Sometimes I feel I am walking into a job that does not want me there to begin with. So why was I hired?

Mostly because no one before you wanted the job and hired you as a convenient. It happened to me. Still, I refuse to quit. They will have to fired me. It’s has been a month employed and is being micromanaged. Maybe because of me being obese she felt I couldn’t do the rounds until I proved otherwise. Let’s see how long I will last.

Another name for being "managed out" is being "Quiet fired". They make things so unbearable for the employee that they quit.

My old boss tried to manage me out. I decided to quit but I took him and the tech department down with me. When I walked out of the door a lot of people were in in trouble and I regret nothing. If I had joined a trade union they would have 'caught a case from me!' and I would have ensured I got a nice little settlement.

My current employer is managing me out... he has isolated me and he wants me to work on something that will take time to finish but I must work with another person in the company to get it done. I know for a fact that once this project is completed I will be shown the door. It's a clever way of getting me to transfer my knowledge and get the project done at the same time and while all this is happening I am isolated from other employees and I do not know what's happening in the company.

@@BillClinton228 I don't know where you are in the world in the UK speak to ACAS they will guide you. If you are a member of trade union speak to your rep ( I hired one recently) . There are independent HR rep's who will advocate for you as well for a fee. Plus there are free organisations throughout the world who give you advice - exercise them. Don't take this lying down.

This story rings true so much. Its hard when your family friends and partner etc dont understand this is happening to you. What are you meant to do when everyday your life is walking on a Tightrope trying to balance everything and having no solution. Do you just put up with it or walk? Its an endless field of excrement out there in terms of employment. Its even harder when your manager is nice to your face but cant tell you what the problem is.

Sometimes jobs skills can transfer and sometimes employers need to tell you exactly what they want you to do. They should respect the fact that someone else isn't there but you took the time and are available at that moment

Respectfully, it doesn't sound like you were managed out at all. You just weren't motivated by the job. You seem very sweet and genuine and you take full responsibility for your part in this, which is more than your boss's. I mean, you said you really needed the job but still chose not do a few hours of crash course Googling on beer and wine? Lol. You've admitted this, so I'm not judging - but I'd say it was a reasonable response from your manager given the job is at a place that specialises in drinks and food. If you were a star behind the bar and had rave customer reviews, then if your boss suddenly treated you passive aggressive poorly or held back shifts that would have been "managing out".

When companies state the following in a job posting or a manager says it find somewhere else. 1. "Must hit the ground running" translates to, "You will get little to no training at all and when you make a mistake it's your fault. 2. "We wear many hats here." Translates to, "We expect you to do multiple jobs but will only pay you for one." I.e. Hired as a waitress but also expected to do the bar staffs job and also expected to clean the kitchen. 3. "We treat everyone like family here." Translates to, "We will behave like a dysfunctional family and be abusive by exploiting you as much as we can get away with until you leave." 4. HR says, "We have an open door policy here. You can talk to us about anything in complete confidence." HR are NOT YOUR FRIENDS! They are there to protect the company finances and the company reputation. NOT YOU! 5. "We offer a competitive salary." translates to, "We will pay you less than elsewhere if we think we can get away with it. Some job postings won't state what the pay is because they know that they are offering way less than other companies. 6. "We have lots of opportunities for advancement" translates to, "If you are the right age, gender, colour, nationality." 7. "We are always hiring." translates to, "Our employees keep leaving." 8. "We are an equal opportunities employer." translates to, "Until your disability affects the work you do then we will do our best to get rid of you once we find someone to replace you." 9. "We offer an incentive rewards programme e.g employee of the month/year ect. Translates to, "If you kiss arse for long enough and the managers like you then you might get a gift voucher to spend on products or service within our company, a bottle of something/chocolates or something with our company logo on it as a thank you. 10. "There's always plenty of overtime available." translates to, "We have overtime but we either won't pay you for it or cut the overtime we think it's costing too much and eating into company profits." 11. "We offer flexible hours." translates to, "We mainly expect you to be flexible for us. It doesn't go both ways." I.e. "We expect you to be available 24 hours a day, 7 days per week and come in when it's your day off/holiday ect. When you have holidays booked we can cancel it whenever we want, especially during busy business periods and when we are short staffed. These things happen a lot in both hospitality and retail.

I have heard similar stories from other people. Why do you think they are not honest with thier employees? Would they have had to pay unemployment? Seems like a stupid game to play. Instead of telling you they don't think it's working out and explain the reasons why.

I remember my last job the disgraceful owner and GM were trying to get me to quit and it took them 8 months to let me go. I knew they wanted to let me go or me quit and make my life hard which I'm sure they thought I was ignorant to what they were doing to me but they did me a favor by letting me go. I only stuck around to prove a point and I was able to get under their skin without even trying. Worst job i ever had and the worst people I've ever worked with.

How can employees learn to push out their managers instead of their managers pushing them out? It makes me so mad seeing managers who make way more than lower level employees get to keep their jobs when they are terrible to work with. All they do is delegate and attend meetings where I work.

Hi Ryan, that's a complex question to answer as it involves the organisation's politics, the individuals involves, the company's position and a lot of other factors. The short answer is to decide if this is an organisation you want to stay in and that aligns with your values or not. If it is, then it's good to make yourself indispensable and build relationships with key stakeholders and decision-makers so that you're in a position of influence. From there, if the managers are under-performing, senior stakeholders may be more open to listening to your opinion on the matter.
