As an older couple (in our early 50's, coming up on 25 year anniversary in July) just wanted you both to know that I really appreciate all the life tips you are showing. Some may seem so obvious, but at the same time so so important. That some may get the " A Ha" moment and incorperate them. I play your vids for my college teens when they are sitting with me (when does that ever happen??!!) But I have great kids who listen. So blessed. But as you may also know, hearing the messsges from someone other then my wife and I, it seems to sink in more..you know. All your vids are amazing, short, to the point with so much info in the sweetest calm and yet with such a professional delivery. Thank you!! Even at my age...Join the Journey!!!

So true! Once more great video guys. I also got back to my studies after a long break and from my experience I can say that I paid a big price for being shy and feeling embraced to ask for help and assistance. Get any help that can get you closer to achieving your goal. Be nice and polite but ask for help if you need it. It's the same with procrastination, if you can't eliminate it by yourself, ask for help. Strong support system is a huge asset!

Great advice. My husband is one semester away from grad school and we’ve done it starting with 4 kids and now ending with 6 whom I have homeschooled the whole time. We’ve lived on campus to save money, my husband works full time on campus so his tuition is covered except for fees which are nominal compared to the thousands we are saving. He borrows any books he can & purchases used what he can’t. We take advantage of the student bread line and live VERY frugally. He will graduate in May 2019 and we will be debt free with savings!!

Thank you! We'll have to do a video on our finances in law school. Our savings rate was definitely not 60%. LOL. To pay for school we worked as resident advisors at the graduated family housing complex we lived at. We also received scholarships and paid the rest out of pocket. Thank you for sharing your story! It's very inspiring! I am in my mid 40s and was applying for medical school. (I went back to school and took all the science classes ) After giving birth to my child and found out that I have a pancreatic tumor, I halted on the medical school application. I wanted badly to show my daughter that woman can do anything regardless of their gender, age and race! But there are still lots of obstacles. (ie. I still don't feel financially secure and feel the need to make money now for our family in case my health goes south). Medical school is 8+ years with average of $30K-$50K/ year tuition. I wonder if you can shed some lights on how you did the cost- analysis (ie whether its worth to go back to school in the later stage of life) & how you decided to go back to school. Also, how do you plan to use your degree now that you are retiring. Thanks for sharing! Sorry for the long message. Betty & Alex from Berkeley, CA

Awesome video! I'm revisiting the video as I am struggling with justifying the desire to go back to school for a second graduate degree. I have a significant amount of debt from my first two degrees, the earnings potential in my field is on the lower end. Honestly, earning a comfortable salary is often the exception and not the rule. I am in the beginning stages of FI, going back to school will take me out of the working field for a similar length of time investment as law school (and cost similarly). My question is what led you to make your decision to go back to school and how did you justify the set back this might have had on your FIRE journey? (I realized my question is based on the assumptions that you had student loan debt, this decision was made during your FIRE journey, and that you might have accumulated some debt during law school( as that would likely be my realty). What additional advice would you give or questions that I can ask myself to guide me to the right decision? Thank you in advance for reading/ responding! -Bria

Wow I have been looking for a channel that addresses being an older parenting student in law school. Even thought of starting one! I am interested in attending UCLA Law school, but the idea that it’s full time is incredibly intimidating to me. I finished my Psych degree at UCLA when my kids were 6 and 9, and i think I accepted less from myself because I figured I had that circumstantial excuse. How did you find the workload and balance it with your kids’ lives? I’m so amazed that you did this while your husband was working away! The settling and confidence tips are resonating with me.

You are my favorite FI channel. My husband and I are following your footsteps. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for the service you provide to all of us in pursuit of FI. Christina, your story is so similar to mine! I was 34 when I got into grad school, our son was 3,5 y.o., and the school was 5 hours away! I studied like a maniac during the week and commuted 10 hours both ways every weekend just to spend time with my family. Got pregnant during final year (still dont remember how did this happened, lol). By the time of my surgical rotation I was in my 3rd trimester with a gigantic belly. Had to walk into the OR with confidence despite all the stares and judgments from the residents and other students. Worked triple hard just to prove I deserve to be there. Took my final tests a week after my son was born. Three months later got a job at the specialty I always wanted. You are absolutely right: 1. Family support is everything!!!! 2. We can always figure it out!! Again, thank you thank you for all you do!!!!

Hi. Im curious about the culture of US lawschools. Do the law professors lecture? What i mean is if the assignment is chapters 1 to 3 for the next meeting, will the professor lecture/discuss these topics or will the professor just ask questions without explaining or giving any lecture?

I’m so glad you’re talking about this. There’s so little content from mothers in law school. I’m starting law school in 2 years, at 27 and I’ll have a 6 year old. I’m constantly looking for someone who has the some at home responsibilities who went to law school to tell myself that if somebody else did it, so can I. It’s hard to watch law school experience content from non-parents bc they’re viewing it through a different lense with less responsibilities outside of law school. Anyway, thank you for telling your story. You have no idea how many people it’s inspiring

I'm studying for the bar with 15 month old. A support system is vital. I'm so grateful for my daughter's dad, her daycare, and other family members helping out.
@zknight44812 жыл бұрын
I’m in a very similar situation and I’m already in the mentality of saying no to everything. Understanding that I’m not a traditional student so I will have to miss certain experiences. For me, that’s determining whether I should go to my state school or Harvard because I’ll have less of a support system if I go to Harvard and it feels almost… unrealistic to go to an Ivy League as a parent. Like the old person who can’t get go of their youth. Idk why I don’t feel that way about state schools or even community college. I’m trying to figure out if I’m right to turn down Harvard law or not and it’s been eating me up but just hearing another parent and law student mention the fact that you have to say no to stuff you might want to do has made me feel so much less alone in that burden of “missing out”, if you will

Both my husband and I are going to law school next year and we have a toddler. The great thing is that her daycare is going to be at the university which would hopefully make things easier. However, I know it is going to be a tough ride but I have confidence that we'll manage it together. I was hoping to hear from you how the process of finding a job for you must have been. Did you have to face difficulties due to your age? Once you started working, how did you manage long working hours as an attorney? I am going to be 38 years old on my graduation and I hear that my job opportunities are going to be very limited. What is your experience?

I know this is an older video, but I'm curious what you were doing before and what made you choose law school.

I might've missed this, but what type of federal lawyer were you before you all retired?

Thanks for the share. So for both of you, are the Vlog Videos a side **gig** you do?

bud2eagle - Great question! It's a little bit of everything! :) Since we live in Japan and travel a lot, we have videos on that. And, of course, we also have videos on financial independence (making, saving, and investing money). Also, when we see a lot of the same comments, we think of other video idea. For example, we saw a lot of comments about what we do for work (I think because we did a working abroad video). Because of that, we decided to do a video on law school! :)

How did you end up in Japan?
@OurRichJourney5 жыл бұрын
For our jobs! :) Originally, we moved to San Diego after we graduated from undergrad, then we moved to Spain, then Japan, then back to Spain, then LA & the Bay Area, then back to Japan - lots of moving! :)

How does she only make $70,000 as a lawyer and retire at 40? Is the abc article correct?

I have been thinking of going to law school but so scared. I am freaking 35 how do i start?
@OurRichJourney5 жыл бұрын
Aghogho Okotie-Oyearone - It can be scary at first, but also very rewarding! I started by reaching out to people I had met who were attorneys - to find out about what law school was like and also more about the field of law. I also read books about law school. I also spent a good deal of time studying for the LSAT. You CAN do it!!! :)
