Very informative video! I just returned from visiting Puerto Rico for the first time, and it was incredible! Everyone was so warm and welcoming. We went to a small beach where most of the beach goers were Puerto Rican. And even though we were some of the only African-Americans there, it felt like being at a family reunion with music, drinks, and food. I can't wait to go back! 🇵🇷

You are 100% correct Trill!! I would have to say, you are a Gringo, but not in a bad way. And actually I would consider you more Pro-Puerto Rico than some other Puerto Ricans that were actually born and raised on the island like the ones who push for statehood. The whole GringoGoHome movement is directed more towards the Non-Puerto Rican people moving in just for the Act20/22/60 tax incentives to exploit the island and cause gentrification, like the many clips going around of Americans buying houses by the beach then saying they own the whole section of the beach because their house is there. You're a cool guy Trill, there may be some extreme Puerto Ricans who don't want any Gringos in Puerto Rico at all, but to most of us and me, if you're here because you actually love the island the local culture, and not here to dodge taxes, then you are welcome.

English: Funny how the same people who want to give up Puerto Rico are the ones who think they are the better Puerto Ricans. If you want Puerto Rico to become a state, there won't be anymore "I'm Puerto Rican" you'll just be an American living on the island state of Puerto Rico. Or we'll just be named "Native Puerto Ricans". Also funny how you write in only Spanish when this is an English channel and the dominant language of the union you want to join is English, you're playing into the joke of "How do you find a Puerto Rican thats Pro-statehood? They do not speak English."

I yelled at her Gringo Go Home. I have ridden my bike in that park for yrs for her to come & tell me what to do & how now. Also, all the tourists who are disrespectful get that message yelled at them. Some of the female tourists are disrespectful wearing very revealing clothing everywhere & dancing simulating sexual acts where there are little kids.

There's a fear of becoming like Hawaii which resonates deeply with us. I was there back in '05 for work early in my career. The tourist stuff got old quick so my buddies and I got to know the locals and started hanging out with them. We were there for 4 months and had a blast. People started thinking we were from the spot. In contrast, I went back last year for my wedding anniversary and found no Hawaiians. All the locals were replaced, nobody spoke pidgin, even the Hawaiian accent was gone. They were all displaced by people that "connected with the culture and the land". Keep in mind when we move to the US we "get with the system", learn English and essentially Americanize ourselves. If you come to PR learn Spanish and try to become Latino/ Rican. Two good examples are actually asian: La Señorita Yanyi & El Coreano Loco - although he's in the Canary islands he's embraced Puerto Rican culture through reggaeton.

I believe your explanation was on point. Gringo is a word even used by locals to reffer to their own that has been in usa for the longest time. Now, we have People that has lost their apartments, seen their neigborhood been genteified, suffer the local investor inflation in food and housing, cant find a place to live because of the high numbers of short term rentals an airbnb. Cant blame these People thst express their frustration. But overall, locals are very welcoming.

Completely agree! I live in the south of PR ( Ponce) and its been over a year my mom hasn't had any luck finding a long term rental. Every single home bought nowadays, its been converted into brnbs, leaving us with no homes because they only want to rent them short term (more money). Our homes have become a business and most of the people buying them, dont even live here... and we end up without a home to live in our own island.

Yea, I mostly agree with your take. Also, someone can be of puertorican decent and be called a gringo if they were raised in the states. And, I must add, that sometimes it can be used as an edearing term. Like for example, if Im with a friend that’s not from the Island that person might get the nickname “el gringo” as just a plain term, o an endearing term. I think most words in “puertorican spanish” can be used for endearment or insult depending on the circumstances. Lastly, now that you mention to read a book, I would certainly suggest “war against all Puerto Ricans”. It gives a huge perspective on our side of history. Keep up the vids, I enjoy your perspective of the islan, and really appreciate how respectuful you are to our culture. Hopefully you will continue to embrace us a culture, and we may embrace you so that you may be considered one of us. 💪

My entire lineage is from the island. Parents , grandparents, great grandparents. I was born in the Bronx but still call myself Puerto Rican. On the island a lot of them refer to me as gringo. Not on some disrespectful ish, just as a description. They can tell by the way I'm dressed that I'm not from there. I don't take it personal because most of the time it's not meant to be. "Gringo go home" is for those who would exploit the island and it's people. If they REALLY wanna disrespect us they'll say "tu no eres de aqui, to eres de alla fuera" meaning "You're not from here, your from out there" from the states. That I don't tolerate, because we're the ones in the states flying the PR flag in our cars, in our houses, on our clothes etc. Flying the PR flag was once illegal in PR and you could be sent to prison for up to 10 years.

When my family moved back to PR when my brothers and I were children the neighborhood children would refer to us as “los griguitos”. It wasn’t meant as an insult. At the time my brothers and I spoke English amongst ourselves, and our Spanish was a bit rusty. The word “Gringo” can be used as an insult depending on the context in which it’s used. The graffiti you showed is stating an angry request. But, because we have people of different ethnicities and races on the island it’s common to use those types of terms when speaking to them. Mostly between friends, and family. For instance someone with oriental roots can be called “Chino”, someone of Asian descent might be called “Indio”. You may be shocked but here it’s common for us to refer to each other as “Negro”, or “Negra”, and “Negrito”, or “Negrita” regardless of the color of a persons skin. Fair warning, this is mostly seen among families, and/or very close friends. Most of the time it’s not meant as an insult, but as a term of endearment. Trust that you’ll know when it’s said as an insult.

They are also causing a lot of environmental damage that is gonna leave us vulnerable ecologically for decades. Gringos are even killing our beloved Coquí because there are some that say they don't like the noise.... but he's endangered. He is to us what the bald eagle is to all of you. He's our baby. There is a popular story that gringo meaning came from the Mexican-American War during 1846 to 1848. The story goes that the U.S. military wore green coats when they were marching through Mexican territory. In response, the Mexicans would say, “Green go home!” These words meshed together and the word gringo was born. The extreme left in Rich Port adapted the term in a derogatory way to target people who came to vacation and dose who retired to live here.

You got it right man, when puerto ricans say "gringo go home" they don't mean americans like you that love and respect the island like we do. They mean the big corporations and investors that wreak havoc on our island's economy making it impossible for us to live here. Also a lil fun fact, the word "gringo" comes from white americans shouting at latinos with green cards "Green go home" so the latinos started calling them "gringos" cuz thats what they would hear when they saw americans.

Puerto Rican's vote overwhelmingly in support of statehood. I don't know who wrote that, but you shouldn't give it too much weight. Think of these slogans like those used by any other small activist groups in the states, like those against war, in support of humanitarian efforts, police reform, etc. Certainly BLM doesn't represent all of the United States. This too is an unpopular sentiment in a political conversation with contributions from many voices.
