Thank you so much for your videos. I've only watched two, and managed to learn 90% more about the same camera I've used for 20 years. I've got the eye, and I've gotten away with a lot because of that - and randomly fiddling with settings has helped...but seriously, I have never taken the time to learn about the most important key components of any camera, really. I appreciate how you say - just play with the camera, take pictures without caring to experiment with the settings - and that is really helping me now. I've always used a digital Canon Powershot. I've had three different versions now over 20 years. I recently bought a newer version this last month - the Canon Powershot SX70 HS. The newer version is more advanced than what I care for or am used too, and it is not as easy to use as the older versions. It doesn't have the best focus and doesn't instantly take an amazingly clear photo like my older cameras did...so I'm not sure if it's just me or the camera. That's why I'm here. That's why I'm taking the time to learn it - because it was an expensive investment I made because I am trying to pursue some dreams here, and I usually love the Powershot, so I don't mind learning all these extra details about THIS camera. Not only details, but BASICS. I've never learned about aperture, or shutter speed or ISO because I had no interest, and I never particularly needed to mess with that stuff because the photos that I took with the older Powershots were phenomenal. (My old cameras burned in a California fire, so that's why I recently bought a new one - or I'd still be using the old ones!). Anyway, it feels like my newer camera doesn't calibrate as quickly as its' older versions - I can't just pick it up and shoot without fiddling around with settings. Unless I'm missing something...but it seems to have trouble with focus. I like super clean, detailed shots, landscape and macro - and I used to whip open the camera and take beautiful photography no problem. What am I doing wrong with this one? It is often blurry or soft or grainy. I am messing with everything I am learning about, and it is helping me learn such a great deal more than what I had originally been seeking. But my point really is that I'm learning so much more because it's not doing what I want immediately - and it is a blessing in disguise having to learn all of the most important tools of a camera. I've never been so interested in learning about my camera, and maybe was in weird denial or stubbornness to not learn it so in depth...but I can see how this is versatile knowledge I can hold on to for any camera I get in the future. Thank you for your videos.

I tried these techniques in clubs and bars. Oh my, brings sterile shots to life big time. Especially when there is a fog machine or smokiness in the atmosphere. Taken a bit too far and I see what Picasso saw. Before and after and in between the movements of people. Fabulous distortions. Next level in my experiments means a few seconds on smoke then quick pan to the people for around a second. Magical, surreal, amazing (to me).

I love using motion blur during events. It’s usually after the first hour when I’ve taken everything I’ve needed and need to have some fun for myself to see what I can create. While I’m doing it for my enjoyment, I’m always happy when my clients like those photos as well. They often say that they make the event feel a bit more alive.

Thank you for another great video, they are always great, it’s a wonderful gift you have to be able to start others to be creative, interested, wanting to develop their skills , not bothering with all the “rules” and see photography in new ways. Thanks again for your life affirming take on image making. You reminded me of when I had a tendency to keep my shutter speed at 1/15 or 1/30 second for nearly everything. I would incident meter the point where I wanted the exposure to register best for my subject and take available light images at those shutter speeds. I got quite used to holding the camera at those speeds and enjoyed the alchemy of depth of focus and the motion blur describing the action in the image. I feel self-conscious about working like that now. It feels as though the post digital photographers who influence style want oddly irrelevant technical features to be the mark of good work. The cameras we have will remove camera shake, focus critically and allow huge latitude and post-production corrections. The magic of what you are expressing here resonates strongly with me and I feel that I should use some of my older techniques to greater effect. I was influenced by reading photography books and looking at images and often the cameras and emulsion speeds precluded fast shutter speeds. The hyper-real digital image is no more real than the simpler ones from the pre digital era. Both exist as artificial proxies for reality and the 1/15 second shutter speed added a bit of surprise to each shot creating a reality that was satisfying.

I had fun with motion blur last night. I was completing an exercise for a street photography class - exercise was to get a night shot of motion blur. I chose an Asian Bistro as a background, had large windows and you could see the people inside and a huge red banner above the restaurant, I shot about 10 cars and then I got luck, a bright red Mustang drove by. Mustang was so much more dramatic than any of the other cars. Anyway motion blur is fun to do and as Alex says, makes more dynamic images.

Reference the lady in front of the carousel at about time mark 640-730 minutes. Yes you did mention throwing a flash on the photo to capture a clear shot of the lady but you didn't mention setting the flash on "2nd curtain". (I think for most Nikon cameras you have to set "2nd curtain" in the camera not the flash.)

I see far too many photos that are sharp from foreground to background and everything in them very still, no blur at all. Gets a bit samey after a while. I use a fullframe camera and 40mm lens. It’s not really possible to get total sharpness across the frame so I play with the depth of field and often stop the shutter down to keep the iso low and introduce some motion blur.

@ThePhotographicEye 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Bob, It would depend on so many factors and the situation itself that it's impossible to give you a definitive answer. There would be a certain amount of trial and error in seeing what effect you are after. As a rough guide obviously the lower the ISO you can use, the easier it would be to get a longer exposure. However to throw a spanner in the works, in my portrait long exposures, I needed higher ISO's to catch the ambient light. Hope this helps somewhat.

Enjoyed this video as I do your channel. I've been a long time subscriber. This is a complaint about the ridiculous amount of commercial interruptions, most of which were right wing political spots for an upcoming election in Atlanta. I think I counted eleven commercial interruptions placed about every two minutes or less plus another of the same political spot at the end. I'm not sure if I included the ad before your video starts. Each time I reached for my remote and skipped when the timer hit five seconds. This isn't just your channel. KZbin is destroying the user experience with so many ads of late that it will harm viewership and they are complaining. I was watching, as I often do via my Roku tv, and got fed up and turned your video off after the fourth interruption. To see if anything would change on another device I went to my KZbin app on my Xfinity cable box and continued watching with the clock timer on my iPhone. There was no difference. Eleven commercials in a video under eighteen minutes long and another after it ended. I have no problem with having a couple of commercials that the channels I subscribe to can have an income stream from. Maybe KZbin is trying to force users into yet another subscription fee to add to their bills. I don't feel like shelling out another $12 a month with the threat of my user experience being ruined if I don't. At this point I feel like telling KZbin to go f... well, you know. Keep up the good work. I hope to continue watching but my patience with KZbin is wearing thin right now.
