Thanks for sharing your experience. You have given many good tips. This is a very honourable job but it is not for everyone obviously. Overall, it's a very difficult job mentally and physically. People need to know what to expect, more information to make a very informed decision. Mostly, the day and night proceedures are not simply sitting around after service users are settled, be it before meals, after all meals, afternoons or even going to their bed and even those who are permanently in bed. There is always things to do as bells are always ringing. For toileting times, usually before breakfast, before lunch, before evening tea and in-between. Residents are each supported in the toilet or those who need personal assistance, which is usually the majority. This involves lifting into wheelchairs, pushing wheelchairs, hoisting, ( moving and handling procedures) Residents are taken to the toilet, assisted with personal care and then back to their seats or bed. For those who are mostly in their rooms, bells are always ringing for assistance too. At times non stop, if that/those particular residents wants/feels the need for assistance. The cleaning/washing up in some homes which is usually in the majority : So washing up of the evening tea utensils after you have served the supper/evening tea on a trolley to those in their rooms and those in the lounge. So on the evening shift you share or split the duties after you have settled the residents in bed, (some homes get the afternoon staff to assist residents who want to go to bed earlier. ) Though bells maybe still ringing for those residents in bed already who feel their need further assistance. So while night staff are either in the kitchen washing up, setting tables for morning breakfast, other staff go to the laundry to pack the washing machine, then dryer and ironing. There is also cleaning/hoovering of the lounge and corridors. You still have to check on residents and there are even hourly checks in place throughout. Remember, files have to be written in too for each residents evening experience including fluids/meals. Even incidents like falls/ emergencies, paramedic visits etc. Also, with regards to staff there are people from different walks of life including native people of the country offcourse. True, one may find that some are lovely and some are very difficult to work with. I won't go into this much because I think one has to make their own decision on how to navigate this maybe by accepting how human nature can be, thinking of where people are coming from/environments and how people's behaviours are shaped by this including oneself. At the end of the day, yes you will learn alot.. It's lovely to care for others and people need the care. So do you! 🙏

You’ve given more information, thanks. Like I said earlier each home is different. Sometimes I go to a home and it’s not busy except for rounds and other homes too you can’t even sit down. So yeah… the work is not for everyone.

If I’m newly employed to a home or agency, do they have any rules concerning when to get pregnant as a married woman or do I have to wait for a certain time before I do that?
@faithstephen.2 жыл бұрын
Something like that should be in your contract but I don’t think they have any control over when you get pregnant. What you should ask about would be the maternity leave and you’re entitled to it as long as you’re a full time staff

How can I advise a lady of 45-50 living in Kenya, she is very poor and is interested in coming to UK for 2 years as a care worker. Her normal work is housekeeping/cleaner as well as farming. I have suggested that she tries for auxiliary nursing in the local hospital to gain experience but there are so few jobs where she lives. I know this lady from when I was in Eldoret and she is a good Christian lady who is not afraid of work.

How long does it take for one to become a qualified nurse after being a healthcare assistant
@faithstephen.2 жыл бұрын
When you are employed as a hca under the nhs professionals there is an opportunity to take a six months course which qualifies you to apply to the trainee nursing associate position. I think this takes about two years to complete as it’s a mixture of placements and university(one day a week). After this then you can then apply to be a nurse

You're not registered anywhere, you don't have a contract with anyone? And you can just say I won't come again and that's it Does that mean you are working illegally? On what basis is such a person in that country? And I mean someone who has no support (partner, friend, etc.) but came alone to work and live there Such a person cannot survive or be there with unstable jobs and unregistered I'm a little confused
