Yes, i live near Mt Panorama and have been following it since 1971. Jake, yes the placement of the spectators in this mod is spot on correct. No spectators have ever been able to get to some pf the best vantage points around the circuit like going up the mountain or down Conrod Straight, ( i continue to write letters to the Council about that) . I love that there is the original Conrod Straight option. two words that probably best describe Mt Panorama is 'notoriously intimidating' . The golden era of the Bathurst endurance race is the Bathurst 500 Miles from 1963 to 1972 when the category was strictly for production cars only, as from showroom including the wheel jack. There is plenty of footage of the early races here on KZbin. Harry Firth who has won it, as was the HDT team manager described the cars brakes as only being good for 4 hard stops. so driving style was that of virtually not using brakes, Peter Brock and other would adopt the Jim Clark style he would use in the Cortinas slide into corner to wash speed, instead of the brakes. and great job with this mod essay Jake as always, Thanks :)

​@@GPLaps As I understand it, the circuit was originally conceived to run clockwise, and the pit paddock and pitlane built where it is to suit the Australian right-hand drive, but it was soon realized that going up hill through the Dipper and Esses ( which is west ward) in the late afternoon resulted too much glaring sunlight blinding the drivers eyes, so it was soon decided to switch and run in the current counter clock-wise direction, however it then meant that the drivers were counter opposed to the pitlane bays inhibiting drivers ability to hand signal to pit crews etc..... and yes the finish line is further back down straight from the start line...... In the early days of the circuit, turn 1 Hell Corner was called so, because on the exit of the corner was huge earth storm drain ditch directly beyond the track limits. hense it's name..... There was also a telegraph pole within the track boundary just a short distance from the starting grid at the end of the pitlane sheds, there was also another pole on the track down near Murray's Corner...... Before the big V8s arrived on the scene in 1967, the Mini Coopers and GT Cortinas were the cars to beat. In 1966, the Minis dominated and won outright and filled the top 9 places outright. Throughout the 60s, the Studebaker Larks was also a popular entry they came close to winning but didn't quite snatch a victory...... My favourite race is the 1972 500 (miles). no co-driver requirement regulations, a wet race, a classic tussle between Ford V8 grunt and GM-Holden small car handling. Peter Brock took his first victory in 6 hours 59 min, in the 'giant killer' Holden Torana XU-1 without a co driver. Canadian Alan Moffat also won it without a co-driver twice before in 1970 & 71 in the Ford Falcon. Ford driver and a race winner Fred Gibson (1967) would take a packed lunch of sandwiches with him in the car. In 73 the race was re-categorized from 500 Miles to 1000 Km, new rules changes were introduced which meant no more solo driving and co-drivers were now a must, and certain modifications to cars were then on permitted and developed going forward. A fun fact about Chevrolet Opala. Those used on stock race had a 250-S 6 cyl 4.1 liters engine, same used on old chevy C-10's with some light rework, maybe arround 170hp. Today, those same engines with the same model cars are used on brazilian drag racing, reaching more than 1000hp with a stock block, running with a ethanol.

@@sammy_dog exactly! That’s the reason why I pretty much abandoned ams2.. I love vintage racing and it’s not really existent in ams2, so I stick with RF2 and AC. Both have great vintage racing leagues!

AMS should get rid of those weird South American cars that nobody cars about and build european sportscars from the 50-70s! They don’t have to be licensed, just do something like the endurance packages that where build for RF2! But those weird cars (and tracks) are just no fun to drive and are all boring..

Really captures the feel of Bathurst in that era - particularly seeing the end of the race with the sun low in the sky & the cars looking a little the worse for wear - very evocative. In '83 there would have been a separate under 3,000 cc class, and in earlier years there were even more different capacity classes running alongside each other, so dealing with traffic was a big part of the racing - something you miss when populating the grid with a single vehicle like this.

Bathurst has become a boring, 'one make' race now. Needs to revert to the old multiclass Production race. So typical of the corporate world to hijack something, then ruin it in the pursuit of profit.

@@geoffheard5768 Dude the Bathurst 6 Hour is the race you want. Production cars with multi classes, just like the old days. It's on at Easter every year. Quite a number of big name drivers get involved, it's actually pretty good. Production car endurance racing never went away at Bathurst, it just moved to Easter. And wait - did you just say Supercars is "boring"? What's your idea of excitement then? Getting holes drilled in your teeth? When you watch those old Bathurst races now they are boring as batshit - who the hell wants to watch some dude win by six laps? Absolutely nothing interesting about that.

Everything GP drives past Forrest elbow it reminds me of Dick Johnson in the big green falcon drifting wide, clipping the edge of the outside wall and disappearing into the trees. The the camera feed cuts because the car severed the cable from the nearby camera back to the studio.

How fitting that the car behind you on lap 3 rolled at the same turn where a Camaro famously rolled onto its roof in ‘82! Just did some laps on this old Bathurst. As an Aussie, I’m very impressed with Reiza’s work here.

Aussie here. These are the correct cars for Mt Panorama. They may not be much like the cars that raced there in the mid 80s, but they're bang on for the 70's cars. They're like a slightly smaller Charger.

Im from Brazil, my dad owned 1973 Opala Especial. its really cool yo see that these cars get recognized even outside Brazil, He unfortunately sold the car when I was around 14 so i never got to drive it, but hopefully one day i can finds one in that exact spec to relive some of the memories it brought.

In footage of the 1971 race a Dstdun 1600 rolls onto its roof coming onto the main straight Marshals tipped it back, and off it went. Back to the pits. Busted back and front glass, crumpled roof. Hilarious pit footage And back out it went, and finished the race

The rollover in replay view is almost reminiscent of Kevin Bartlett rolling the Channel 9 Camaro, acknowledging that he hit the opposite wall and ended up on his roof.

One curiosity about the Opala is that the AMS2 fuel gauge feels right. The sensor is not dimensioned to the fuel tank used in this car, both street and race versions (an in this last one, the fuel tank was extended)... sooooo, it would have to use some gas before the needle move. Another curiosity is that because of the pedals position, you don't heel & toe, but "toe & heel", using your toe on the throttle, not on the brake. In Brazil the standard technique is called "punta-taco", and in the Opala it's called "taco-punta". Rubens Barrichello demonstrated it in a video in the channel Acelerados. The Opala can be driven most of the time in most of the tracks in third gear. Despite having a low power output it have a lot of torque. So, you can just dive bomb some corners at low rev, in third gear, and will gain time with corner stability and entry speed. This is more evident with the old 79 and the Old Stock cars, that use road tires (this 86 used slick tires). A common steering wheel technique was move it as if you are milking a cow (more than with other cars from that time). Because of tires and suspension geometry and the power curve from the engine being smooth, with a suave "milking" to the steering wheel you can compensate the tendency that the car have to loose the rear. At old Stock Car Brasil videos you can see the drivers doing it all straights long. Rubens Barrichello (at the same Acelerados video above) said that when he was a kid, after watching a real racing at Interlagos, he tried to replicate that with his kart and failed miserably. Them, his father explained why they were doing that on the Opalas and why wouldn't work with a kart. I saw a video of the 1983 1000Km racing in Bathurst and the thing is way more crowded than in AMS2 (not only spectators, but objects). Just hope that Reiza give some good work over this track, because, as it is, I will not buy. For Brazilians, that would be an ultra offensive heresy at the same level than would be for an American to see someone reskinning NASCARs with DTM liveries lol Thank you for the video. There is also a current running series called Old Stock (that is available in AMS2 and that Barrichello used in the video), that is based in the 70s rule, but with a way stronger engine

@@Dethmeister Yes, mate... just to the record, when I was posting that, the 13yo in me gave me a hint about how it could sound to non Portuguese speakers. And to tell you the truth, the world "punta" is not from our language (it's the Italian for "tip") and "taco" means "stick". It's a very old term that I really don't know how it was composed. "Heel & Toe" translate as "Calcanhar & Dedão"... what would sound worst and I believe that this is the reason why to invent "punta-taco" lol

Love the channel and particularly the historical racing. Also interesting to note that bikes also raced at Bathurst, the Easter weekend being the usual time they were held. I believe that the last races were held in 1994.

The way we keep moving toward electronic/no noise racing, I'd like to see/we need scans of those cars from the 70's and 80's - Moffat's Falcons, Brock's Torana and Commodores, DJ's Green Falcon, even Jim Richards BMW.

@@GPLapsV8 Commodores, Falcons, and Camaros…Straight six Bimmers…Turbo Bluebirds…Rotary RX-7’s…and even a V12 Jaaaaaag entered by John Goss. The early eighties saw a stellar mix of body types and engines, with all those cars mentioned making it into Hardies Heroes at one point or another. It’s a shame that Australian Group C was only limited to Australia and didn’t get more international attention as a regulation set, as it made for some fantastically exciting and gorgeous cars

Back when I was sim racing, there was a rFactor mod for 1980s Group A touring cars. VK VL commodores, Rovers, BMW M3s, Mustangs etc. Would have been awesome to have this track back then.

Great commentary and race. As a NZer, we also used to make the Bathurst 1000 an unofficial holiday (even though its run on a Sunday). Many of the great champions were NZers, providing some of the more memorable highlights, such as Jim Richards calling the crowd 'a pack of arseholes' in 1992 from the podium, and of course the passing of the legendary Denny Hulme on Conrod straight due to a heart attack in the same race. The Group A rules in the late 80s changed the face of the race with some awesome entries and wins for the Jaguar XJS, Ford Sierra Cosworth and Nissan Skylines. Lots of good memories. Oh, and the 1 time I drove around the circuit, the speed limit is 60km/h (40mph) when the races arent on...and the cops love to sit there with a radar gun

These cars don't really suit for the 80s, but they certainly look very similar to some GM Holden Monaros that would have raced there in the late 60s / early 70s (although the Monaro had considerably more power). The 60s and 70s were mostly production cars. The 80s saw the onset of Group C race cars from which the V8 Supercars evolved. You mentioned the bare straights for spectators, and you are right in that on Mountain Straight (after Hell Corner) and all the way down Conrod Straight were all farms / residences at that time. Only place where that is different today is The Chase which has a spectator area and a gigantic motel. Spectators are mostly located across the top of the mountain and at the start / finish straight. I've been to the 1000 event (and the preceding 500 mile event) probably close to 30 times since the early 70s. Never gets old!

It looks awesome, big thumbs up to Reiza for making this because I've been hanging out for something like it for years. But I can immediately tell (believe it or not...) it's all a bit too flat. If you're listening Reiza, it's a Mountain: it's not quite a BMX track, but in a really fast car it's not far of. The hills and dips need to be made more extreme by about 10-15 percent, the Dipper especially was a real windscreen-popper back then (it was flattened out a bit the year they put in the Chase). But this is still a great effort that's making me want to get AMS2: I really hope this means there's a Bathurst carset in the works, the chance to drive an angry VH Commodore, an out-of-control XE Falcon, a turbo-boosted Bluebird or a screaming Mazda RX-7 (to say nothing of an inverted Chevy Camaro...). Even the chance to drive a class car like a Mk.III Escort (or as you said, the Isuzu Gemini) would be magic. The lighting effects though are spot-on, and the square-fronted cars with ducktail spoilers are perfectly on-brand for the era. 7:00 You didn't really see many spectators trackside on the way up Mountain Straight. The reason was that the right-hand side (outside the track) is someone's front yard, so it's off-limits to fans; you actually have to get a shuttle bus to the top of the Mountain as there's no other connection. The place should be buried in people at the top and the bottom, though. 18:59 I don't think Brocky ever raced Stateside, but he did race in Europe, including he Spa 24 Hrs for Vauxhall. Allan Moffat on the other hand did a lot of racing in the U.S. (being Canadian by birth...), including winning Sebring with BMW. 34:30 On the real track, an underpowered car could gain some time by running a wide line through Griffin's, because there's a pronounced dip at the apex that forces you to drive down into it and then drive up a steep slope out again. By running the high line you could avoid that whole mess and keep your revs up. No idea if that would work on this version, but it might be worth a try! 😁

Halve-way down Conrad straight on the right the large white object on the right is a projector screen for a drive in theater, today it is no longer operating and the screen is no longer there but you can still see the asphalt on aerial images from today.

They've done well getting 'old' Bathurst right - lots of details like the wider exit to Hell corner and the pit speed bumps. Old Conrod was fairly notorious for cars going light at that second bump, the fastest section, and drivers complained that got worse when they installed the black bridge in 1982. Mike Burgmann, who died in the 1986 race, fell foul of this when his car touched another alongside, got out of shape on the grass and basically vaulted the fence and hit the footings of the bridge. The Chase was designed soon after and debuted for 1987, when most of the modern walls were also installed, more modern pits, etc in time for the World Touring Car Championship round.

As an Aussie who worked for a time near Bathurst I think the devs did a good job with the colouring of the countryside, grass and trees. It can get green depending on the season but in the hotter weather it dries out and gets quite brown/yellow. Although a different part of Australia, I think Woochoo's Longford and the Gnoo Blas track also capture that sunburnt colouring really well.

As an Aussie and old enough to remember the races on the classic Bathurst track this is a great reproduction. Just some observations and gap fills:- The 1st right turn at the end of Mountain Straight is Griffins Bend, named after the Town Mayor who used the National Governments work for Unemployment Benefits during the depression to pay for a Tourist Drive to be built around Mount Panorama. The main straight is known as Conrod Straight - not The Conrod Straight 🙂. Darryl Waltrip said the same thing when he came out to view the Bathurst 1000 a few years after Marcos Ambrose had been running in the Nascar's over in the USA. There is a video of Darryl's ride around Mount Panorama on KZbin. Conrod Straight was amended to include The Chase for the 1987 Bathurst 1000km race as a aftermath of the crash that killed Michael Burgmann in the same race the preceding year, with his vehicle becoming airborne after cresting the 2nd hump on Conrod Straight and crashing into the bridge that crossed the circuit coming toward Murrays corner. For evidence of the many other crashes that have occurred on Mount Panorama, these can also be found from doing a KZbin search

This was great. I love hearing an American's take on our most famous track. One small point though ..... The corner you called The Quarry is actually Griffin's Bend. The Quarry is the 2 corners coming out of The Cutting. You have a new subscriber. 😎👍

You don't hear the Quarry and Frog Hollow used much anymore to describe those parts of the track, perhaps we should petition Crompo to bring them back into regular parlance. I think Reid Park and "The Grate" are probably more familiar.

I bought AMS2 a while back. Had a tough time getting a feel. Played nothing but nr2003. Got my wheel settings dialed in and have focused on running Bathurst & Group C Prototypes. I've ran close to 1000 miles with this combination and I have had the most fun ever on a sim. Thank you for introducing me to this game

Hell Corner was named after a tree stump that existed on the apex of the turn. It was believed that any motorcycle riders who hit the stump would die in an act of folly and thereby be doomed to an eternity of death.

In the very early days there was also a huge storm drain ditch on the outside of the corner exit that service the mountain straight incline, just next the edge of the track as they were in any street, i have a photo of it. at some point later, a wooden barrier fence was erected, that stayed for many years until the sandpit was installed. :)

I visited on a non-race day, and drove my rental Toyota around the track at 45kph. It was still terrifying! None of the sims do a great job of showing the huge elevation changes. There's an amazing museum to the right of Murray's corner as well. Definitely stop in there if you make it over!

watching the bathurst 1000 from this era is awesome. Need a mod for the tow trucks picking up cars. Full races from 78 are available (almost, some bits have been removed and muted for copyright etc) on youtube. Start of 1981, the opening 20 laps or so with Johnson in the XD Falcon, Bartlet in the Camaro and Brock in the VC Commodore battling it out, awesome stuff. Ill happily take up my weekends rewatching these races. The touring car races (ATCC) from the early 80s are great to watch too.

Sunday evening and just catching up on some KZbin after a great weekend of IRL racing, this video is amazing Jake, you inspire me to sim whilst at the same time feeling like ive just been in the sim rig by watching the video, Lovely jubbly and also bonus points for admitting it wasn't a single take and some earlier attempts resulted in the virtual death and destruction the rest of us face each week in the hobby haha. I think you hit on a very interesting concept Jake with regards to "sometimes slower cars are more fun". I find that I can more easily control the slower cars and that ability to control makes for more enjoyable racing. Thanks for sharing this awesome race!

Was fun to see the classic Bathurst, looks like it was a fun race. I did want to correct one error, the right hander at the end of Mountain Straight is Griffin's Bend. Hey Jake, Bathurst is one of my favorite circuits in GTR2 and I did a lot of races there. It's sad that the chicane is missing, because it always was a challenge after the full speed straight.. Greetings from germany.

The car that you have chosen remind me of the UC Torana’s of the late 70’s or XD Falcon’s of the 80’s, have a look at the Kevin Bartlett crash 1982 in his Camaro very similar to what happened in your stream.

The corner you call “quarry” is actually called “Griffins Bend” named after Martin Griffin the mayor of Bathurst who had a big part in the planning process of the track

If you want to watch some old Bathurst races, I recommend mid 90s stuff starting from the 1993 rule change. The car parity is much closer, they're overpowered for how soft the chassis are, and there's limited aero, so the racing is bumper to bumper and just spectacular.

Great video. There is a new update where the James Hardie Center is now added....it is so well done. The modelers have done a stellar job. I have done the 1985 version of the track, actually started back in rFactor 1 days and gave up lol. I then got back to it a few years ago and now it is about 80% done. rFactor 2 and on steam. I would love to hear your views on my version. The down side with this version from Reiza is that the colours of the trees and the mix of native and introduced trees are not done so well. That is something I am trying to replicate with my version as I lived near the track itself up to 1990.

I love Bathurst! That was fairly intense. I was a white-knuckling backseat driver, for sure. Hmmmm.....I'm going to use this in my pitch for a steering wheel and pedals...for Xmas.

In the 5 or so years leading up to the first Australian F1 grand prix in 1985 they raced both Formula Pacific and Formula Mondial at Calder Park prior to the Thunderdome being built. Those cars would be a lot of fun to drive around this iteration of Bathurst

Bathurst-83 is a great reminder of the "Great days". It's the year that Mazda almost won with their tiny 1.3lt Rotary powered RX-7 against the might of the 5.0lt Holdens & 5.8lt Fords. For the record, Mazda RX-7 placed 2nd in 1983 behind the might of the HDT Brock-Express that dominated in those days.

Honestly, the production car bathurst 6 hour on Easter weekend is the best one. Always so much drama. Watch it next weekend. 🤙🏼

AMS2 needs the TWR Jaguar XJS. Saw them on BBC Grandstand when they covered the Bathurst event. Many of the then BTCC drivers would go over and race there.

The drop at The Dipper was a lot sharper in the old days. Was flattened in the 90s IIRC.

Love the vids. As an FYI, the apostrophe after a number indicates length in feet. 73' means 73 feet. The year 1973 abbreviated would have the apostrophe _before_ the numbers, like this: the year was '73. The apostrophe goes where you "broke" it off. Same as in a contraction like "can't". Sure some people will bitch and moan I mentioned that. Lots of people whine. The hell with them. Keep the sim vids coming!

In 1983 the chase didn't exist. Conrod was a mile long straight. The chase was added around 87. But awesome looking track just need the Aussie cars

Really great racing in this video! Wondering if that mountain elbow turn would be better in 3rd gear, the AI seemed to consistently get on the gas quicker out of the turn, but at least twice you got a better exit and were making a run on the group ahead instead.

Brazilian Chevrolet Opala is called Opel Record in europe. In Brazil they raced as Stock Car, endurance and drag races, having a 6 cilinders in line 4.1cc engine

This is actually pretty similar to the historic HQ Monaro series that runs in Australia, including as a support race before the Bathurst 1000.

I certainly hope they make some Australian touring cars from the late 70s early 80s.. I've driven almost all the cars available on this track but nothing really feels suited to is. These cars are probably the best of the bunch.

HA ha! My dad had an Opala back in 81-82 I want to say? It was considered a fast car in Brazil :) I whole 230Hp from a super lazy V8! All I remember is that it felt huge, it really wasn't, kinda the same size of a Chevelle? Maybe a bit bigger? I remember sliding all over the bench style back seats when we took a corner, I thought it was fun. Oh the 80's! Child car seats? What is that!? LOL

It would be nice if there was an early 80s V8 sedan to race around this track in the game, but there are some other cars already in the game that fit. There's the Chevy Chevette which was very similar to the Holden/Isuzu Geminis which raced in several 1000s in the 70s/early 80s and were popular for low level one make racing in Australia for a very long time. I think there was even a support category for the 12 Hour which had them as a class about 10 years ago. There's also a classic Mini which is a bit old for 1983 but they were run in the 1000 up to the mid 70s and won outright in 1966.

the opala is a classic car in brazil, specially the 70's version, wich had to fight for the costumer preference against a dodge, we could say the 70's version was almost a muscle car on looks, oh it also had the maverick (popular known as maveco) from ford

This is awesome, little disappointing they didn't add the famous bumps the track had in it before it was smoothed out for the modern era. Hopefully they can add those things in later to improve the historical aspect and fun.

Looks spectacular, and quite realistic too. Spectators are really only around the pit straight or across the top of the mountain, yes those are private properties along the other straights. It's just a shame every time I see AMS2 it greatly pisses me. I have a G29 wheel and I get no force feedback whatsoever in this game making it unplayable (other games are fine). It also obnoxiously disables force feedback for all other games until I reboot windows.

That's an issue I have never heard of. The devs of AMS2 are pretty open to feedback, maybe report over at the Reiza forums? Especially CrimsonEminence over there is well known to respond to user questions.

@4:25 Turn 2 is Griffin's Bend, Quarry is just past the Cutting on the way up the mountain. Although Quarry never really gets a mention on commentary or when discussing the track as it's not that memorable, except for when Dick Johnson hit the rock, thrown out there by one of the fans (1980s 1000km race iirc). 👍
