I'm 5'3". I think I would fit in just fine. Here in the Netherlands, I'm buried in a crowd of insanely tall people.
@NormanZavlandid106610 жыл бұрын
What height do you consider to be insanely tall? I'm English and have visited the Netherlands 5 times. I'm 6'6" and rarely meet anyone taller than me in England although there are plenty of people around who are about 6'3" to 6'4". 4 of my 5 visits were to The Hague, Rotterdam and twice to Amsterdam. I only remember seeing a few people taller than me. My other visit was for the Texel catamaran race and I stayed the night in Den Helder. Whilst in a pub there, I saw at least 10 guys who were between 6'6" & 7'0". Is Den Helder notorious for tall people or did I just happen to walk into a pub during a tall man's convention?
@MsWannabeGamer10 жыл бұрын
NormanZavlandid1066 For me, anyone over 6 feet is insanely tall. Since I'm just 5'3". But most people I know are about 6'5" or taller. Because you're very tall yourself, they don't seem as tall to you.
@poppyorangeflower10 жыл бұрын
Yeah. If you're a below-average height dude, you do not want to find yourself in Scandinavian countries and the Netherlands. But most girls get a free pass because they're... well... girls.
@UittoniiSuni10 жыл бұрын
NormanZavlandid1066 The main reason (I believe) "short" people and "tall" people have various ideas about what is tall is because of how the neck is positioned when looking at something. For shorter people they have to look up constantly to meet a tall persons eyes whereas a tall person does the opposite. Unless the height difference is small the angle in which you are looking at a person can emphasize a person's height. Especially to your own. A good example of this is when you want to take a picture of a tall building but can get far enough away without obstructing the view. You go down to the ground and tilt the camera up to get the entire building but in doing this you also make the building look much taller than if you were looking at it straight on.
@NormanZavlandid106610 жыл бұрын
UittoniiSuni Yes, and a shorter person always has an exaggerated perception of a taller person’s height because of the position of the eyes. My partner is 5’4” and I’m 6’6”. Her eyes are at about 4’11” and mine are at 6’1”. When we stand right next to each other, she looks at me and there’s a 19” difference between her eyes and the top of my head. I look at her and there’s only a 9” difference between my eyes and the top of her head.

I watched this anime called Lovely Complex which is a comedy about a tall girl and a short boy. The anime said that she was 171 centimeters and considered a giant... So as a girl of average height in scandinavia which is 172, I became curious about wtf was up with height in asian countries. And now I'm really scared that people will look at me weirdly for apparently being incredibly tall for a girl XI I mean, I heard that height is a really big deal in Japan and Korea. Like; a guy wants a girl who's at least 5 cm shorter, a girl could never date someone shorter and if you're taller/shorter than normal you're a freak. Makes me kinda anxious.
@Idkidkidkidk9548 жыл бұрын
The average height for women in Scandinavia is all around 167 cm.

+Cornelia T Karlsson well average height is +/- 4cm. But most of the girls I know are about my height. Anyway my point is that it's not a big deal here 😝
@Dynera8 жыл бұрын
+Emilie F I wondered the same thing before I went to Korea, because I'm 171cm and quite average in my home country (Finland), so I wondered whether I would get some long looks. Turns out it wasn't really that bad, I think it was more my dark red hair that drew attention to me. Wonder what would happen if I went back to my natural blonde and wore heels! :D But sometimes you do have to be careful, for example the handles in subway cars hang rather low for a person of my height, so I kept bumping my head against them.
@MilieNopeNotHere8 жыл бұрын
+Dynera it's odd to think about though. I've never thought of myself as tall. I'm 172 but there are many who are taller than me (although there are more who are shorter.) guess I just haven't given that much thought to height so to think that people in Japan made an anime about a girl my height who's considered a giant is just so weird 😝 but I'm glad handles is all you'll have to really worry about 😜

Was that Scandinavia on average? Because I read on a list that sweden had 172 cm as average for womens height. I´m Swedish too btw, but I am a short Swede (165). All of my female friends are around 170, even up to 185 cm... So I feel like a midget...

I was worrying about that before I went to Korea, because even though I'm about average where I live (176 cm) I'm a bit taller than many koreans. Luckily H&M has pretty much the same sizes they do in Germany though, so that wasn't a problem^^

I can always easily spot my father and my brothers in a crowd because they're taller.
@AlyssaTaylor910 жыл бұрын
I can relate to the snowplow thing. I'm all of 5'1 and it can be very difficult to move large crowds if everybody else in said crowd is moving. I get bumped around and forced back a lot. To combat this, if I'm with a large person I hold their arm or hand and let them guide me along, but if I'm not with anybody in particular I just attach myself to a large person who happens to be moving the same direction, most of the time they don't notice.

I'm a 182cm (6 foot) female from Australia. The average female height in Australia is 168cm so for me it's really hard to find dresses and shorts that are long enough. Even harder than that is shoes. I'm a size 10 - 12 (depending on the make of shoe) with wide feet and one foot a whole size longer than the other. In most stores shoes are only made up to a size 10 and are never wide enough. Sometimes there are size 11 shoes but there'll be less of a variety to choose from and usually when there are size 11 and 12 it is all shoes that old people would wear which really isn't good for me since I'm 17 years old. I've been this tall since the age of 14.

I'm a girl, I'm 5'10 and have size 11/12 feet and it's hard for me to find clothes, especially shoes, and that's here in the states! I live in Texas and people here are usually a bit taller and bigger and I STILL have trouble with clothes! I think you saying that you tower over everybody is highly exaggerated. The average male height in Korea is 174cm and in the US the average white male has a height of 177cm (and it's the same in the UK). A difference of 3cm isn't that great, since the standard deviation for male heights is 7cm. So 3/7 of a standard deviation isn't that much though nontrivial
@g.eexhu544810 жыл бұрын
Also, you're not quite big, though you are tall. Your shoulders are slightly more narrow than average, I would say. Sorry I'm not trying to put you down or anything like that, just stating it like I see it.
@jongseonglee473610 жыл бұрын
I'm assuming you've lived in the USA which is why I find it a little weird on why you think its exaggerated. I think the average US male height doesn't account for how many extremes there are. Living in the states, it's not uncommon to find a lot of people who are 185-195. Bring me 5 random males and I'm sure one is going to fall under that range. But then again, I also see a lot of short males that are in the 160-170 range. I think Korea is a lot more normalized and has a narrower bell curve in terms of height. I see about 1 in 10 people who are in the 185-195 range currently in Korea (i'm visiting family), and I think its because Korean height is much more normalized to a bell curve compared to US male height. Considering how it feels to stand next to a person who is 5 inches taller than you, I think 3 standard deviations above the average height is pretty "towering." I mean, that's like the length of a head.
@g.eexhu544810 жыл бұрын
A displacement of three sevenths of a standard deviation is actually sufficient to account for the rough 1-in-10 versus 1-in-5 difference that you've observed due to the fact that the bell curve diminishes more and more rapidly as it descends toward its tails. Remember that it's not linear. I've looked into studies of this trait (height) and other traits in the past and it's not convincing that the standard deviation varies across different populations that share similar socioeconomic states; the population distribution usually falls within a bell curve-like histogram with very few exceptions, when a sufficiently large sample is taken. In fact, if anything in more developed countries with similar socioeconomic statuses the standard deviation is smaller due to the relative elimination of malnutrition and other factors which would stretch out outliers on the tails of the curve; there is more of a "normalized" nutritional/environmental standard for the population. I find it a little strange that you think studies on average height in the US would somehow leave out outliers in their data collections; this is almost certainly a false statement. However I understand what you are trying to say: the US indeed has a less homogeneous population due to relatively greater genetic diversity. Due to relative inhomogeneity in the US-as opposed to Korea-different sub-populations will have different height distributions and that's probably where the observation comes from.

G. EEXHU54 I agree with you overall but the main reason (I believe) "short" people and "tall" people have various ideas about what is tall is because of how the neck is positioned when looking at something. For shorter people they have to look up constantly to meet a tall persons eyes whereas a tall person does the opposite. Unless the height difference is small the angle in which you are looking at a person can emphasize a person's height. Especially to your own. A good example of this is when you want to take a picture of a tall building but can't get far enough away without obstructing the view. You go down to the ground and tilt the camera up to get the entire building but in doing this you also make the building look much taller than if you were looking at it straight on. Though I agree that homogeneity and inhomogeneity both play a role I can safely say that even a little bit of height difference does indeed make a difference. I live in Taiwan right now and the avg. height for a male is 171.45 cm (5' 7.5") and the avg. height for a woman is 159.68 cm (5' 2.75") and just this past month I went to Hong Kong for a week and the avg. height for a man is 171.7 cm (5 ft 7 1⁄2 in) and for women is 158.7 cm (5 ft 2 1⁄2 in). While I was only there for a week and Hong Kongers (sp?) are on avg. about .35 cm (1/2") taller than the avg. Taiwanese I could still tell that they were taller and I felt much smaller even though I had not known the statistic at the time (I looked it up later because I couldn't understand why I felt they were taller when I was there. Thought it might have been because I was in a new country and had never been there before. XP). Hope this makes sense and that my spelling was OK. >
@g.eexhu544810 жыл бұрын
Yes, I agree that at smaller distances between individuals, height differences are most apparent to each observer. Those statistics may be outdated. Also, they may have differing methodologies and sample sizes. But aside from those points, I don't think that these samples should be treated so seriously up to the hundredths digit, so to speak: depending on the sample, it could have well been the case that the average male height in HK was smaller than the average male height in Taiwan by 0.25cm. For instance if you look up different studies of Taiwan male height (and HK too) you'll probably figures that are certainly different up to the hundredths digits. I think that saying the average male height in both HK and Taiwan surpasses 171cm is a pretty safe statement; however after the units digit, things may not be as reliable. Based on (somewhat old) statistics, average male height in Taiwan and HK is probably about the same. (Makes sense as the vast majority of Taiwanese are from Fujian, which is quite "genetically homogeneous" to Guangdong and hence HK.) Regarding your observations, you *might* also have seen an uncharacteristically taller set of people in HK and / or an uncharacteristically short set of people in Taiwan. (Though I'd rule the latter out given that you live in Taiwan, so it's probably merely the former, which is quite possible due to the fact that your duration of stay was a week.) Of course it's also perfectly possible that people from HK truly are taller than people from Taiwan. But to address your intended point: Hmm, I don't really think 0.25cm would be sufficient to account for such a large perceived height difference. It's too small. So it's one of two things: either you observed an uncharacteristically tall set people in HK and/or HK people are taller by more than 0.25cm. Sorry for the long write-up. If you ever go to northern China you might be even more taken aback. Northern Chinese males are the tallest in China (and Asia), at 175+ cm. :-)

I'm not the tallest if I think about the group of friends that I hang out with, I'm 170.8cm (lol yeap the exact height) sooo it would be 5'7 and a quarter...I was totally happy with my height UNTIL I came across with kpop. Well actually it took me years to realize that my favorite stars are actually shorter than me...whyyyy :((( My number one bias is baekhyun from exo-k and recently they had a photo shoot for a magazine and it said that he is "about 5'7"...that would be about 170.2 cm......So yeah..and I believe that even that height is exaggerated..again whyyyy?! It has been my mission to figure out his real height so that I can compare him to others and expose their real heights too :D Orange caramel's Nana is really about 171cm because baekhyun is a bit shorter than her...and kwanghee from zea is claimed to be 173cm and he truly seems to be taller than baekhyun. When you guys did the interview/appeared on the show with suju and fx Martina looked a lot taller than any of them, but still their profiles state that they should be relatively tall...maybe it was just the shooting angle or something...I clearly have too much free time on my hands (not really though, gotta read) but yeah.

My son is also 6' 4" tall and due to his taller than average height have had many comical experiences of his own the last time we were in Korea. Anyway, for a boy who grew up in the house with a 10 foot ceiling it was quite a challenge having to adjust to ceilings barely tall enough clear the top of his head. Especially whenever he was going in and out of the rooms and kept forgetting to duck his head in time. As a result resounding smacking forehead right into door lintel noise was what how we could guess whether the boy was in the vicinity or not. Same thing on the buses until a mere reminder of"duck!" itself was enough to get him so irritated. Oh well, you know about having to folding and squeezing long limbs to fit little space between seats all too well so I won't even bother to mention. However, it still was overall wonderful experience that my son can't wait to go back. How about that...!

so what I am learning from what I just heard and watched from this video is that at 6'6" and 245 lbs, Korea and probably Japan are not the places for me to go on a trip. Cause, I have always wanted to go to both and am a "huge" have of K-Pop on the korean side and "huge" fan of J-Pop/J-Rock on the Japanese side, and if it makes anyone feel better or worse, I am the 3rd shortest in my family. I love the video btw, was somewhat informative on what a tall person goes through in Korea, I'm still weighing my options but even with my size I might go anyways.
