Every religion has two aspects-one is its cultural setting, its traditions, customs, rituals and practices. These are all religious aspect. Other is its very life, which is love for God, purification of the mind, cultivation and application of ethical values. These are its spiritual aspect.
Watch Swami Mukundananda, an IIT and IIM alumnus, discuss the difference between religion and spirituality. While answering Parth Mehta a Software Developer question "What is the difference between being religious and spiritual? " Swamiji gives various examples and quotes various prophets and saints from Jesus Christ to Prophet Mohammad; from Guru Nanak to Saint Kabir. He also quotes Shrimad Bhagavat Mahapuran and Ved Vyas and says, "You may follow externally form perfectly, but if it does not result in developing attachment to the lotus feet of Lord Krishna, that is a mere waste of time."
"To recite prayers in temple is being religious while to develop a prayerful heart is being spiritual," says Swami Mukundananda. To wear kanthi mala is being religious while to adorn your mind with love for God is being spiritual. Religiosity will please your grandmother or your society. Spirituality will please God. However, Swamiji also says that this is simply a matter of semantics because different words mean different things to different people.
At the end Swamiji reconciles both the aspect and says that the religious practices also have a great importance in society. "They keep the religious tradition alive generations after generations," Says Swami Mukundananda in this video.

Spirituality is about seeking. When you realize that you *do not know* your existence and this life that’s when you become spiritual. *Spirituality equals truth as authority. Religion equals authority as truth.*

Very well explained the difference between being religious and being spiritual. Both have their own importance in life. But spirituality is an elevated state. Swamiji is great. I am fan of him..in today's age he is the best... Apart from that...Sri Aurobindo was also highly successful in career. Studied in London for 14 years, graduated from Cambridge. Obtained all time record marks for Greek and Latin in Cambridge, Had mastered 10 languages, 5 indian, 5 western, had a 700 rs monthly job 120 years ago (that would be crores now!), was the most popular political leader for 5 years , still he left all and lived like a pauper whole life dedicated to spirituality.

I always hear these two words religious and spiritual but never knew what is the different between this two. So many examples that Swamiji provides to distinguish between spirituality and religiosity are beautifully explained as actions necessary to purify the heart and soul (internal) versus those that are done as part of karma-kand (external). In other words, it is the difference between experiencing sentiments of love toward God versus mechanistically practicing without the sentiments of love.
