Welcome back, great photos as always. Crazy ruling about tripods, its not as though they cause significant harm to the historic fabric of the pier.

Great photos... how did you calcolate the right exposure time for your long exposures? thanks so much

I guess my exposures based on previous success and failures, just make sure you are over generous with the light hitting the emulsion!

Nice images. I recently got a 40mm f4 Distagon T* that I'm looking to put to use on the city streets of my hometown. The tripod thing is also an issue in the States depending on where you are. Some of the bigger parks don't want you to use them on some of the more popular trails and many buildings don't want you to use them inside. I've found that most places don't mind if you use a mono-pod.

Enjoy the 40 mm ! I'm done buying kit for a while unless it's cheap n nasty stuff

Maybe Gary reported you for the tripod because he was concerned his self-proclaimed fine art title was in jeopardy! Your work is amazing and beyond some of the so called fine art photographers who litter KZbin. Regarding the tripod issue, being from the Pacific Northwest in the US, I am always amazed at some of the “rules” or laws in Britain in general. That being said, you have some amazing locations in your hometown as well as Britain. Many buildings that are older than my country! Great to enjoy your new content today. Cheers!

Cheers I think the issue with the pier is copyright as they don't want professionals making money with images , ironically if I was a pro I could have used a modern stabilised lens anyway Yes this fine art tag does wind me up !

@@AustenGoldsmithPhotography Can I ask your evaluation of the Intrepid 4x5 camera? It seems quite flimsy, but I’m sure the lighter weight is great if one needs to pack it for any distance.

@@baggerrider8073 I think the intrepid is great for the price and light . I got mine at a great price and with an excellent lens , I soon sold the intrepid and replaced with a Chamonix which is similar but has lovely engineering . the latest generation of intrepid look good as the tilt has a zero wheat the older ones are less idiot proof . Also mine was bright red and I couldn't deal with that !

Deffinitely Fine Art Austen. americans love applying that name to themselves, but then they do take themselves a bit to seriously. Also if you started taking similar photos of a bridge like that in the states and the cops saw you, you would very quickly have your collar felt.

Couldn’t disagree more about your perspective on the states. I don’t know where exactly you got your example, but the US Supreme Court has stated that photography in public locations is not a crime. Basically anything in public a person can see with their eyes would be considered legal to photograph. Now if the pier was on private property that’s a different story. I have never been harassed by law enforcement for taking photos in public in the US and I’ve been doing it for 52 years. That being said, I love the image material in Britain and particularly in Austin’s patch. So many buildings older than my country!

Beautiful work Austen and great choice of music.. If i may ask you about the last image (6mn16) : 1 - Where did you point your meter at and what was your thinking process in determining your middle gray (Zone V)? 2 - F8 - 60 sec at 500 Iso sounds at least 4-5 stops over exposed for the situation, did you use ND's or am i missing something? Greetings from Paris my friend,
@AustenGoldsmithPhotography Жыл бұрын
When I use a spot meter I don't look for middle grey I read the meter which thinks everything is middle grey then I adjust the exposure to put raise or lower the zone to the correct place I don't meter at night I guess the exposures and bracket , I had other exposures at 30 sec and 90 sec . The 60 sec gave me the best negative
@AustenGoldsmithPhotography Жыл бұрын
Ah I realise you are talking about the shot where you see me metering , that is on delta 100 not hp800 , I used delta at sunset and hp at night

@@AustenGoldsmithPhotography Thank you very much for your answers, actually, i'm talking about the last image at 6mn16 (night shot), shot on HP800.. The video in this same spot right before (from 6mn to 6mn10) was probably around f2.8 - 1/48s - Iso800 (i'm a filmmaker) and the exposure looks around the same as your finale image on film ( F8 - 60sec - HP800), but there are about 8 stops difference between those two, thus my confusion..

@@N.Mendes the final shot under the bridge was a guess at 10 mins . I also did one at 20 but the 10 min was best

To speak frankly, your works are really good but quite different from Michael Kenna's pic. MK's subjects looked like frozen time to me: the moving objects got frozen in long exposure, and the time around the main subject seemed stopped. In my opionion, for the pic of the bridge, you should have lower the angle of view to get more room for the water with some sand and stones stood inside .
