Beirut explosion: Diver captures moment of blast as seen from the water

A diver in the port of Beirut captured the massive August 4 explosion from the vantage point of the water.
Alaa Saad told Storyful he was sitting on a boat with his friends after diving when they noticed smoke rising from the port. It was minutes before the massive explosion hit the capital, killing at least 220 people and injuring more than 6,000.
“As soon as I saw the explosion, I never thought it would be one that’d destroy Beirut. I thought it was a show or a festival because I had never imagined that this kind of explosion would occur in my city,” Saad said.
Lebanon’s prime minister stepped down from his job Monday in the wake of the catastrophic explosion in Beirut that has triggered public outrage, saying he has come to the conclusion that corruption in the country is “bigger than the state.”
The move risks opening the way to dragged-out negotiations over a new Cabinet amid urgent calls for reform. It follows a weekend of anti-government protests after the explosion in Beirut’s port.

Remember that the sound always comes after the blast. In fact the people only felt first the terrible shock wave then the sound. I don't know the speed of shock wave and the sound of the blast but being relatively near the harbour there was not much difference...
@paoloviti6156

For your info the speed of sound at 20 °C in air is about 343 metres per second or 1,235 km/h and a kilometre will take 2.9 seconds to travel. It depends strongly on temperature as well as the medium through which a sound wave is propagating...

@@PuffinDragun69 yes when there is there is that much energy involve the normal speed of sound goes out the window. Though i will say this, cause I've seen this in other comment threads, not this one. But I've seen people mistakenly talk like the sound of the explosion and the shockwave of the explosion as two seperate things that can hit you at seperate times. They're not the sound of the explosion is the shockwave and they can't hit you seperately. Some one said the said you would get hit by the shockwave before you heard the sound of the explosion, which is physically impossible. The shockwave is the sound of the explosion.

On 12/17/76 I was in a metal shop building about 9 miles from where the oil tanker SS Sansinena exploded in San Pedro, Ca. The noise I heard was exactly like the noise on this video. It was extremely loud, hit instantly, shook the building and rumbled away. Never heard anything like it until now. Terrifying.

Seeing so many different angles of the explosion reminds me of what it was like in the month following 9/11, with people sharing videos with news organizations of their own home footage. A couple of years later and KZbin's creation allowed for those videos to be uploaded viewed, much like if you were to look at videos of the Halifax explosion. It feels like a second-hand witness to the events, truly a catastrophe and I feel for all the people caught up in the post-explosion world that is their new reality.

@Tamara Fletcher There's that "footage" word again. 99.9999% of videos don't use reels of movie film. Instead, videos are recorded digitally and linear units of measurement are anachronistic when pertaining to digital recordings. Of course there are satellite videos, but the military would not release them and reveal what locations on Earth they were or were not monitoring.
