

What do you mean by PURE audio? If you're talking about higher-end mixing headphones look into the Sennheiser brand. :) If you want something that sounds great that won't send you broke then check out the Audio-Tecnica stuff. :)

The 84C doesn't have a transformer, so it has a more direct and harsher sound.

The SL84C is definitely not in the same range as the XM8500. To be honest it's also only half its price. The BA85A vs the XM8500 is a different discussion. Both are in the same price range. One (the XM8500) is more neutral, and the other (the BA85A) has more presence. Both are great microphones, and as the XM8500 handles EQ rather well, so you could make them sound quite similar. You could also use the XM8500 on instruments, the BA85A might not be as useful there due to the presence boost.

I love the XM8500s. I have two of them. You see all these streamers with Shure SM7Bs and I ask myself why? Do they think it's better? It is in some ways (plosive rejection is definitely a lot better) but looking at the costs and the fact that an SM7B is relatively deaf, needing a lot more preamplification. I have seen one popular YTer express regret that he bought an SM7B as part of his mancave because he had to buy so much more stuff to get decent quality out of it! I have a mixer that I use for serious work, but I also have an XLR to 3.5mm TRS cable that I plug directly into my PC mic input, and it works surprisingly well. So for vocals... this coupled with a pop filter (you're actually using a windshield which helps but is not the same thing), or angling the mic in the way you say, is an excellent choice.
