Being Black in Almaty Kazakhstan. The Truth!
Francois Marc walks around Almaty, Kazakhstan and interviews people about how it is to be Black in Kazakhstan. Many Black or African Americans ask me if it is okay and safe for Black Americas to travel to Almaty Kazakhstan. As I speak to many Kazakh people about this topic, I hope this video can offer some details and insight for Black Americans looking for information about traveling to Almaty Kazakhstan.
If you are thinking of coming to Almaty Kazakhstan, then think no longer and come! There are amazing things to do in a country that is full of good food, friendly people, and amazing sites, even on the city streets of Almaty. You won't be disappointed if you come to Almaty, Kazakhstan!

I feel like the reason people are chill here regarding race is also because compared to East Asian countries, kazakhs don’t suffer much from colorism. There are light skin toned kazakhs and dark skin toned kazakhs and society accepts both as beautiful, you won’t find skin-bleaching creams like you would in South Korea, China, Thailand etc.

there is still some colorism in Kazakhstan but it doesn’t affect your life to the point of making it harder. Luckily it is dying out bcs colorism is mostly is uplifted by older people and younger ones doesn’t care about it

Hi, Mark! I’ve watched your dombra playing video. Well done! Be sure people here will be very glad to meet you. Especially if they’ll know that you play dombra. Almaty is a very musical city. Theatrical and musical seasons are opening in the September. But festivals happen any time of the year. If you’ll be on August 17 here - on the hippodrome will be Kinga farm derby. Usually it ends with the small ethnic rock music concert. Anyway, you and your wife are very welcome to Kazakhstan.

I would love to go to Kazakhstan after watching this video Francois. It really seems like a very hospitable and beautiful country like you said. From what I learned from my friend from Uzbekistan, he said Kazakhstan people are a very diverse group of people with many different ethnic groups with a variety of European and East Asian features. Even mixed with Mongol tribes, Uralic, and Iranian people. That is why many Kazakhs look "Asians" I guess!! Lastly, I am also from Atlanta Francois. I used to live close to Emory University in DeKalb County and often went to Buckhead Lenox Square Shopping Mall a lot. I am sure you have been there too. I miss Atlanta very much, especially the Southern hospitality and vibe. The autumn weather is so beautiful in Atlanta with leaves changing colors. Do you miss Atlanta too? That is also something I've noticed while living in Asia contrasted with living in the US and Europe: this western racism exists only in very small pockets out here. Of course, there will be some 'racists' in every country and land, but to the level that it exists in the US...nope. I'm happy you have had a wonderful 10 years in the US. The US in itself isn't bad, however, there are some people in the country that can make living there intolerable. I'm happy your experiences have been different!!:)

I only make this title because African Americans don't travel often, so I'm trying to get them to see other places:) My videos are for everyone:) Honestly, you need 2 weeks at the least to experience a small portion of the country. Almaty, Astana, places in the west I haven't traveled to...I'm actually going back after wrist surgery. The other countries you listed are also top-notch. See them all and stay longer than a week so you won't feel rushed.

@Jitterbug360 I am Kazakh and I think it all depends on what you wanna see and maybe contact local guides beforehand. I mean the south is very interesting too very different from Almaty. Way more family oriented and traditional. This is why they are even more hospitable. The newly rebuilt ancient city of Turkestan is worth a visit. It has a mausoleum of sufi Khoja Yassawi. Many Kazakh Khans are buried there. Shymkent, there is places around the region to visit like Aqmeshit. In Mangystay region there is white mountains and the sea. There is a mosque in a cave. There is a channel called Alkettik where the guy visits Kazakhstan's different regions. Not that he covers everything of course. You can inquire, search and investigate.

Great video man, in my experience traveling around Asia you’re seen as a human-being first and judged off of your character rather than skin tone alone. And if you try to speak the language as well that usually always gives you bonus points + Another thing I had to get used to is being known as the American as well 😂 I always think like “oh yeah I guess I am American” We’re so used to being called AFRICAN American and that distinction almost connotes a second class citizen type of feel

I can explain the race obsession within Americans. America was once a highly racialized society for much of its history. Up until the civil rights act, race determined who you could love, where you could live, where you could work, and pretty much every aspect of American society. My explanation is an oversimplification but basically race determined your life and experiences in America. Thankfully a lot has changed but bigotry still exists. Sorry Kazakhs and foreigners, racial tensions still persist in America to a lesser extent. Europeans colonized much of the known world and established racial hierarchies. So often when African Americans travel around the world, their experiences differ from Europeans do to historical realities and prejudices passed down generations. Thankfully from what I’m reading from the Kazakh people is that racism isn’t a prolific problem in your country. I just wanted to give context on why Americans and in particular African Americans are very concerned with race relations of various countries. Much love from America 🇺🇸 to the Kazakhstan 🇰🇿

Kazakh here. Can’t stress this enough; here in Kazakhstan, ain’t nobody will care if you’re black! If anything, I’d expect people to be very excited to get to know you, but would obviously, not bother you due to basic manners. Another thing is - conversation; some Kazakhs have not enough advanced English knowledge to break the ice, and some are too socially embarrassed to open up. There’s nothing about Kazakhs hating on beautiful black people. Lastly, I feel like Kazakhs and African-Americans could relate to each other in some way, since historically, we both went through disastrous hardships and had to fight for our freedom/independence in our own ways. I personally love the culture, and follow multiple black creators. Their energy is just fire 🔥

🇰🇿70% of the population of Kazakhstan are Kazakhs, but there are many other nationalities: Russians, Germans, Chechens, Uzbeks, Uighurs, Ukrainians, Tatars, Koreans and so on, many of their ancestors were forcibly sent to Kazakhstan during the Soviet Union, there were also those who were sent into exile in Kazakhstan. All nationalities get along in peace and harmony, are friends, celebrate holidays together. People in Kazakhstan are very kind, responsive, and peaceful. At the same time, Kazakhstan has a special spirit of nomads. The official language is Kazakh, Kazakh and Russian are mostly spoken, but also many of the citizens, mostly young people, know English at an intermediate or conversational level. Kazakhstan is a secular country, people of different religions live here. Kazakhs themselves mostly profess secular Islam, but do not accept radical Islam, but rather local Islam has the specifics of a nomadic people. Before Islam, Kazakhs were Tengrians, so this influenced the development of a specific local Islam in Kazakhstan. Kazakhs have been a people engaged in nomadic cattle breeding since ancient times, historically had a special strong spirit of nomads, since childhood they were trained to be warriors, so today Kazakhs are good at sports such as boxing and wrestling. Kazakhs love various celebrations and family holidays, lead a measured lifestyle. Kazakhstan is a country with a rich deep culture, family values, delicious national cuisine, beautiful national clothes and music, Kazakhstanis are hospitable and tolerant, appreciate when their culture and language are respected, they are also open to other cultures and appreciate the multinational nature in the country. Every nationality in Kazakhstan is of particular importance, everyone has the right to profess their culture and observe their customs and traditions, there is no infringement in this. Kazakhstan has a very huge history of being colonized and oppressed by the Russian government, most than a half of our population has died out of man made famine during those times, all the elite was sent to gulags and our land was used as polygons like Semey and etc. that’s why in that time Kazakhs were minorities on our own land. But we are getting it back, this year Kazakhs officially got more than 71% of the Kazakhstan population and now we are considered to be monoethnic country not multiethnic. Part of that history still shows why we are so against “only russian” menus and places in here

Kazakhs as an ethnicity have mixed blood. Central Asia at different times was home to different civilisations, and then new ethnicities came to the region, conquered it and all eventually mixed together. And then during the Soviet times, during WW2, Stalin sent entire ethnicities from all over Soviet Union to Kazakhstan bc he didn’t trust those ethnicities and wanted to move them away from the borders and front lines. It was a terrible thing, a true tragedy, similarly to what has been done to Japanese Americans in the US, but worse. But bc of that there are ethnic Germans, Koreans, Ukrainians, Chechens, Armenians, Georgians, Ingushes and many other ethnicities in Kazakhstan. Soviet government treated horribly those ethnicities, they weren’t given homes when they arrived in Kazakhstan, so local people helped them, gave them food the first winter, let them into their homes and help built homes for them. People were all in the same boat, struggling, so they were helping each other. And officially Soviet government actually had very strict position against racism. The official policy was that workers from all countries should unite against capitalism. And officially the Soviet government promoted the policy of friendship of ethnicities. Ofc there was hidden discrimination but generally the politics was better than in the US at the time. Racism and segregation were seen as faults of the West, and many soviets were raised to truly believe that ethnicity, skin colour doesn’t matter. In fact, a lot of Soviet children knew about Angela Davis, and they were in solidarity with civil rights movement. And Kazakhs themselves are a very welcoming and hospitable nation, it’s true. This land was historically a crossroad for different cultures, trade caravans passed through this land, so there was always some cultural exchange and a principle of religious tolerance.

I’m so glad that you liked our country :) For us, meeting foreigners is somehow very pleasant, Idk, even interesting. I dream of meeting foreigners. I want to interview them. I won’t be able to say this in words, but no matter what this person is, I am very interested in him/her and I will always be glad to see him. Welcome to Kazakhstano((*^▽^*))o

Kazakhstan is a hospitable country, but do not think that Kazakh women will immediately choose you and marry you. We honor our culture, traditions, and religions. Kazakh women are very educated, smart and beautiful. Purity of blood is important to us; they usually rarely marry foreigners. Since ancient times, Kazakh women have been warlike. We have a huge territory and our own traditions. Kazakh men do not simply give their daughters to other nationalities. We within our clan do not mix blood until the seventh generation. Don't mislead people. Don't think that Kazakh women are easily accessible.

Hello, and thanks for your comment. I am not misleading anyone. I did not state that Kazakh women would immediately choose and marry a foreigner. I think you brought your own biased thinking to the comment section. Also, you don't know all Kazakh women or families, do you? This comment is borderline ignorant and aggressive.

@@francoismarc3 I am Kazakh women and I am writing to you my opinion. You told everyone to come here and Kazakh women will not mind going marry. But this is not true. We do not choose everyone, especially other nationalities. We respect all people on the planet, regardless of race, skin color or nationality. But for marriage we choose our nation. This information is for those who misunderstood you.

@@ЭмиДоктор Thanks for the clarification, but I did not say Kazakh women will choose you if you come. I did state that you could find a woman to marry in Kazakstan, being that my friend did. Obviously, it is possible... I think you had some misunderstandings about the video. Thanks again for your comment.
