Being An Emotional Man & Controlling Them | Stoicism

We've all been there, being unable to control our impulses, and in this case our burst of emotions. Things that irritate us, things that challenge us, or things that we do not expect can trigger our emotions and make us very reactive. The problem with this is that being emotional is triggered either by our negative perceptions/perspectives on circumstances, or when our egos are challenged, doubted, or proven wrong. And with the burst of emotions that come after that, it is only to negate/defend the effect, or attack back the one that caused the hurt. However, being emotional can have drastic consequences, mostly unwanted ones, and give rise to problems that initially weren't meant to be created/initiated, and this can happen in any scenarios. That is why learning to control them is absolutely crucial if you want your mind to remain sharp and clear in the face of pressure and provocations.

Realistically, Charlie would try to argue with his Dad or talk over him. Then again, the fact that Charlie isn’t angry with him means that his father’s authority is very respectable and that the Dad himself is a rock that the waves break against. Sounds like my mom

I think this is a great way to send this message (A dad telling us this) because so many of us either don't have a dad or their dad didn't teach them things like this.. This really got to me man, thank You And I'm not saying my dad is a bad person, it's just 90% of men don't learn this stuff to pass it on

Yeap, thats the reason I narrate it from this point of view, because I wasn't taught this by my dad because he was absent for most of my life and I know that many men also suffers the same circumstances. Most of us men have to learn everything the hard way today. Thank you for your support my friend 👊

This gave me a lot to reflect on. U can’t let a little Suggestion or Critique bother you, other wise you’re a more weaker man emotionally.

Fire and gas analogy was spot on , adding more fuel to the fire of anger just to end up having to put it out on our own, when we have to deal with the consequences of our anger and make it worse by showing it.

Howdy, I respectfully don't agree with a certain point of this video, don't learn to control your emotions, learn to *understand* them. There are reasons why you have them. I was told from an early age my emotions were bad, so they could keep abusing me, also called as "gaslighting". As an adult, I realized how powerful it is to understand our emotions, once you understand them, you are less prompt to have emotional outbursts and are better equipped to face life.

I didn't specifically mention that we need to understand our emotions first before we can know how to control them. But, I have only briefly mention it in another video about emotional strength. I might need to make a specific video about that part, thanks for pointing it out

Just discovered your channel. Pretty powerful stuff if a bit preachy IMO, hear meaning "I've heard some of this before." On the subject of this video, some of this I agree with, some of it don't. Stoicism doesn't work for everybody, it sure doesn't work for me. The advice of just bottling up your anger, with all due respect, is the worst advice ever. The initial heat of whatever angered me might die off but will never completely go away, it will only add to the other hundred things I am angry at on a daily basis. I tried it. It nearly destroyed me from the inside out. I need to vent or I will explode at the wrong person or the wrong thing at the the wrong time and place. Working out however is good advice. I utilize my apartment's gym late at night when no one is there. It's a time and place where I yell and scream and cry as much I need to without hurting or scaring anyone or destroying anything. Getting in better shape is just a bonus. I just wish we had a punching bag. And while I enjoy a good laugh, I honestly find a good cry to be more effective. Forcing myself to laugh feels disingenuous. It feels like ignoring what I'm feeling rather than confronting it. "I will permit it to pass over me and through me. And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path. Where the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain." I've always believed I can't control how I feel towards something, I can only not allow IT to control me. I wish it was explained to me in that context instead just bury and ignore it. Just yesterday my roommate has been pretty brutal with insults about my weight. I'm not over weight, I have the opposite problem and I've grown up with these insults from my family who are mostly obese and borderline diabetic. It's only until I moved out did I realize how fucked up it was that I was bullied for not being a statistic. So now I don't tolerate it anymore. My roommate's comment genuinely hurt especially since I've actually been feeling pretty good about my body. I'm not likely to take as quietly for a third time in a week. Not gonna bite his head off, of course... okay maybe a little. Just enough to get them to stop. Self control is possible, I just have different ideas on how to approach it.
